Numbers, Symbols &WordsYour Daily Warmup PuzzlesI n bridge we manipulate puzzles involving numbers, symbols and words and strive for logical solutions (or atleast inspired guesses). In each issue this week we wil lfeature a pair of number/symbol puzzles, an easy one hereon page two, and a harder one on the inside back cover;and, a word puzzle at the bottom of this page. In al l ofthese puzzles, you wi l l be able to solve them withoutguesswork, by logical deductions alone, which is whatwe're al l trying to do at the table.Today's puzzle is cal led Tents. I t's yet another grid, but

this time some of the cel ls have trees. You must find theempty cel ls that contain tents. Here are the constraints:—there are exactly as many tents as trees—each tent is horizontal ly or vertical ly (not diagonal ly)

adjacent to one tree of its own, but may also be adjacentto other trees (even diagonal ly)—no two tents are adjacent horizontal ly, vertical ly, nor

even diagonal ly—the number of tents in each row and column match

the numbers on the right side and bottom of the gridhe easy version is below. Hints, and a more difficul t

puzzle wi l l appear on page 15. Answers wi l l appear intomorrow's Dai ly Bul letin. For more warmups, check outthe word puzzle on page 5.

Word puzzles this week are from an app cal led Unolingo. I t is a crossword without clues! There are exactly26 blanks to fi l l in, and each letter of the alphabet fi l l s one of the blanks. The puzzles are designed so that

only common Engl ish words areused, no centuries-old arcanewords that are found incrosswords. You 'l l do best bylooking for the locations of thehard letters first: QU, X, J . Besure to mark off the letters usedin the checking area beside thegrid to keep track of yourprogress. I t's not as difficu l t asit seems! I did most of these in3-6 minutes.

A l ist of words in the puzzle(in alphabetical order) is onpage 7. I f you need a morel imited hint, ask someone toexamine the word l ist and tel lyou if the l ist contains, forexample, a six-letter wordstarting with D and ending in E.

The Hideous Hog (In Training) continued his good week so far, picking both finals after a demanded redo. H isoriginal predictions in the top bracket were scuttled when the four semifinal ists suddenly became three, leading to a round-robin, leading to the two teams original ly scheduled to play in one semifinal ending up inthe final instead. "I can't be expected to pick when a team wil l be unable to attend because of a suddeni l lness, " protested HHIT on the long-distance telephone to the Bul letin editor's room.

In the future, four pairs from each District wi l l beauthorized to compete in the Finals of the NorthAmerican Pairs in Fl ights B and C.

The District establ ished a fragrance pol icy atRegionals which is simi lar to the ACBL's position atNABC's: to remind players not to wear fragrances atbridge events for the benefit of those who have anextreme sensitivity to these scents. Reminders wi l l beregularly placed in the Dai ly Bul letins at Regionals.

There wi l l only be ashort break on Sunday between the Swiss Team andFast Pairs games, so you may want to take advantageof the box lunches. The lunch wi l l include sandwich, bottled water, cookie, and fruit. The sandwich choicesinclude vegetarian wrap, turkey croissant, and roastbeef on a kaiser rol l .The Lounge wi l l have Double Happy Hour in the

bar from 9pm to closing. Watch the restaurant formeal specials and for special express items you canget quickly when gametime is imminent.

As you can see in the photo, our new boardsand cards don't always drop down into the slotsas intended. One factor is that the TournTablescards are new and sl ippery, al lowing a bit ofunwanted card migration, usual ly from East toWest, not always caught (try as I might). Be sureto count your cards before you count your points!

A reminder to players not to wear cologne, perfumeor scented lotions whi le attending bridge events. Some players have an extreme sensitivity to thesescents, producing headaches or breathing problems, and since bridge requires us to be near one another, this puts these players at a severe disadvantage. TheDistrict has joined the ACBL in deciding not to adoptan official pol icy, instead relying on the goodwi l l of i tsmembers to refrain from using fragrances.

Tents HintsIntroductory Puzzle on Page 2Tents recap: find the tents: there is one tent for every tree in thegrid. Each tent has its own tree to which it is horizontal ly orvertical ly adjacent, but may be adjacent to other trees as wel l .No two tents are adjacent horizontal ly, vertical ly, nor evendiagonal ly. The numbers on the right side and bottom indicatehow many tents are in each row and column.Tents hints: Al ternate between two strategies: 1 ) Marking off

cel ls where no tents can possibly be: rows or columns markedwith a zero, and cel ls adjacent to no tree. 2) Looking forremaining possible spaces where there must be a tent and fi l l ingthem in. Once you find a tent, you can mark off the cel lsadjacent to it (even diagonal ly). Whenever you mark off cel lsthere is the possibi l i ty that a row or column wil l have onlyenough possible cel ls left to make it clear where the tents mustgo. Sometimes you can work out that a tent must be in one oftwo adjacent cel ls, which means that a third cel l adjacent to bothcannot contain a tent. You 'l l enjoy watching it come together. Now can you do the easy puzzle on page 2? How about the
