EXPAND*YOUR*PROFESSIONAL*NETWORK**Goal:*Add*8*People*to*your*professional*network*in*1*month.**

The*Rules*•  The people must be people you don’t know. So your real estate investor uncle that you

have known your whole doesn’t count.

•  They can be friends of people you already know. So the banker friend of your uncle counts.

•  The people must be in the field(s) you are interested in. So if you want to be in sales, a sales manager counts. The recruiter for Merrily Lynch doesn’t count. Not saying that knowing these people is a bad thing (if you meet these people still keep their contact info, they may be a resource later), but for the sake of this experiment we are only counting people the related field.

•  Hold a conversation with the person. In person, over email, on the phone.

•  Document how and when you met the person. Was it through someone? Did you go to a bar and spark a random convo with someone?

•  What did you gain from the discussion with that person?

The*Rules*•  “Silence is Golden.” – Go into a quiet room. The best time to develop your ritual is

when there is no one to bother you and nothing to distract you. So yea…that means no phones and no Twitter.

•  Consider your “pursuit of happiness.” – Think about a couple of things that make you smile and bring you genuine happiness. It doesn’t have to be something major like getting an A on a nuclear physics paper. It can be something like hearing a motivational message, cooking a healthy meal, singing a song you really like, or taking a walk by yourself. These things will help you find your ritual.

•  Jot and don’t forget – Write your happy thoughts down on an index card and put it somewhere that is easily accessible.

•  NOW WAIT… Yea, that’s right. Don’t immediately act out your ritual. Why you ask? Because you will probably view this ritual as an “exercise,” and the ritual will not be effective. Wait until your boss pisses you off, your spouse gets under your skin, or until you are just having an awful day.

•  Read and take action- When the “day” comes, find that card, read it, and do something that’s on it. Clear your mind to and just focus on the things that make you happy.
