Teens work for smokesThe rising cost of cigarettes won’t deter a group of Nelson students despite many of them working part time jobs to pay for their habit.Nelson Weekly spoke with a group of teenage smokers who are either at high school or re-cently finished. All were girls and all started when they were still too young to buy tobacco. Most still are too young. They say they “don’t know” why they smoke but buy their tobacco at Nelson retailers who notoriously don’t ask for ID and if they don’t have enough money to buy a whole pack-et, will go halves with their friends, because they simply can’t go without their daily in-take of nicotine. Some even go to the effort of brushing their teeth to cover any lingering smell on their breath before visiting boyfriends who don’t know about their habit.

One Nelson College for Girls student tampered with her ID to make her age appear over 18 and others get parents, friends or older siblings to buy it or simply visit shops that don’t ask for ID.An announcement by the gov-ernment in last week’s budget that the price of cigarettes is set to rise by ten per cent every year for the next four didn’t even deter them. “I’ll keep smoking, I can’t stop,” says high school student Hannah Flem-ming, 17. Sirens try to smash derby foesThere were thrills and spills as some of the South Island’s feistiest women took to the track in front of a full house for the first ever tri-ple header hosted in Nelson. Though the Sirens fought a good

battle, it was the Dunedin Derby Gallow Lasses that took out the trophy in frong of 2000 people. “It was a little bit disappointing that we didn’t win for our home crowd, but we’re still new,” says Siren Tara

teachers. They say quitting is tough because family members and most of their friends also smoke. But they admit it is “disgusting”.The Cancer Society hopes the price hikes will make it harder for young people like these girls to buy tobacco. “Typically tobacco companies target young people, as their regular cus-tomers die off at a rate of 5000 a year. This vulnerable group is less likely to have disposable income so higher prices will make them less likely to start and more likely to quit smok-ing,” says the tobacco control advisor

for the Cancer Society, Skye Kimura.Research by HSC – an anti-smok-ing organisation – shows the Nel-son smokers are part of a shrinking group of young people taking up the habit, and its chief executive Iain Pot-ter hopes last week’s announcement will help speed up the decline.Hannah, who has been a smoker for three years, agrees that making it il-legal will be a good thing but it will be unlikely to stop her. “I think it’s a great idea that we will be smoke free, because smoking is disgusting. But if I was still smoking then I would probably buy them on the black mar-ket.”

Evey McCauliffe, Todd Valley.

“My husband! I don’t know what makes him so funny, but he says I’m his best audience.”

Matt Reid, Tahuna.

“Probably my workmates. The group that we have; it’s prob-ably the funniest times of my life.”

Gina Murray, Atawhai.

“The funniest person I know is my friend Kat. She is a feel-good person, whenever I see her she puts a smile on my face.”

Neil Williamson, Nelson.

“A guy called Smithy. I work with him. He’s a pain in the arse. Always got a bit of hu-mour, he’s just funny.”

to full widthRocks Rd has been reopened to its full width for the first time in almost six months, after falling rocks and slips forced it to close. The job to repair the most visible disruption re-maining from last December’s freak rainfall was mostly finished this week, allowing traffic and cyclists to once again use the road properly.Since late December traffic has had to squeeze between road cones and shipping containers holding rubble from the road. Cyclists were ei-ther forced from the road or braved a very nar-row space to travel on.NZTA operations manager Mark Owen says the current phase of work has been completed on time and within budget, meaning an end to dis-ruption to road users. “However, there will still be a construction site

in the middle section of the cliff, while the final section of mesh and concrete spray is completed, and we ask motorists and cyclists to continue to take care.“We also need to repair the road surface before we can reopen the cycle lane, and these will be carried out at night. That way we don’t disrupt motorists during the day when it’s much busier.”Mark says the next phase of work on the Rocks Rd cliff is currently being investigated and it is likely to involve soil nailing and rockfall netting. This work is expected to be completed later this year, and it will not restrict the road width dur-ing the day, meaning the effects on motorists will be minimal.Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says it’s great to have full use of the road again.

