THE TRUTH BEHIND THE DA VINCI CODEIn 2006, Sony Pictures released a remarkable and intriguing film entitled The Da Vinci

Code, based on the novel of the same name by Dan Brown. In the film, religious leaders andprofessors are in a race to discover the secrets of an organization called the Priory of Sion. Thebiggest secret kept by this organization is supposedly that Jesus Christ and a woman whose name isrecorded in the Bible as Mary Magdalene had a child, and that their family 55 line continues to thisday. In a TV interview, Dan Brown stated that, in his book, "all of the art, architecture, secret rituals,secret societies, all of that is historical fact." However, while the Priory of Sion did exist, it's nothinglike the one which is so central to The Da Vinci Code.

The Priory of Sion was started in France in 1956 by a skillful liar named PierrePlantard. Priory means religious house, and Sion was a hill in the town of Annemasse, where thePriory was started by Plantard and four of 60 his friends. At first, their group fought for housingrights for local people, and their offices were at Plantard's apartment. The organization promised to

benefit the weak and the oppressed, and to do good in general. However, there was a darker side tothe Plantard's Priory.Plantard actually hoped to use the Priory of Sion to claim to be a descendant of French

kings. Between the years 1961 and 1984, Plantard created the enigma of a much more powerfulPriory than his insignificant organization. 65 First, in order to give the impression that the Priory

began in 1099, Plantard and his friend Philippe de Cherisey created documents, called the SecretDossiers of Henri Lobineau, and illegally put them into the National Library of France. Next,Plantard got author Gerard de Sede to write a book in 1967 using the false documents; the book

became very popular in France. This phenomenon is similar to the popularity ofThe Da Vinci Code,where a book based on false information or speculation becomes popular. 70

Matters were complicated when in 1969, an English actor and science-fiction writer

named Henry Lincoln read Gerard de Sede's book. Lincoln did not know of Plantard and his schemes,and may have been a victim of the hoax. He seemed to believe what he read, and jumped to evenmore wild conclusions, which he published in his 1982 book, The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail. Heand his co-authors declared as fact that the Priory started in 1099; that its leaders included LeonardoDa Vinci, Isaac Newton, and Victor Hugo; that the Priory protects the descendants of Jesus 75 Christand Mary Magdalene; and that these descendants ruled France from A.D. 447 to 751. All this was

based on reading a novel based on the false facts from documents which were a hoax. Most modernhistorians do not consider Lincoln's book to be a serious work of history.

How can we be so sure that Plantard created this hoax? Well, the best witness to a crime is thecriminal himself. Over 100 hundred letters between Plantard, de Cherisey, and de Sede, discovered byresearcher Jean-Luc 80 Chaumeil, show clearly that they were trying to pull an elaborate hoax. Infact, in the

1990s, Plantard got in trouble with the law, and his house was searched. Within it were found many falsedocuments, most harmless, some of which said he was the true king of France. As a final embarrassment,Plantard had to swear in a court of law that the enigma of the Priory of Sion was the work of his imagination.

The Priory of Sion was started in France in 1956 by a skillful liar named PierrePlantard.Priory means religious house, and Sion was a hill in the town of Annemasse, where thePriory was started by Plantard and four of 60 his friends. At first, their group fought for housingrights for local people, and their offices were at Plantard's apartment. The organization promisedto benefit the weak and the oppressed, and to do good in general. However, there was a darker

side to the Plantard's Priory.Plantard actually hoped to use the Priory of Sion to claim to be a descendant ofFrench kings. Between the years 1961 and 1984, Plantard created the enigma of a much morepowerful Priory than his insignificant organization. 65 First, in order to give the impression thatthe Priory began in 1099, Plantard and his friend Philippe de Cherisey created documents, calledthe Secret Dossiers of Henri Lobineau, and illegally put them into the National Library ofFrance. Next, Plantard got author Gerard de Sede to write a book in 1967 using the falsedocuments; the book became very popular in France. This phenomenon is similar to thepopularity of The Da Vinci Code, where a book based on false information or speculationbecomes popular. 70

