WORDS OF LIFE: The threat to religious freedom is larger than any single case or issue. It has its roots in the growing secularism of our culture, a secularism that seeks to marginalize the Church from culture and society. … The right to religious freedom is founded upon the intrinsic dignity of the human person. This is an issue of justice since the human person has a right to religious freedom. As Catholics, we must not waver in our defense of this sacred right. ~ Most Rev. Kevin C. Rhoades, Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend, “The Right to Religious Freedom,” Today’s Catholic News, June 26, 2013

MISSION STATEMENT: We, the Parish Family of St. Joachim & St. Joseph, of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, are a people with a heritage of faith. Encouraged by the Tradition of Christian hospitality, caring, and love towards neighbor, we are committed to continue to support each other on our pilgrim journey to the Father. In response to God’s Word, we strive through a sacramental life to bring all to a fuller understanding of God’s love by praying, teaching, and by witnessing to Christ, in the service of one another.

“My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established…” Luke 16:25-26

When God created the world He declared that it was good and He gave it to all mankind for us to enjoy. However, over the years we have created a chasm between those who have great gifts and those who do not. In today’s Gospel we see that with our own generosity we must bridge that gap between those who have much and those who have little or we may find ourselves on the wrong side of the chasm in the next life.

ARCHDIOCESE OF ST. LOUISOFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP

September 25, 2013

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On Sunday, October 6, 2013, there will be a special collection for the formation of permanent deacons in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. This collection relieves some of their financial burden for studies to become a deacon. Since 1977, 401 men have been ordained as permanent deacons in the Archdiocese. There currently are 184 active deacons ordained for the Archdiocese. There also are 72 retired deacons.

When a formal, reformed permanent diaconate program was initiated in the Archdiocese in January 1977, men went through a two-year formation program, with a third year of post- ordination formation. Since then, the program has gradually expanded to five years of formation, plus three more years of post-ordination formation.

Deacons serve in parishes, hospitals, archdiocesan agencies, and other organizations. Fully half of the active deacons continue to work full-time jobs, requiring them to balance family lives and professions with their ministry as a deacon.

During formation and after ordination, deacons offer their time, personal gifts and material goods to build up the Church in the Archdiocese without compensation. Their service extends into many areas of parish life, as they assist you, the pastors, and me in carrying out the mission of the Church.

I ask you to support the formation of permanent deacons by promoting the Special Collection for the Formation of Permanent Deacons on Sunday, October 6, 2013.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson Archbishop of St. Louis

THIS WEEK’S READINGS:In today’s Gospel we will hear another familiar parable, the story of Lazarus and the rich man. Note how Jesus nuances the message of the first reading that condemns conspicuous consumption. He makes it clear that the greater sin of the rich man is that he doesn’t even see Lazarus. As we listen to these readings today, can we think of how we may allow ourselves to be blinded to the needs of those around us? What can we do about that?

Question of the week: Who—specifically, concretely, personally—is Lazarus in my life, someone right before my very eyes in whom I need to see and serve Christ this week?

Stewardship: An Attitude of Gratitude

Many people are aware of the concept of Stewardship — recognizing that everything we have is a gift from God, being grateful, developing our gifts and generously sharing with others. But how do we practice stewardship in everyday life?

Invest in your prayer life — give TIME to GodPray to God frequently throughout the day, every day. Designate specific times and keep your appointment with God.• Talk and listen to God.a Jesus taught us to pray - “Our Father who art in heaven...” (Matthew 6:9-10)

Become willing to help others — share your TALENT• Participate in parish activities, ministries and organizations. Accept responsibility for helping others.• “For we are God’s co-workers.” (1 Corinthians 3:9)

Be generous with your financial gifts — offer your TREASURE• Generously return a portion of the money you have earned.• Give cheerfully, without expecting anything in return.• “He who sows bountifully will reap bountifully., .for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:6-7)

Stewardship isn’t an exclusive club. Everyone is a steward. But living a stewardship lifestyle isn’t easy. It requires a change that opens our hearts. It is a true conversion that means we:

* Make room for the Holy Spirit in our hearts.* Recognize other “gods” in our lives (job, money, power, ego) put God first.* Stop complaining about what we don’t have and be grateful for the gifts we have been given.* Decrease dependence on “me” (the belief that I have to make things happen) and increase trust in God.* Admit things don’t always go according to our schedule and that God’s plan is always better.

Stewardship isn’t a program to entice people to give more money — it’s a lifestyle of generously sharing our gifts. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to be stewards of the gifts we have been given. It is that simple... bold, but simple!

The cornerstone of Stewardship is prayer. Without prayer, we may be good volunteers or donors, but we are not good stewards!

But Stewardship requires action. Past generations built the Church. It is our responsibility to develop and nurture our gifts for future generations. As St. Francis of Assisi said, ‘Preach the Gospel at all times. Use words when necessary.”

Stewardship isn’t easy, but it has tremendous rewards - Love, Peace and Joy on earth and eternal life in heaven!

Question: When you stand before God and He asks what you have done with the gifts He has given you, how will you respond?

I’d like to personally invite you to share in the Joy of our Faith. Please consider how you may be able to share your Time, Talent and Treasure to help advance the mission of our parish.

Also, please share these thoughts with just one other person and invite them to attend Mass, join one of the many parish organizations and/or give generously to our parish.

Please return your Stewardship Commitment Card on the next two Sundays, Sept. 29th and Oct 6th.

The Eucharist is exposed for our benefit every First Friday of the month from 9 a. m. to 6 pm where Jesus is inviting you to spend some time with Him. And it's FREE.

We still have the hours of 12-1 pm and 4-5 pm open which need covering. If you are available please choose one hour during the day to give to our Lord!