Job website aims for impact in NelsonWhen Josh Dean moved to Nelson earlier this month he wasn’t looking for a job, but he’s quite happy to help locals find one.Josh, along with two of his friends, started the website Jobit in March. It launched in Invercargill when its mayor Tim Shadbolt completed the first job through the site, mowing lawns for $1.It has since taken off with already hundreds of people finding work through it.The website works like a re-verse auction. People post work they want done and us-ers then tender for the job.

“It’s sort of like the reverse to TradeMe. You post a job like having your gardening done or plumbing fixed and people then bid to get the work. You don’t have to take the low-est bid because that person may not have the skills you’re looking for. But it’s a great way for people to find work and a great way for people to get jobs done,” says Josh.He hopes Jobit will become the next TradeMe, so it re-mains totally free. The site works nationwide and Josh says he is hoping it will enjoy similar popularity in Nelson as it has in Southland.

No pokie money for football bidNelson will officially launch its bid to play na-tional league football this week, and will at-tempt to buck the trend of relying on money from pokie machines to get there. The Top of the South bid was first reported in the Nelson Weekly and if successful will give the region its third professional sports team, after the Tasman Makos and Nelson Giants.Consortium leader Aldo Miccio says the group is attempting raise enough money – around $200,000 – without having to apply to gaming trusts, which collect their money

from pokie machines. “We want to show that it is possible to do it without pokie money.”The group says it also does not want to use any of the current funding streams for local football clubs and organisations. The consortium is made of up local football administrators, business people, lawyers and accountants and Aldo says the bid will offi-cially be sent either Wednesday or Thursday this week. “We already have around $100,000 pledged in either cash, or in like, and we have had some really positive meetings with local

companies. Now we need to move to the next level and start involving the community in some of the fundraising.”Aldo says he would like to hear of any ideas from people about how they can fundraise and help get a Nelson team in the ASB Pre-miership. All flights and accommodation are covered by the competition’s major sponsors and players do not get paid so the further $100,000 is for operational costs. To get in touch about fundraising ideas, email Aldo at [email protected].

Karen Clark isn't sure how many books they have had donated for this years Found-ers Book Fair but she reckons there is at least two for every Nelsonian."Surely we'd be getting close to 200,000," she says. The annual book fair opens on Queens Birthday weekend and lasts for the entire week. This year, unable to squeeze into the Energy Centre, the fair has ex-panded to also take up the Gra-nary, where it will house chil-dren's books, DVDs, CDs and even a decent number of vinyl records.Money raised from the fair goes back into projects at the park with last year's total of more than $100,000 being used for upgrades at the Granary, in-cluding a new kitchen.Karen says the 12 volunteers that organise the fair have been busy sorting through a huge number of books which have

been donated by members of the public."We have more books than any other year and the quality is also up which is really pleas-ing."

One of the highlights is an encyclopedia set from 1880, which is going for $10. The fair starts this Saturday from 10am and runs until June 10.

Another month is nearing it’s end, and with all the winter sports in full swing I enjoy seeing many of Nelson’s youth on Saturdays heading to our cafes for a warming hot chocolate after a full-on morning playing sport. Big smiles from all, whether the teams have been victorious in winning or successful in playing together as a team. I enjoy overhearing some of the stories of superb goals being scored and the perfect tackle with mud smeared over the uniforms being the trophy!Feeling the warm ambience as you walk through the doors of Columbus Café, in the heart of Fashion Island, you will be greeted by Trudi and Ian Brassfield. Choosing to sit in the courtyard surrounded by phoenix palms or inside at either your café style table and chairs or to relax in chocolate leather tub chairs, you can view the vast array of savoury and sweet options like paninis, wraps, quiches, pastries, cakes and slices, enticing you from the glass display unit or choose from the menu for the kitchen to prepare. At Columbus Café, they ensure that the coffees are always freshly roasted, freshly ground and freshly brewed, and you can ensure that you will be served by experienced, friendly and knowledgeable staff who enjoy sharing the enjoyment of great coffee and food in a relaxing environment.Have a fantastic week, and I look forward to seeing you at our Fashion Island.

Nelson comedian Guy Williams has scooped the industry’s most acclaimed ac-colade – the Billy T Award.Guy, best known for his role on TV3’s The Jono Project, shot to fame when he controversially fooled his way into a fake pro-whaling interview with Paul Henry on TVNZ’s Breakfast.Guy was handed the prestigious yellow towel during the final show of the New Zealand International Comedy Festival, Last Laughs.

