House Bill 89 by Representative Neil Combee and Senator Greg Evers is on its way to the Governor.

On Apr. 3, 2014, HB-89 passed the Florida Senate by a vote of 32-7. In the Senate, 6 Democrats and 1 Republican voted against the bill. Republicans voting against the bill were: John Legg (R-Lutz). Democrats voting against the bill were: Oscar Braynon (D-Miami Gardens), Dwight Bullard (D-Cutler Bay), Arthenia Joyner (D)-Tampa), Gwen Margolis (D_Miami), Jeremy Ring (D-Margate), Chris Smith (D-Ft. Lauderdale)

Having previously passed the Florida House by a vote of 93-24, the bill is now making its way to the Governor’s desk.

HB-89 is a bill to stop abusive prosecutors from using 10-20-LIFE to prosecute people who, in self-defense, threaten to use deadly force against an attacker as a means to stop an attack.

Some anti-gun, anti-self-defense prosecutors have been abusing the 10-20-LIFE law to prosecute average citizens who displayed a weapon or gun in self-defense to make an attacker back off.

Average citizens who never would have been in the system if they had not been attacked and in fear for their own safety, are being persecuted and prosecuted for defending themselves.

Because citizens took responsibility for their own safety, some prosecutors treat them like criminals and

make them victims of a judicial system.

10-20-Life was passed to stop prosecutors and judges from slapping gun-wielding criminals on the wrist so they could quickly clear cases.

The 10-20-Life law was never intended to be used against citizens who, in an act of self-defense, threatened the use of force to stop an attacker, including the unwise use of a warning shot. Yet, that’s what some prosecutors are doing. They are willfully and knowingly violating the intent of the law.

It’s Not About Warning Shots -- The 10-20-Life law is being misused.

Benelli’s M2 has passed the tests of time, establishing a stellar reputation as the shotgun of choice for serious 3-gun competitors. Now, Benelli takes the M2 to the next level with the issue of the Performance Shop M2 3-Gun Edition, the ultimate tactical competition gun that’s simply perfect.

Like all Benellis the heart of the M2 3-Gun Edition is its ultra-reliable Inertia Driven operating system. This fine-tuned tactical gun incorporates custom parts from Nordic Components that promote efficient handling and enhanced performance. It begins with the fitting of a larger bolt release, called a Speed Button, designed to eliminate any fumbling during quick reloads. An extended tactical-style bolt-cocking handle integrates a unique swirled design that provides a quick and sure grip, and which, aids the effort of loading and unloading.

The M2 3-Gun Edition’s loading port has been widened, edges beveled and the carrier modified to assist with the speed and ease of loading the magazine. Completing the magazine customization, a heavy-duty Teflon-coated follower has been fitted to ensure the lowest drag possible and to eliminate unnecessary friction within the magazine. These enhanced followers are also designed to prevent over compressing the magazine spring, which can result in premature spring failure.

Weatherby’s new PA-459 TR 8-Shot pump shotgun features a magazine capacity of seven 2 ¾-inch shells (plus one in chamber), providing an extra measure of assurance for personal/home defense situations as well as more firepower for three-gun and other competitive shooting events.

“Our PA-459 TR pump shotguns are designed for threat response and with the larger magazine capacity, they become an even better option for three-gun competitors,” said Mike Schwiebert, vice president, marketing for Weatherby, Inc. “The short length of pull provides for quick, snag-free target acquisition, and is ideal for use in close quarters. Because dependability is so important for these shotguns, all PA-459 TR models are endurance tested and field proven in accordance with our rigorous standards.”

Available in 12 gauge, the PA-459 TR 8-Shot has an ergonomic pistol grip-style buttstock and short 13 1/2-inch length of pull. Other key features include a black lightweight injection-molded stock, and a matte black finish on all metalwork to reduce glare. The rubber-textured grip area and a low-density recoil pad help minimize felt recoil. Picatinny rails on the bottom of the forearm and on top of the receiver allow mounting of optics, sights or lights.

The shotgun’s 18 1/2-inch barrel is chrome lined to withstand years of high-volume shooting. It has a screw-in cylinder bore choke. The barrel has a winged fiber optic front sight for quick target acquisition. A rear LPA-style ghost ring sight is adjustable for windage and elevation.

Located ahead of the trigger guard, an extended and enlarged slide release allows quick and dependable function of the action. The oversized release makes it easy to find by feel, even in the dark.

