PREFACE
The awareness that protection of the global environment is a common problem for the mankind is growing stronger. Measures such as prevention of global warming by reducing carbon dioxide emissions, changing economic patterns through the reduction and recycling of waste materials, and preventing environmental pollution through chemical substance control and the like, have become increasingly important.
With the basic environmental ideal of becoming “an enterprise friendly to man and the earth”, as well as one “with sincerity and creativeness", our company is promoting environmental measures in all phases of product development and activities at factories and work sites. In order to make these activities more effective, we seek to reduce environmental loads and avoid environmental risks through reinforcement of protection activities, working together with our suppliers in the purchase of materials that impose minimum environmental loads.
With such goals in mind, we recently compiled the Sharp “Green Purchasing Guidelines", as we wish to promote, in coordination with our business partners, the manufacture of products as well as business activities friendly to the environment.
We would like to ask for your understanding and cooperation in the implementation of these guidelines. May, 2001

Green Purchasing Guidelines
1. Purpose With the basic environmental ideal of becoming “an enterprise friendly to man and the
earth”, and one “with sincerity and creativeness", our company is promoting its “3G-1R strategies" with action themes aimed at the development of environmentally friendly products (Green Products), manufacturing (Green Factory), corporate climate (Green Mind), as well as recycling. Through the implementation of our Green Purchasing policies we are working in concert with the business partners from whom we procure our materials to realize the environmental ideals of our corporation and world society.
2. Evaluation Criteria and Purchasing Decisions
In the past, we purchased parts and materials based on the criteria of quality, cost and delivery terms. From now on, however, we will implement comprehensive decisions about purchasing that include environmental considerations. Our decisions will be based on the criteria of “environmental management", which evaluate our suppliers’ organizational measures for environmental protection, as well as on the criteria of “delivered goods", which evaluate their efforts to reduce environmental loads imposed by parts and materials we purchase from them (raw materials,multi-purpose parts, finished goods, semi-finished goods, supplementary materials, etc.).
In the “Environmental Management Evaluation", 25 items such as introduction of Environmental Management System (ISO14001, EMAS*1etc.), for example, are made evaluation criteria. In the “Delivered Goods Evaluation", 13 items such as packaging materials and chemical substances of delivered goods, resource and energy saving are made evaluation criteria.
*1 EMAS = Eco-Management & Audit Scheme)
2-1. Evaluation of Environmental Management Items of evaluation of measures for environmental protection by suppliers are shown as
follows (in actual survey, see 25items...Inquiry Sheet 1 p.14) 1. Compliance with ISO14001 or EMAS 2. In cases other than 1 above, evaluate the following:
1) Corporate principles, policy and targets for environmental protection; 2) Organization and system for promoting environmental activities.
Purchase Decision Delivered Goods Evaluation Environmental ManagementEvaluation +
Comprehensive Evaluation
2
3) System for promoting environmental activities, such as compliance with laws and regulations in relation to the environments, establishment of targets for reduction of environmental loads, etc.
4) System for confirming progress of environmental activities. 5) Education about the environ ment.
3 System for green purchase of parts and materials. 4 Disclosure of measures on environmental protection activities and their results. 5 Ability to supply MSDS*2 upon delivery of chemical substances (liquid, powder, gas, etc.).
*2 MSDS = Chemical Safety Data Sheet (data sheet providing information on hazards, safe
handling and legal regulations of chemical substances.
2-2. Evaluation of Delivered Goods
Parts, Materials
Items of evaluation on parts and materials we purchase from our suppliers (raw materials, multi-purpose parts, finished and semi-finished goods, supplementary materials, etc.) are as shown in the following (on actual survey, see 13 items inquiry sheet 2 p.15): 1. With regard to packaging materials of delivered goods, measures considerate of the
environment. 2. Delivered goods do not contain substances prohibited by domestic laws, carcinogenic
substances, chronically toxic substances, chemical substances specified by laws and regulations on the environment, the main legal regulations of Europe, as well as “Sharp Independent Criteria " (Table 2 [List of Chemical Substances Subject to Contents Survey of Parts and Materials (p.18)]
With regard to prohibited chemical substances, manufacturing groups on their independent judgement can add any substance as voluntary regulation substance.
3. Working on resource saving such as reduction of used materials, use of recycled materials, implementation of recycle, etc.
4. With regard to finished goods and unit goods using electrici-ty, reduction of power consumption is carried out.
Chemicals, Equipments, Tools, Printed Matters, Stationeries
Chemicals, equipments, tools, printed matters and stationeries we purchase from our suppliers will be handled as indicated in the following: 1. For chemicals to be used at our factories, we ask vendors to provide MSDS and carry out
survey separately based on our“Chemicals Management System". 2. For equipment and tools for production and research, we give priority to purchase of
equipment with mechanisms and functions that reduce environmental loads. 3. For printed materials (except those packed with products), we give priority to purchase
of those using recycled paper. 4. For stationery and office supplies, we make our evaluations in line with the guidelines
for eco-mark products or green purchase network at the time of selection for purchase.
3
3. Implementation 3-1. Time of Inquiry
In principle, inquiries are carried out once a year. In addition, we ask new suppliers to submit inquiry sheets at the time of delivery, as well as when the contents of the “Environmental Management Evaluation" and “Delivered Goods Evaluation" are modified.
3-2. Subjects of Inquiry 1. “Environmental Management Evaluation" are applied to suppliers (production work sites) of parts,
materials, chemicals, equipments, tools, printed materials, stationeries, etc. 2. “Delivered Goods Evaluation" is applied to parts and materials, and inquiry is undertaken for
each category of Table-1 [Category for Inquiry of Delivered Goods (pp.4-6)]. 3. “Parts, Materials, Basic Data", inquiries are carried out for every delivered part and item of
material.