“It’s a very cost effective way to save money on trophies. I’m not sure what I’ll do with it yet. I might get it framed or I might just use it to dry my hands,” he says.Guy fought off stiff competition to win the award, including fel-low nominees Tom Furniss, Te-vita Manukia and TJ McDon-ald, but he was most relieved to beat his girlfriend Rose Matafeo who was also up for the award. “She would have rubbed it in my face if she had won.

But the Billy T has been really weak over the past couple of years and this year it was a lot stronger, so I was really lucky to win.”Guy also takes home a $2500 cash prize and will make a guest appearance on panel comedy show 7 Days next month. The Billy T Award was formed back in 1997 by the New Zea-land Comedy Trust, in honour

of one of the country’s greatest comedians, the late Billy T James. The award is to not

only recognise outstanding potential but to help foster and encourage New Zealand comedic talent.Past winners of the Billy T Award include; Paul Ego, Ben Hurley, Steve Wrigley and Dai Henwood. Rhys Darby has been a past nominee but never won the award. “It was something I always dreamed about doing and winning. The fact I did it in my first try is almost a relief.”Guy is currently working on a new format-ted version of The Jono Project. He hopes to bring his comedy show to Nelson later in the year.

Local group donates to hospitalThe Manchester Unity Friendly Society has made a “generous” donation to help Nelson Dis-trict Nurses care for patients in the community.A hand-held pulse oximeter, worth around $1000, will help nurses monitor the treatment of oxygen therapy patients.

The donation is part of Man-chester Unity’s community outreach program.“Quite a few of our members have used district nursing, so if it’s not some members it’s ei-ther family of friends who will benefit from it,” says Julie Tom-linson of Manchester Unity.

The device is used to find out patients’ levels of oxygen satu-ration and help determine the effectiveness of the treatment they are undergoing.“It’s a very generous dona-tion; it’s wonderful,” says Mary Daubney of the District Nurs-ing Service.

When Tokowha Tu Huia moved into his new home he says the birds would fly through his lounge, the rats didn’t like having to share their home with a new stranger and if there was a strong wind he would rush to open a window so the wind could blow through the historic Teal Val-ley cottage and not knock it over.Naturally, it didn’t take long before he thought about pulling it down and starting from scratch. But then it spoke to him. Af-ter 167 years, Westley Cottage wasn’t ready to say goodbye. “It told me it didn’t want to die. It wasn’t ready to go, so I said I would give it 100 more years of life and started to think about renovating it.”The first two contractors told him to for-get it, it was too far gone. The next said it would cost a small fortune but finally Tokowha found a contractor who would restore the house as close as possible to its original state.Tokowha says rebuilding it has been im-portant because of its claimed history. The Teal Valley Cottage is apparently the oldest cottage still lived in in the South Island. It has a history of artisans, hippies and pio-neers. It was owned for four generations by the Westley family until the 1960s when

Christopher Vine and his family bought it and the 8 hectares that came with it. Chris-topher, an architect from London, built a new home for his family. The cottage was used for storage. But when his marriage ended Christopher moved into the cottage and began adding “wings” to it, including a morning room and an afternoon room. For a brief period a group of hippies lived on Christopher’s land.Tokowha says when he first bought the place 18 months ago it was about finding somewhere to escape for several months of the year. He found that but also found challenges he wasn’t expecting, including rotting walls and roof. The renovation took seven months and last winter was spent without a fire, mak-ing for some rather chilly mornings. The rebuild is not to his-toric standard and Tokowha makes no apology for that. He says the building wouldn’t still be standing if those restrictions were imposed. “We couldn’t, most of the wood was rotten, the walls weren’t there. We couldn’t keep it exactly the way it was but we’ve done our best to get it as close as possible and added

a few modern features.”Those modern features include a new kitchen, fire, bathroom, under floor heat-ing and front porch. The result is a beauti-ful home says Tokowha. “I’ve done what I said I would and given this home another 100 years of life. It’s a

beautiful cottage.”He says he is now putting the cottage on the market as he travels most the year, lecturing to European and American uni-versities about Maori culture and the rela-tionship between indigenous people and western society.

