Dear students, academics, expert researchers, EMUNI partners,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the second EMUNI student multi-conference Research Souk, an event being implemented at the same time in EMUNI member sites in different countries of the Union for the Mediterranean region. This year it gathers as many as 19 institutions from 14 countries, encouraging its participants to present their projects on Union for the Mediterranean priority projects. I would like to thank sincerely the local organisers, students, researchers and other participants for contributing to the

success of our conference and thus demonstrating how we can implement the title of this years' ReSouk Living together in the multi-cultural society in practice. Moreover, the European Union declared this year was as the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. EMUNI has been created to be a real bridge between institutions, academics, students and people of good will who believe that the real learning society transcends all forms of boundaries. May I also thank the Secretary General for the Union of the Mediterranean for his personal encouragement and for the belief that EMUNI can indeed make a difference. We believe ReSouk from the Bibliotecha Alexandrina can be considered as a significant EMUNI contribution to multicultural dialogue and mutual understanding among people and creation of an area of mutual tolerance, respect and well-being in spite of diverse backgrounds and cultures in the Euro-Mediterranean Region.

During the past decade there have been several initiatives for collaboration between Egypt and countries of the Euro-Mediterranean region in aspects of culture, education and research. Among the most successful of such initiatives is the Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI), which, since its establishment, has been the driving force behind the development of numerous graduate and research programmes within its partner institutions. Therefore, it is a great pleasure to have the second EMUNI Research Souk here in Alexandria, hosted

by Alexandria University and Bibliotheca Alexandrina to be able to demonstrate, through joint projects and activities, that education, science and technology can be our means for living together in a multi cultural society.

I would like to thank EMUNI for offering us to participate in this successful initiative beside the University of Alexandria. Based in Egypt, the Anna Lindh Foundation (ALF) is happy to collaborate in bringing together such a gathering of Researchers, giving them the opportunity to present their work to a broader public. We consider the initiative appropriate for exchanging ideas and methodologies and for the dissemination of innovative ideas and the promotion of free and critical thinking.

In order to better understand the challenges of human and cultural relations, the ALF is about to launch the first Anna Lindh Report on Intercultural Trends, in the Euromed Region. The Report will start from a reliable Survey among 13.000 people, which is the basis for several analysis written by some renowned experts. It will be complemented by good practices coming from our civil society Networks, as an example of how to combine academic research and social experience. We are honoured to bring to this Souk the methodology of the Report and what we learned from the fist Anna Lindh Forum celebrated in Barcelona recently with the participation of more than 1000 people coming from Euromed civil society. Since the onset of the Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI) as one of the priority areas of the Union for the Mediterranean, Alexandria University has been keen to collaborate with EMUNI in various aspects. Today, Alexandria University is honoured to host the second EMUNI Research Souk which elaborates a major principle for international collaboration in the twenty first century; that is Living Together in the Multi Cultural Society. I take this opportunity to welcome all participants of the Souk whether in person or by videoconferencing.

EMUNI, as an international network of universities, provides a milieu for cultural and scientific collaboration between its members. Accordingly, Alexandria University is looking forward to a long term partnership with EMUNI and its members aiming for the benefit of our students, researchers and the community at large.

Its mission is to be a centre of excellence for the production and

dissemination of knowledge, and to be a place of dialogue and understanding between cultures and peoples.

Joining researchers from the Mediterranean is an initiative that demonstrates what people can do outside official working channels. It is the mission of this Library to bring together scientists of all ages and of different countries with the objective of scientific promotion. The Main aims of this event are helping young scientists and providing an environment that both, encourages and inspires scientists and those who are keen to achieve their personal and professional goals.

EMUNI Research Souk* is:a multi-conference, implementing at the same time at EMUNI members in different

countries of Euro-Mediterranean region;a student research conference, participants are stimulated to present their project on UfM

priorities (De-pollution of the Mediterranean, Maritime and Land Highways, Civil Protection, Alternative Energies: Mediterranean Solar Plan, Higher Education and Research, Euro-Mediterranean University, The Mediterranean Business Development Initiative);an EMUNI contribution to multicultural dialogue and mutual understanding among people.

