It has been an interesting golf season so far. We have been relatively dry this season and temperatures haven’t been too brutally hot. But the last 3-4 weeks have brought us a rather sticky environment. While that may not seem all that bad to you, the grass hasn’t been too happy. Fortunately, I think that time has passed and we have weathered those conditions well. The welcome relief of fall weather is just around the corner, and along with that, my favorite time for golf.Fall is the time for plant health and setting the stage for the following season. Greens aerification will take place on Tuesday, September 6th and finish on Wednesday,September 7th. This aerification is the single most important task we complete all season. We will be removing organic matter, improving infiltration and water movement down through the soil profile, improving nutrient uptake and growing new roots. As it pertains to playability, aerification continues to promote firmness and true ball roll.

Very soon we will begin additional aerification practices throughout the golf course. Fairways will once again be slit with the Vertiquake. Tees and approaches will have a hole poked in them, topdressed, and problem fairway areas will likely have the same process. Again this will help promote not only better playing conditions, but better plant health as well. Additionally this fall, we will begin mowing down our native areas. Herbicide applications will begin here, as well as in the general rough. Fall is the ideal time to combat weeds. Autumn may seem to be a time to wind down, but in the grounds department, we find it to be as busy a time of year as any. Between regular golf course maintenance, as well as preparing for winter, it is a scramble to complete everything prior to Dec 1st. It’s hard to believe that before long we will be shoveling snow and preparing for 2017.