Phone scammers can target anyone at any time – just ask the Richmond Community Police who had one call them by mistake this month.Community constable Glen Lloyd Jones had just got off the phone to a lady reporting a phone scam when his phone rang again. This time it was an overseas call requesting to speak to the “main user” of his computer. “I kept tell-ing them ‘you do realize you’ve called the po-lice don’t you?’ But he just wanted to talk to my main repairer,” he says.Glen eventually hung up on the phone scammer but says the experience shows they can target anyone at random. The phone scammers are believed to be wanting credit card details from the victims, but Glen says there is absolutely no reason whatsoever that anyone would call you directly demanding this. “They’re really pushy and they make peo-ple think they have to give their card over. It’s just the way they’re talking to you.”It is believed that the various phone scammers have strong Spanish or Indian accents.Phone scammers are not a new thing and in the past have used techniques pretending the re-ceiver had won a competition. “We get it a lot. More people are coming forward and reporting it but I think that’s just because word is getting around.”Because the phone scammers are based over-seas, it is “near impossible” to investigate as there is different jurisdiction in a foreign coun-try. It is up to police to make people aware of such scams and Glen says the most important thing to remember is never give out your card details. If you do get a phone call from a phone scammer, just hang up. “Rule number one is you should never give your card details out.”

Senior constable Dave Colville was bemused when the Richmond Community Police sta-tion received a call from a phone scammer last week. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Keep your child happy and safe with swimming lessons at Riverside. The enjoyable classes are run by a team of qualified and friendly instructors who make swimming a fun experience while teaching children how to swim and stay safe. The drowning rate in New Zealand is high, especially for toddlers, and with Nelson being on the coast it’s important that children are taught and encouraged to swim all year round. Contrary to popular belief, swimming during the winter raises children’s immunity and makes them stronger, while keeping them fit and healthy. It’s also important to continue to develop the skill throughout the year and as they grow older. Keta Everett has been running the SwimMagic swim school at Riverside for over a year, and in that time the programme has grown and students have continued to improve dramatically through the dedication of the high calibre of instructors. All age groups are welcome from six months to adults, and the small group size ensures a rapid improvement in swimming skills. Enrolments are being taken for the holiday intensive programme, or enquire about swimming programmes for term three.

SAY NO TO LEAKY BUILDINGS

Leaky homes are a thing of the past with a revo-lutionary new extruded aluminium window and door flashing system designed, fabricated, in-stalled and warranted by Flashman. The Flash-man window and door flashing system exceeds NZ Building Code re-quirements offering a top of the line, good looking window flashing system. Flashman is fast becoming the most repu-table flashing system for aluminium windows and doors, specified for government buildings, high rise towers, schools, Housing NZ, rest homes and commercial premises throughout NZ.The Flashman system was introduced to Nelson less than a year ago by experienced local builder Russell Bruce. With more than 15 years in the trade and having built several houses that won Master Builders House of the Year awards, Rus-sell had been exploring ways of providing the best quality building components for his valued clients. When introduced to the Flashman sys-tem, Mr Bruce said “I was so impressed with this highly innovative solution to a major ongoing building problem that I purchased the Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough regional Flashman dis-tributorship nine months ago. To date we have installed the Flashman system in 25 new homes in the region.”A startling 50% of leaks in leaky homes are lo-cated at window or door cladding junctions. The main reason is due to the introduction of sealant smeared between the cladding and the alumini-um window rather than installing metal flashing as was good trade practice of the past. Sealant is

not designed or warranted by the manufactur-ers to be smeared between cladding and alu-minium windows. The results have been dis-astrous. Sadly says Mr Bruce, “Sealant is still the most common flashing method and is still the “minimum standard” in the NZ Building Code. Experts estimate that the nationwide cost of weathertightness disaster known as the leaky home syndrome at $23 billion.”Flashman provides 15 year product warranty and a 10 year Installation Warranty as well as a producer statement for the council. Mainte-nance is minimal unlike sealant which must be checked 6 monthly to ensure against failure. Lack of maintenance voids the cladding war-ranties.The powder coated aluminium Flashings ar-rives at the factory in Wakatu Estate where it is precision cut to fit the exact window or door size then installed only by the authorised re-gional Flashman distributor who understands the importance of window and door flashings. The installation process takes no more than 6-8 hours and actually speeds up the building process because the flashings are installed as soon as the windows/doors are in place.