The Euro-Mediterranean area is a region of continuously evolving and intense economic, cultural, political and social interaction and exchange between peoples of different cultural, ethnic and religious origin, basing on a common historical background and shared democratic values.

Research Souk 2010 with the title Living Together in the Multi-cultural Society will try to tackle these issues and contribute to the importance of "living together" or a better future for all of us.

*Souk is an Arabic word for Market or Bazaar

Mediterranean Youth and Education : A Centre Stage for Future UfM Cooperation

Ahmad Masa'dehSecretary General, Union for the Mediterranean

Ahmad Masa'deh is the Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean. He was born in Amman on 19 May 1969. He studied law at the University of Jordan. He thereafter pursued higher education, graduating (Diploma in the US Legal System) from Georgetown Law Center, (Master of Laws LL.M.) from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville USA in 1992, and (PhD) from King's College London in 2000.Ahmad Masa'deh's political career began in 2004 when he held the position of Minister for Public Sector Reform from 2004 to 2005. He articulated and supervised a national program for reforming public administrations and civil service, and was member in numerous reform and privatization steering committees.During the years 2006 and 2010, Ahmad Masa'deh was the 7th Ambassador of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the European Union, Belgium, Norway and Luxembourg. He was also the Jordanian Coordinator to the Union for the Mediterranean and Jordan's Representative to NATO. Apart from his political career, Ahmad Masa'deh practiced and lectured law since 1993. From 2000 to 2004 he was Managing Partner of Khalaf Masa'deh & Partners, one of the leading Jordanian law firms. From 2000 to 2005 he was Assistant Professor of International Business Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Jordan, where he also held various positions among which is Assistant Dean for Development. This legal career led him to be appointed as Member of the Board of the Council of the World Trade Law Association in London 2000-03, Member of the Board of Royal Jordanian Airlines 2005-06, and Member of the Panels of Arbitrators of the World Bank (International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes ICISD) 2001-07. Dr. Masa'deh is the author of Investment and Competition in International Policy: Prospects for WTO law, Cameron May International Law Publishers, London, 2003. In 2006 Ambassador Masa'deh was decorated by His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan with the Order of Independence of the First Class, and in 2010 he was decorated by His Majesty King Albert II of Belgium with the Order of the Crown of the Grand Cross Class (Grand-Croix de L'Ordre de la Couronne).

Mohamed HsairiDirector General, Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Tunisia

Mohamed Hsairi, currently holding the post of Director General and Counselor at the MFA, Tunisia. He started his MFA of Tunisia career in 1981 and worked for three years as head of information department. From 1984-1990 he was a minister counsellor at the embassy of Tunisia in Rabat Morocco. Between 1991-1996 he was posted as ambassador of Tunisia to Mauritania. In 1996 he became Director General of Arab Islamic at the MFA. Between 1997-2002 he served as Ambassador of Tunisia in Syria and in 2004 for two years as Ambassador of Tunisia to Kuwait. His Diplomatic mission includes the Marrakech summit for the union of Arabic Maghreb, Arabic league, OCI, OUA and UA. For his work, he received a Syrian and Mauritanian national decoration.

Kyriaki PapageorgiouDelegation of the European Commission in Egypt

Kyriaki Papageorgiou has a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology with an emphasis in Science and Technology Studies from the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Papageorgiou's dissertation is entitled "Seeds of Doubt." Her field research was supported by the National Science Foundation, Science and Society Program, the Wenner-Gren Foundation, and the Institute for Global Conflict and Cooperation. In 2006, Papageorgiou received the Regents Dissertation Writing Fellowship and a Graduate Student Fellowship from the Newkirk Center for Science and Society. In 2007, Dr. Papageorgiou received UNESCO fellowship in the field of Ethics of Science and Technology. Dr. Papageorgiou was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, at the Virtual Knowledge Studio, Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Science in Amsterdam in the spring of 2008. She is currently working as the Science and Technology Coordinator at the Delegation of the European Union to Egypt.