3-Gun competition has quickly become one of the most exciting and rapidly growing fields of shooting sports. With a dual emphasis on shooting speed and accuracy, Winchester recognized the need to create their own custom loads in order meet the demands of the sport. For 2014, Winchester Ammunition has created the allnew Win3Gun™ line to provide competition-grade ammunition that comes ready for action.

All pistol cartridges (9mm, 40 S&W and 45 ACP) in the Win3Gun line use lead-free primers and heel-encapsulated bullets. This makes the pistol offerings incredibly clean firing, which in turn keeps the compensator ports of popular competition pistols clean

and free of vaporized lead.

The Win3Gun line also includes a centerfire rifle round in 5.56mm with a 55-grain bullet and two 12-gauge shotgun loads with 7 ½

shot and 00 buckshot. All offerings are ideal for 3-Gun competition.

“3-Gun competition presents a very unique set of challenges and our engineers have stepped up to give

competitors a new brand of Winchester ammunition on which they can stake their reputations,” said Brett Flaugher, vice president of sales, marketing and strategy for Winchester Ammunition. “Win3Gun meets the power factor requirements of most competitive shooting leagues and is designed for great functionality, speed, cleanliness and winning.”

With 3-Gun and multi-gun competitions being the fastest growing and most active discipline of the shooting sports currently, Stag Arms realized a need for an out of the box competition rifle for these sports. The new Model 3G provides the shooter with a rifle that is ready to just install their optic of choice and start competing. Working with our newly formed 3-Gun shooting team, Team Stag Arms, we have determined the features and configuration that will have the broadest appeal and use in competition. With this rifle, competitors are able to produce fast and accurate shots from close to long range as is needed in 3-Gun competitions.

Boasting an 18” stainless steel fluted heavy barrel with a rifle length gas system and the new Stag Arms Super 3Gun compensator; recoil impulse is greatly reduced allowing for fast follow up shots. Aiding in accuracy is the Samson Evolution handguard, which is free floating and modular, allowing the attachment of rail sections or sling mounts along the handguard. This also grants the shooter the ability to mount accessories as needed but not be burdened with a full quad rail. The trigger is a Geissele Super 3-Gun trigger, which was specifically developed for 3-Gun competitions, as the name implies. It possesses a great reputation for durability and has what Geissele calls a hybrid pull. This hybrid pull is a unique combination of a single and two-stage that allows for both quick close range shots and more deliberate

long range shots. The buttstock and pistol grip are from Magpul featuring their collapsible ACS buttstock that provides a comfortable cheek weld along with storage and their MOE pistol grip that provide solid and secure grip. The rifle also is available with optional Dueck Defense Rapid Transition Sights (RTS) which are offset iron sights that are used for close in shots.

With all these features, the Stag Arms Model 3G provides the shooter an excellent rifle to excel at 3-Gun competing. The appeal of the rifle, while aimed at 3-Gun competitors is not limited to them. The rifle can and will appeal to anyone looking for an accurate, reliable, and modular AR-15 rifle.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation alerts potential sponsors, partners and participants that it has assumed administration of the Rimfire Challenge program—a national family-friendly, target shooting competition previously known as the Ruger Rimfire Challenge.

Now called the NSSF Rimfire Challenge, the program will continue using the format that has made it so popular: Providing new and novice shooters with a first taste of competition, with emphasis on fun, safety and mentoring by experienced shooters. In Rimfire Challenge matches, all levels of target shooters enjoy firing at steel targets in timed stages.

The use of .22 caliber pistols, revolvers and rifles means the Rimfire Challenge falls into the comfort zone of practically everyone’s budget. “The affordability of this program is something that participants really like and keeps them coming back,” said Zach Snow, NSSF’s Manager of

Shooting Promotions. “Event fees are affordable as well. Altogether, the NSSF Rimfire Challenge is a winning program for participants, ranges, sponsors and partners.”

NSSF Rimfire Challenge is attractive to both sponsors and partners because of the existing popularity of the program and NSSF’s plans for adding many more matches across the country. Sponsors provide overall support to NSSF Rimfire Challenge, and partners support registered matches with donations of products. Sponsorships and partnerships provide many benefits to companies, including increased visibility of products to potential lifelong customers, enhanced brand loyalty and knowing that your company is supporting a program dedicated to building a positive future for the shooting sports.

Interested sponsors can learn more about levels of support for NSSF Rimfire Challenge by contacting Chris Tatulli at 203-426-1320 ext. 214, email: ctatulli@nssf.

org. Interested partners can use the online form to sign up or contact Zach Snow at [email protected] or Tim Norris at [email protected] or call 661-510-9379.

