NEW MATERIALS AND OBSERVATIONS ABOUT THE PAINTEDTABLE CERAMICS FROM TWO MONASTERIES IN VELIKI PRESLAV
Totyu Totev (Shoumen)
(abstract)
In this article the author considers the painted table ceramics from twomonastery studios unearthed by him which belong to the Palace Monastery and tostudio 4 at the still unfinished archaeological excavations of the monastery aroundthe Round (Golden) church.
Albeit fragmented, the painted table vessels in question enable one to makeinteresting observations about their form and the diverse painted ornamental decoration
on their walls which include: arches, twisting branches, palmettes, rosettes, festoonswith pearls, with fishbone, volutes etc. The vegetative motives of the ornamentationof the table vessels are accompanied by hitherto almost unknown effigies of real andfantastic animals: griffins with eagle heads, winged lions, senmourves (dogs-birds),water birds, peacocks etc.
At the end of his study the author concludes that the ornamental decoration ofthe table ceramics of Veliki Preslav can be interpreted as the influence of jewelery, textiles, book miniatures and other materials and techniques of applied art. Some of thedepicted animals can be traced to similar images on Byzantine monuments which have
parallels in Abbasid art. Their appearance is due to the increased interest of theemperors of the Macedonian dynasty toward Muslim art and luxury.