Matters were complicated when in 1969, an English actor and science-fiction

writer named Henry Lincoln read Gerard de Sede's book. Lincoln did not know of Plantard andhis schemes, and may have been a victim of the hoax. He seemed to believe what he read, andjumped to even more wild conclusions, which he published in his 1982 book, The Holy Bloodand the Holy Grail. He and his co-authors declared as fact that the Priory started in 1099; that itsleaders included Leonardo Da Vinci, Isaac Newton, and Victor Hugo; that the Priory protects thedescendants of Jesus 75 Christ and Mary Magdalene; and that these descendants ruled Francefrom A.D. 447 to 751. All this was based on reading a novel based on the false facts fromdocuments which were a hoax. Most modern historians do not consider Lincoln's book to be aserious work of history.

How can we be so sure that Plantard created this hoax? Well, the best witness to a crime is thecriminal himself. Over 100 hundred letters between Plantard, de Cherisey, and de Sede, discovered by

researcher Jean-Luc 80 Chaumeil, show clearly that they were trying to pull an elaborate hoax. Infact, inthe 1990s, Plantard got in trouble with the law, and his house was searched. Within it were found manyfalse documents, most harmless, some of which said he was the true king of France. As a finalembarrassment, Plantard had to swear in a court of law that the enigma of the Priory of Sion was the workof his imagination.

Two years later, he joined theUnited States Army so that he could go to the Army Aie Service flight-training school.After completing his training, he was hired to fly mail between St. Louis and Chicago.Then came the historic flight across the Atlantic. In 1919, a New York City hotel owneroffered a prize of $25,000 to the first pilot to fly nonstop from New York to Paris. NineSt. Louis business leaders helped pay for the plane Lindbergh designed especially for theflight. Lindbergh tested the plane by flying it from San Diego to New York, with anovernight stop in St. Louis. The flight took only 20hours and 21minutes, atranscontinental record.

Nine days later, on May 20, 1927, Lindbergh took off from Long Island, NewYork, at 7:52 a.m. He landed at Paris on May 21 at 10:21 p.m. He had flown more than3,600 miles in less than thirty four hours. His flight made news around the world. He wasgiven awards and parades everywhere he went. He was presented with theU.S.Congressional Medal of Honor and the first Distinguished Flying Cross. For a longtime, Lindbergh toured the world as a US goodwill ambassador. He met his future wife,Anne Morrow, in Mexico, where her father was the United States ambassador.

During the 1930s, Charles and Anne Lindbergh worked for various airlinecompanies, charting new commercial air routes. In 1931, for a major airline, they charteda new route from the east coast of the United States to the Orient. The shortest, mostefficient route was a great curve across Canada, over Alaska, and down to China andJapan. Most pilots familiar with the Arctic did not believe that such a route was possible.The Lindberghs took on the task of proving that it was. They arranged for fuel andsupplies to be set out along the route. On July 29, they took off from Long Island in aspecially equipped small seaplane. They flew by day and each night landed on a lake or a

river and camped. Near Nome, Alaska, they had their first serious emergency. Out ofdaylight and nearly out of fuel, they were forced down in a small ocean inlet. In the nextmornings light, they discovered they had landed on barely three feet of water. Aging is the process of growing old. It occurs eventually in every living thing provided, ofcourse, that an illness or accident does not kill it prematurely. One of the most serious changes of old age occurs in the arteries, the blood vessels that leadfrom the heart. They become thickened and constricted, allowing less blood to flow to the rest ofbody. This condition accounts, directly or indirectly, for many of the diseases of the aged. Itmay, for example, result in heart attack.

Aging is not a uniform process. Different parts of the body wear out at different rates. Thereare great differences among people in their rate of aging. Even the cells of the body differ in theway they age. The majority of cells are capable of reproducing themselves many times duringthe course of a lifetime. Nerve cells and muscle fibers can never be replaced once they wear out.
