Inadditiontoprovidingaccesstothesenewdevelopments,thegoaloftheprojectwastocreate apedestrianfocusedenvironmentto“activateandconnect”SecondStreetwithintheCity’s overall frameworkandtoreinforcetheurbanindustrialcharacterofthiscorridor .Thecorridor alsopresentedopportunitiestotellthestoryofthehistoryoftheRiverMarket’sdevelopmentas wellasexpandonthestoryoftheTownofKansas,theoriginalsettlementontheriverthatgrew intoKansasCitythroughinterpretiveelements. Inconjunctionwithrecentredevelopmentefforts,thecreationofplazasandtheintroduction ofpublicarthavebroughtresidents,employees,andvisitorstothestreetandactivatedthis northernedgeoftheRiverMarketneighborhood.Thedesignembracestheindustrialcharacter ofthearea.Hoodedpedestrianlightsreectthosehistoricallylocatedoverdockdoors.Steelpost andcablerailingsseparatedocksfromsidewalks.MassivesteelI-Beamsareplacedthroughout thecorrido rtoserveasbenchesandare contrastedb ycolorfulnati veplantin gsanddecora tive pavingtocreatecomfortablepedestrianzones.Thestreetscapedesignalsointegratespublic artworkandaunique“lightwall”featureplacedalongtheedgeofanexistingpowersubstation. Conuence was selected to implement a previously adopted corridor master plan for the

SecondStreetCorridorin thehistoricRiverMarketDistrict of downtown KansasCity. Long

used forrailroadaccess tothe RiverMarket, thecorridorpresenteda uniqueset ofissues

andopportunities.Whiledevelopers hadbegunconverting longabandonedwarehouses and

factoriesintoresidentialloftsandofce/retailspaces,renewaleffortsweredelayedduetothe

lackofastreet.

Inadditiontoprovidingaccesstothesenewdevelopments,thegoaloftheprojectwastocreate

apedestrianfocusedenvironmentto“activateandconnect”SecondStreetwithintheCity’s

overallframeworkandtoreinforcetheurbanindustrialcharacterofthiscorridor.Thecorridor

alsopresentedopportunitiestotellthestoryofthehistoryoftheRiverMarket’sdevelopmentas

wellasexpandonthestoryoftheTownofKansas,theoriginalsettlementontheriverthatgrew

intoKansasCitythroughinterpretiveelements.

Inconjunctionwithrecentredevelopmentefforts,thecreationofplazasandtheintroduction

ofpublicarthavebroughtresidents,employees,andvisitorstothestreetandactivatedthis

northernedgeoftheRiverMarketneighborhood.Thedesignembracestheindustrialcharacter

ofthearea.Hoodedpedestrianlightsreectthosehistoricallylocatedoverdockdoors.Steelpost

andcablerailingsseparatedocksfromsidewalks.MassivesteelI-Beamsareplacedthroughout

thecorridortoserveasbenchesandarecontrastedbycolorfulnativeplantingsanddecorative

pavingtocreatecomfortablepedestrianzones.Thestreetscapedesignalsointegratespublic

artworkandaunique“lightwall”featureplacedalongtheedgeofanexistingpowersubstation.
