2G, 3G and 4G Technologies

Prerna: Hi Good afternoon! Its our turn today to stand on this side of the room.

You know first when four of us sat together to discuss, we had no clue what these

technologies were all about. But after some days of brain storming andresearching (thanks to Google) we understand the world of 2Gs and 3Gs and we

hope after 20 minutes from now, you do the same. And let me tell you that four

of us myself, meenu, harpreet and Rohit have tried really hard to not come up

with a formal presentation and convey our thoughts with a twist. So get ready for

a fun ride on 2G, 3G, and 4G technologies.

Rohit: Hello everyone! Thanks to Graham Bell. He made way for this tiny little

gadget in my hand. By the way what does G stands for in 1G, 2G..Graham Bell..

Well G stands for Generation. We have come a long way. Back in 1980s, wireless

standards were developed and these Old boys (looking at the presentation) of

first generation came into being. 1G technology replaced 0G technology, which

featured mobile radio telephones and such technologies as Mobile Telephone

System (MTS), Advanced Mobile Telephone System (AMTS), Improved Mobile

Telephone Service (IMTS), and Push to Talk (PTT).

Well then, people like you and me were born and scientists had to come up withsomething better and advanced and so 2G was born. 2G definitely has lot of

advantages: better capacity, reliability, provides more security. However, it does

have a few disadvantages too. Lets understand this with an example.

ACT 1: 1G/2G

Tower: Hi, I am good looking tower who knows all about technologies. 2G makes

use of digital radio signals, whereas 1G uses analog signals. Through 1G, a voice

call gets modulated to a higher frequency of about 150MHz and up as it istransmitted between radio towers.

However, 1G did maintain a few advantages over 2G. In comparison to 1G's

analog signals, 2G's digital signals are very reliant on location and proximity. Lets

see how?

Tower: So guys, you saw that when a 2G handset made a call far away from a cell

tower, the digital signal may not be strong enough to reach it. While a call made

from a 1G handset had generally poorer quality than that of a 2G handset, it

survived longer distances. This is due to the analog signal having a smooth curve

compared to the digital signal, which had a jagged, angular curve. As conditions

worsen, the quality of a call made from a 1G handset would gradually worsen, but

a call made from a 2G handset would fail completely.

3G

Rohit: Thats was all about 1G and 2G. Now lets step ahead and talk about 3G. 3G

is going to define the mobility for the next generation. 3G services will aid mobile

market transition from speech and low rate data transmission to medium and

high speed data for video. According to FICCI, the 3G Indian subscriber base is

expected to reach 90 million by 2013 and 3G service revenues are expected to

generate 15.8 US billion dollars. Well, thats a huge figure right. Now lets look at

our next act and understand how far ahead would 3G take us.

ACT 2: 2G Vs. 3G

Harpreet as 3G user and Meenu as 2G user.

Harpreet: Aree ab to maine bilkul latest technology ka phone le liya hai. Waise to

2008 mein BSNL ne 3G technology delhi aur Mumbai mein launch kar di thi, par

pure India mein to isi saal announce hua hai. Tata Docomo aur Reliance ne bhi ab

3G services provide

Aree aaj to cricket match hai na, apni 2G user friend se call karke phoochti hun.



Meenu: Hello!

Harpreet: Aree yaar cricket match shuru ho gaya kya?

Meenu: Haan yaar, shuru ho gaya hai, par mein abhi tak jam mein phase hui

huun. Arun se jhoot bolkar half day liya tha, uska bhi koi fayada nahi hua.

Harpreet: Achcha ek second hold kar. (Live mode) Oh teri Dhoni ne chakka

maraa.arre ye kya out out out bach gaya gaya

Meenu: Tu ghar pe hai, tujhe chutti kaise mili

Harpreet- HHHH Ohhho tujhe bataya tha ne 2G choor 3G le. Chal ab mein rakhti

huun, match miss ho raha hai.

Meenu: Arre arreeesun score to bata.

y Prerna: Conclusion of 3G: Well, I am definitely going to get Harpreets

phone and make sure I dont miss my favourite serials.

Rohit 4G: Well, if 3G did not take your breath away, you have 4G to blow your

mind. I just wonder how 4G is going to be. You know, there has been a lot of talk

about 4G mobile broadband recently and Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN's) has

announced that the first 4G field trials have been completed in Berlin.

As 4G seems to have taken a step closer to reality, I decided to do some research

and find out what advantages 4G may offer over 3G. The specifications for 4G are

not standardized yet but the following 3G vs 4G ACT gives an idea of what 4G is

likely to provide.



ACT 3: 3G/4G

Meenu as 3G Phone and Harpreet as 4G Phone (Technical specifications + Slide)

Meenu: Hi, I am the Popular phone. Widely used

Harpreet: And I am the future. Soon I will replace you..

Meenu: Oh really, I come with a frequency band between 1.8 and 2.5 Ghz.

Harpreet: Hehehe My frequency band starts with 2 Geegahz and goes up till 8

Ghz.

Meenu: Ok what about bandwidth?

Harpreet: Bandwidth: 5-20 Mhz

Meenu: Heheh mine is the same Miss 4G.

Harpreet: Lets talk about your Data rate?

Meenu: It is upto 2Mbps.

Harpreet: You are going to finish, mine starts with 100mbps. So bye.

Meenu: Not so soon, For the moment, I am the popular one.