For participants, NSSF Rimfire Challenge offers categories for everyone: Open and Limited Divisions, plus Special Recognition competitions. When approaching sponsors for a match, knowing how much to ask for can be tricky.

A couple recent conversations have put into perspective how important the ask is, especially when it comes to estimating the value of your match. Asking too little means you’re leaving money on the table and probably underfunding your match.

Ask for too much, and you run the risk of being unceremoniously laughed out of the meeting.

The right amount to ask for depends on a variety of factors but mostly if comes down to what is the value you are delivering to your sponsor.

Of course, we all oversell what we’re delivering. We naturally place a higher value on it than those we’re selling to. And that’s understood, to a large degree, by those sponsoring.

But, if the estimated value of your match has no place in reality, then you end up in trouble, because you signal to your potential sponsor a general lack of understanding about your match and their business.

I like to consider myself pretty good at understanding and articulating the value of a match, and, for the most part, can sit across the table from a company exec and make a very solid case for support.

However, the truth is that there is a point at which even I would run out

of plank to walk out on. It’s at that point that you hope the exec sitting across from you is willing to meet you halfway.

The truth is that few competitive shooting matches meet a reasonable ROI that a company exec can point to in order to justify the expense of the major sponsorship. This is more of an issue when it comes to hard dollars versus product donations.

Fortunately for match organizers, sponsors understand this and give greater weight to what it is you do deliver through your match. Most of the companies you approach realize the value in competitive shooting events, which is why they are on your list of potential sponsors to begin with.

So what is the correct amount to ask for from a sponsor?

There isn’t a set figure or a magic formula that will help you with your match plan. What you need to come up with is a narrative about your match. A story to tell sponsors.

Try this...1) The Numbers: Know all the

numbers surrounding your match. The number of competitors. Years you’ve held the match. Participation growth over the years. Facts like that.

2) The Global Stats: If you are building a case for supporting the shooting sports then incorporate some of the big picture numbers. NSSF’s new report on the economic

impact of recreational shooters is your starting point. Their numbers on recent firearms ownership trends are also key stats to incorporate into a match narrative.

3) The News Value: This goes back to the public relations work previously discussed in this column. If you are getting in the local news with your match, in industry publications, like The Shooting Wire, or on television, then weave that into the narrative.

4) The Past Benefits: Somehow your match benefitted from a company’s sponsorship in the previous year. Articulate how, because of their donation, you were able to raise more money for charity, provide free match slots for women and juniors, or improve the quality of the match in some particular way. Companies like to know that their support matters and what it accomplished beyond some shooter getting a free product as a prize.

There is more to telling the story of your match than just this, but what that is depends on what facts you have access to. To build your match narrative - your sponsorship pitch - gather all the facts you can and put them into a story. Then, tell your story to somebody who isn’t afraid to call ‘BS’ on you and will give you honest feedback.

If you pass the reality check, you’re ready to talk to sponsors.

Diamondback Firearms, a Florida-based firearms manufacturer of pistols and rifles, introduces their new full-size, polymer DB FS Nine handgun.

This new 9mm pistol is a double-action, striker-fire designed platform that incorporates an ergonomically driven polymer double stack frame with a stainless steel slide. With extensive research on the form and function of the tactile-enhanced grip, the operator will find the design enhances control, while providing consistent hand placement. The flared magwell aids in fast and reliable reloads while the extended magazine base pad provides a secure grip during loading, handling and shooting the DB FS Nine.

Diamondback has incorporated a trigger safety and firing pin block safety with a short, positive reset, minimizing trigger travel for faster cycle times. A cocking indicator is located at the rear of the slide,

providing visual and tactical recognition. For quick target acquisition, fixed, three-dot sights are mounted onto the stainless slide. Both front and rear tactical serrations provide firm engagement between the user’s hand and the DB FS Nine’s slide, allowing for a better grip during manipulation.

The dust cover has an integrated MIL-STD1913 Picatinny rail for tactical lights, lasers and other accessories, extending its versatility for everyday carry,

home defense, training or use on the range. The 4.75” Chromemoly barrel on the DB FS Nine provides a long, 6.25” sight radius, aiding the overall accuracy of the pistol during practice and competition.

The DB FS Nine weighs (unloaded): 21.5 oz and magazine capacity is 15 rounds.
