290 Longines Watch Co., Movement No. 5810653, Cal. 21.29, 154 x 153 x 56 mm, circa 1938 An extremely rare precision astronavigation chronometer with degree indicator, split seconds chronograph and 30h-power reserve indicator, so called “Siderograph” Case: mahogany showcase, aluminium, polished, knureld screws for hand setting, winding, inner turnable bezel, slide for balance stop device, pusher for split seconds chronograph. Dial: silvered, Arabic numerals, degree indicator, inner turnable bezel, signature: “Longines Aero-N. No. 5810653 Fab. Suisse”, blued leaf hands. Movm.: 2/3 plate movement, rhodium-plated, “fausses côtes” decoration, ground double hand tong for split seconds chronograph, indirect centre seconds, balance stop device, Glucydur screw balance, cam type fine adjusting device, Glucydur lever. The Longines Siderograph The Longines Siderograph was originally invented in 1938 to assist navigation in airplanes. The instrument measures Greenwich Sidereal or Mean Time in hour angles, minutes and minute arcs; its accuracy and precision make the Siderograph the ultimate in marine chronometry. It allows the navigator to operate at night as well as during the day and surpassed the Weems and Lindbergh systems for nocturnal navigation by far, because both systems relied heavily on radio time signals. The Siderographs were equipped with chronometer calibre 21.29, at the time the most accurate movement Longines possessed. The Longines SiderographThe Longines Siderograph was originally invented in 1938 to assist navigation in airplanes. A split seconds mechanism and an anti-magnetic beryllium pallet fork were added and the movement was fitted in heat-toughened aluminum case; this material was perfectly suited for aeronautic and maritime purposes because of its light, nonferrous nature.
