God in Nature Tardigrade (Water Bear)

There is a common misconception that cock-

roaches can survive a nuclear holocaust. This is

actually not true. However, would you like to

know about an animal that could literally survive

exactly that? The Tardigrade, commonly referred

to as a Water Bear, is likely the most extreme of

living organisms. Their average size is about that

of a grain of sand. They are incredibly small but

do not let their size fool you! They are arguably

the toughest animal on God’s green earth! Tardi-

grades reside in nearly every corner of the world;

from the coldest and hottest environments to the heights of the Himalayas and the depths of the oceans, there

you will find Tardigrades. Water Bears can survive some of the most hazardous environments on this planet.

Water Bears have been known to survive temperatures exceeding -458 ̊ (close to absolute zero) for several

minutes and as high as 300 F̊! They have been found living in boiling hot springs where all other forms of life are

not able to survive. They can survive in the near vacuum of space for extended periods of time. Also, they can

survive as high as 500,000 rads of ionizing radiation. In comparison, human beings die after exposure to a mere

1,000 – 2,000 rads! This means that they could literally survive nuclear fallout. Some species can survive 6,000

times atmospheric pressure at sea level which is 6 times more pressure than at the deepest point in the ocean!

Likely the most impressive ability of the Tardigrade is their ability to reanimate after cryptobiosis. This means

that their metabolism is reduced to a level where it cannot be detected without disappearing altogether after

losing up to 97% of their moisture. They can essentially come back to life after lying dormant for anywhere be-

tween 10 and over 120 years with the simple addition of a drop of water. This tiny creature’s ability to endure

extremes absolutely dwarfs our very own. Our God always has a way to stupefy and humble us with the sheer

diversity of His creation.

“But now ask the beasts to teach you, the birds of the air to tell you; Or speak to the earth to instruct

you, and the fish of the sea to inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of God has

done this?” Job 12:7-9

Clergy Abuse

In an effort to more thoroughly care for and expedite the healing process of our Catholic brothers

and sisters who have been victims of clerical abuse, Archbishop Wester is requiring us to reach

out to our parishioners. If you have been a victim of clerical abuse during your life regardless of

parish or diocese, please call the church office with your name and contact information. Fr. Lalo

will then contact you to speak with you about your experience. Please remember that your

involvement in this healing process is entirely confidential.
