PREFACEOne of the things guitarists love the most is jamming. Jamming is a way of freeing your imagination; you simply grab your guitar and start playing whatever comes to your head, whatever you feel like saying. My experience as a teacher has showed me that students want to free themselves and be able to improvise over any chord progression, but they can't find the way to do it. Playing the right scale over a chord is a great place to start, but it is not helping enough; learning theory and harmony lets them understand everything, but it is not giving them everything they want. There is usually something missing: imitation. Students usually forget about listening to a great solo and trying to play it; they don't do it. Many musicians fall in the concept of "I don't want to copy someone else's ideas", one of the wrongest things you can ever think about. Imitation is as important as knowing the right scales over chords. Imitation doesn't make you a thief nor less original; it helps you grow musically. Imitation, combined with other concepts such as harmony, improvisation and arranging, will give you the tools to free your fingers and play whatever you feel like. I usually teach basic harmony to all my students. Many of them come to me telling "I want to be able to improvise over anything"; and so I teach them about harmony, improvisation concepts, to name a few, but they still seem to lack something in their playing. The answer is usually obvious; they simply need to learn licks and guitar solos. There is something interesting about learning someone else's playing, and it is the fact that understanding and analyzing what other musician did, helps you understand what you want to do. For this book, I have decided to write down 299 original guitar licks.

Scales are placed from "More Popular" to "Less Popular". Each chapter is connected to a backing track, which is named after the scale. The concept is easy; just choose a lick and play it over the chapter's backing track. You can pick as many licks as you want from the same chapter, and use them in no particular order. Even though each chapter has its own track to jam, you can use a different one by transposing the licks to the new key; transposition is specified in each section. All licks in this book are written in Standard Notation and Tablature; notation symbols are specified bellow.
