The Northwood Art Docent Program is sponsored by the Northwood PTA and is coordinated and presented by parent volunteers. We are always looking for more volunteers to help with the art lessons – no art experience is necessary, just a willingness to help! Email [email protected] if interested in getting involved. Art Docent Program Update 2 nd Grade – “Clay Family Portraits” Dear Parents, Recently your child participated in an art docent lesson in which the students were able to create family portraits with clay! We are so lucky to have a kiln at Northwood and to offer our students the opportunity to work with clay. Here are some of the benefits of kids working with clay (source: www.artistreevt.org) : • Motor Skills - Clay is an excellent way to improve dexterity and strengthen large and fine motor skills. • Creative Problem Solving - Playing with clay stimulates children’s imaginations. • Therapeutic – Clay is a wonderful tactile medium that can be very calming for both children and adults. • Self Esteem - Children are easily able to mold and shape clay. The feeling that they are in control gives them the confidence to communicate their vision. • Pride & Accomplishment - Children learn to derive a sense of personal accomplishment from finishing a clay project. The take home projects at the end of class are treasures to be cherished! Questions you may want to ask your child: • Did you enjoy playing with the clay? • Which tools did you use to create your clay faces?
