    WEEK OF 8/20/12

here We Are in Place and TimeCelebrations

: Families recognize important personal and cultural events throughtraditions.

LiteracyThis year literacy in our classroom will model the curriculum goals of Chadwick International along

side the structure of a program called The Daily Five. The objective of this structure is to allowstudents a range of choices while supporting their independence in literacy. Please see the 3 rd page of this newsletter for more information.

In writing, I am looking forward to building a classroom of writers who write because they enjoy it, not because they feel they have to! This week we will discuss different reasons people write. Students willfocus on writing about topics that interests them without worrying about conventions.

NumeracyThis week our Numeracy focus will be on introducingthe Daily Calendar routines as well as somecomponents of the Everyday Math program. We willalso explore pattern blocks as tools to createillustrations for number stories.

UOIOur first Unit of Inquiry this year will focus on

personal and cultural events especially traditions andcelebrations. This aligns well with the beginning of theyear as we practice and establish important pieces of our classroom community such as our hopes anddreams, essential agreements, and routines.

    WEEK OF 8/20/12

    The Daily 5Dear Parents,

We have just begun our Daily 5 and FACEadventure! This is the reading and writingprogram implemented in my classroom.

Daily 5 is the structure we will use to planour morning literacy block. Children will bebusy completing meaningful literacy tasks. The choices will be:

*Read to self *Work on writing*Word Work *Listen to reading*Read to Someone

Also included on the Daily 5 schedule are*Meet with Ms. Eaton and *Guest Star. These portions of the schedule allow forGuided Reading time as well as ESOLsupport.

This week, we will be focusing onincreasing our stamina to work independently during Read to Self. Withinthe next few months, the other choices willbe introduced. While the students arecompleting their literacy tasks, I will bemeeting with small groups andconferencing with individual students.

Daily 5 is how we schedule our languageblock. FACE is what we study during thistime. FACE is an acronym for the four majorcomponents of reading. They are:

F for FluencyA for AccuracyC for ComprehensionE for Expanding Vocabulary

The children will learn reading strategieswithin each category. These strategies willbecome tools for the children to use to helpthemselves become better readers andwriters. I will keep you informed when newstrategies are introduced. Then, when youread with your child at home, you will beable to reinforce these concepts. It is going to be exciting to watch your

child's reading and writing skills blossomthroughout the year. If you have anyquestions regarding this program, pleaseask. I am always excited to share what Iknow about Daily 5 and FACE!

    Best,

    Ms. Eaton
