High Rate of Population Growth
What does this cartoon suggest?
By the end of this lesson you will be able to….
• Understand what is high rate of population growth. [What?]
• Identify the countries experiencing high population growth. [Where?]
• Explain the causes of high population growth.[Why?]
High rate of population growth• High rate of population growth means that
population is rapidly increasing.• It usually occurs in less developed countries where
there is low level of economic health and poor living conditions.
• This pattern can be seen through a population pyramid.
Population Pyramid
Where does high rate of population growth occurs?
Usually occurs in less developed countries like: Afghanistan, Congo, Libya, Zimbabwe, Laos, Cambodia, Phillipines
Causes of High Rate of Population Growth
For a population to increase rapidly, there must be _______ birth rate and ___________ death rate.
There can also be ______ birth rate and _____ death rate, but the birth rate must be much ________ than the death rate.
high low/falling

Factors that lead to a falling/low death rate
Better medical and health care
Medical care : Availability of hospitals, clinics, doctors, equipments, medicine and medical knowledge.
Health care: Immunization, nutritional knowledge, nutrition.
If medical and health care are improving in a countries, there will be less deaths . Why?
Factors that lead to a falling/low death rate
Better medical and health care
•Increase medical care facilities and services help to increase the life expectancy of citizens as new medicine and equipment can help increase the survival rate of people with illnesses and diseases.
•Increased health care facilities can ensure that people live a healthier life and are less prone to viruses and diseases, infant mortality rate will also decrease.
Factors that lead to a falling/low death rateImproved Hygiene
•If living conditions are clean and hygienic, people are less prone to falling sick and contracting diseases like malaria, diarrhoea and other water borne disease.
•In many countries, the death rate and infant mortality rate has greatly decreased when there is a supply of clean water, or when the environment is clear of disease-carrying pests and insects.
Recap:
• To have high rate of population growth, we must have______________ death rate as well as _______ birth rate.
low/fallinghigh
In your groups discuss how these factors lead to high birth rate
Early Marriages
Need for farm labor
Family Planning
• Family planning refers to how many children a couple plans to have.
• Lack of family planning accounts for high birth rate in less developed or developing countries. As couples are not aware of family planning methods as well as the benefit of having less children.More children = more mouths to feed = constant poverty.
• Families may also have many children due to religious or traditional beliefs/values. E.g. Hindu ceremonies require sons to perform rituals
Early Marriages
• Couple who marry at an early age tend to have larger families as the women who marry early have longer childbearing years.
• Couple forced to marry early are more likely to be uneducated and have inadequate knowledge about family planning.
Preference for Sons
• Some societies such as those in parts of China or India place a lot of importance in having sons.E.g. carry on family name, religious ceremonies, better labour for farms, inherit property.
• Thus, couples may continue to have children until they succeed in having sons
Need for farm labor
• People in less developed countries and rural areas often depend of farm labor for income.
• These people tend to have more children as they require more hands to work on the farm.
Recap
