The 2009 CMA Hare Scramble serieswas memorable to say the least. There were amaz-

ing battles, some wicked rough and muddy races

and at the end of it, there were new champions

in every class except the Womens. Ainsley Farrtook home the Womens title for the second year

in a row. Brian Wojnarowski won the honour of

wearing the #1 on his plates, Adam Millson beat

out Michael Jonker to take the Expert titel. Greg

Filler took home the Intermediate title, Roger

Messier was the Vet Ex champ, Jesse Grummet

moved up from the Novice A class, Guido Knei-ing won the Veteran class and Brian Holloway

took home the Super Vet title. The junior classes,

split into a Mini and a Senior for the rst time,

were won by Jordan Fischer and Connor Brogan,

    respectively.

This book is a compilation of some of my

favourite photos from the season.I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Right now Im looking out my window and

I can see the 2010 season on the horizon. While I

cannot determine how this season will turn out, or

which of the new series will be triumphant, I am

sure that it will be another action packed season.

    See you in the woods!

The start is one o the most important part o an event. In both the Expert (below) and Pro (above) classes, the rstholeshot was a battle between Yamaha and KTM.

Round I:Port Colborne Its a rather cold morning, but the sun is shining, and the big ships move silently up the canals.

Theres a level o excitement in the pits as riders prepare or the rst race o the season. Riders line up, and a

pu o rarely seen blue smoke rises rom the line. The two stroke is alive, my riend, and it has ound a thriv-

ing home in the o road world.

The battle in the Pro class came down to the Boy who was and the Man who wanted. Chris Van Hove

was the youngest Pro to ever take home the #1 plate; Brian Wojnarowski has worked harder than most,

coming close two years in a row, only to take home the runner up spot. Not to be let out, KTM riders Aaron

Wilkins and Kevin Cockayne didnt make it easy or the ront runners, nor did Machine Racing Hondas TylerLinton, who was looking to improve on the #3 he earned in 2008.

Jesse Grummett, the ast juvie rom the Junior class, came to the scene ready to prove that last year

wasnt a fuke, and he was going to be the next big thing, and he did just that, soundly taking the #1 spot in

the rst race o the year. The same could be said or the Intermediate class Greg Filer. Filer, the KTM riding

Orange Blur, rode hard,. He was ollowed into the Intermediate class by several o his Novice A mates, includ-

ing Mark Koens, Nick Barker and Jamie West, among others.

The log hop was arightening obstacle in 2008,

but in 2009 it was deeplycarved out in the centre,

    making it much less in-

    timidating. Even still, it was

    hard to convince morning

    riders to tackle the beast.

    The aternoon classes had

    no choice, but many riders

made short work o the or-

    merly ormidable structure.

    Top Let: Michael Jonker.

    Top Right: Jamie West

    Bottom Right: Aaron Wilkins

    Bottom Let: Kevin Cock-ayne.

Jesse Grummett, #410 on the Yamaha, kicked up some roost in the youth class last year, and coming into the 2009season he had no intentions o slowing down. Still in high school, Grummett is on his way to becoming a name in the On-

tario o road scene. Its not easy to make it to the Pro class, and harder to do well. Not only are riders competing with one

another on an entirely dierent level, theyre also more strapped or time than their younger counter parts. Jobs, amilies,

responsibility; they all get in the way o riding, and seat time, as any rider will tell you, is vaulable when trying to improve.

Nice guys dont nish last; Im convinced they nishourth. Mike Vandenhoek, the two-time #4 plated rider, tends

to keep to himsel in the pits. Far rom the huge pit crews, the

big rigs and ancy set ups, Mike, along with a ew buddies, are

out to have a good time racing. A genuine good guy, and a

man o ew words, what really can be said about the #4 bike?

Well, not much, other than theres just somethingabout that combination o a Suzuki and the #4. Things didnt

turn out so great or Vandenhoek, unortunately. His bad

luck rom the previous season seemed to permiate into the

new one and again he was plagued with bike problems and

    crashes.

What was Mikes solution or when things got rough?

Do the best you can, and when thats just not good enough,

cheer on your riends, and those competing directly againstyou, rom the side lines.

    Now theres a nice guy!

Let: Mike Vandenhoek, two-time #4 rider, will wear the #7

in the 2010 season. Hes as ast as any man out there, and

has proven time and again he is capible o riding with Wojo,

24-year-old Dmitry D-mon Tsvetkov doesnt say much in the pits, or at least he doesnt say much to those hedoesnt know. He doesnt have to. He is one o the most consistent riders in the Intermediate class, scoring points at every

single round; no other rider in his class can claim that. Hailing rom Novosibirsk, Russia, D-mon seems to keep to himsel

and let his riding do the talking. He is a very talented rider, and I would not be surprised to see him take a title in the next

season. He will be one o the veteran riders making sure the young guns like Jesse Grummett dont just get to walk away

    with the Intermediate title.

Below: Dmitry Tsvetkov raced every single round o the series, and scored points each time, in the largest class. Not an easy

eat. While he did not win the Intermediate title, he will be well placed to take it in the coming seasons.

Age is just a number to the Vet Ex (above) and Super Vet (below) riders. Elmo Rutnik, #699, Stephen Hart, #616,Brian Holloway, #617, Roger Messier, #327, Randy Suest, #309, and Paul Lachance, #303, are all extremly talented riders. Theseriders, all over 39 years o age as o the start o the season, compete with each other in what are considered no progressive

classes, meaning winning a Vet Ex or Super Vet championship will not require you to be promoted in the next season.