Ph 544 4394 SAY NO TO LEAKY BUILDINGS

Flashman reduces the builder’s cost of order-ing, measuring, supplying, fitting, plastering and painting that are necessary with any flashing sys-tem; making Flashman either highly cost com-petitive or cheaper than common but inferior sealant reliant system. With plastering systems the so called PVC “flash-ings” (actually mouldings to allow screed lines for the even application of the plaster) are buried below the plaster making it impossible for any water that penetrates the paint system to escape. The designers of the Flashman system say this is against every known principle of flashing prac-tice. Flashings are created at a junction where wa-ter will inevitably penetrate. Flashings purpose-fully allow water penetration but are designed to allow that water to escape. Monolithic (seamless look) plaster systems do not achieve this basic function of allowing water to escape, yet these paint and sealant reliant methods still exist and appear in the NZ Building Code.

The Flashman sill also supports heavy double glazed units preventing possible leaks at the mitre joins which occur if the window or door has been installed without solid support. The patented Flashman system is unique to NZ and has no international rival or competitor and has patents pending internationally. The system has been tested by BRANZ to withstand hur-ricane grade winds of 232 kph. You can be sure that any local buildings fitted with the Flashman system will remain weathertight. For the first time since the introduction of alu-minium joinery in NZ approx 40 years ago, there is now a robust, good looking, long term com-plete flashing system, specifically designed and BRANZ Appraised to overcome the problematic aluminium joinery to cladding junction. The Flashman authorised regional distributor for Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough regions is located at 8b Kotua Place in the Wakatu Estate, Stoke.

Insist on “Quality and Best Practice” by specifying the Flashman Window and Door Flashing System on your

next home or commercial project. Contact Production Manager Tom Bruce at Flashman Nelson, 544 4394.

The installation process takes no more than 6-8 hours and actually speeds up the building process because the flashings are installed as soon as the windows/doors are in place.

I found comments made by local healthcare provider Dr Phil Townsend about the Maori Party bill that proposes to hand control of gam-ing machines to local councils, a bit ironic and a tad hypocritical. The irony in Dr Townsend’s call for a more democratic process is to enable a change in law that would deny people rights and opportunities. Like most abolitionists Dr Townsend clearly believes that he knows what is good for all and democracy doesn’t extend to those who disagree. The whiff of hypocrisy is that Dr Townsend and his cohort derive almost all of their income from the proceeds of gambling. This is the same ‘dirty money’ he criticises and demonises charities and community groups for utilising. If the highly dubious claim that 40 per cent of the money generated from the gaming in-dustry is ‘dirty money’ perhaps he needs to con-sider that’s about what the Government takes in tax, duties and levies, including Dr Townsends bit, before it even gets to the community. I have a great deal of respect for Dr Townsend’s com-mitment to the treatment of problem gamblers but he should stay out of politics. Attempting to impose morality by way of legislation is no more acceptable than doing it by colonialism or impe-rialism. Take care your behaviour might be next.

Martin Cheer, Chief Executive, Pub Charity.

Shame on Nelson soccer and the others for even taking pokie money let alone fighting to keep it. Where are your morals? And what kind of mes-sage does this give kids? To support your hobby and keep you fit and active you're exploiting gambling addicts. Fundraising is about working for the money and maybe finding appropriate business sponsors, not holding out your greedy hands and exploiting. These people are supposed to be leaders and set-ting an example to our kids. Instead they choose to show them it is okay to turn a blind eye and just look after one's own interests.

Tim Monck-Mason,Nelson.

Nelson is at a crossroad, in terms of turning away from the constant negative comments from the habitual complainers and whingers. We, as a community, have proved we have so much going for this city. We need to galvanise belief in ourselves and get behind our successes and drive this region forward. There are so many groups and organisations doing so well for this region. It’s about attracting investment, families and jobs. At the council we are playing our part. Over the last 18 months we have successfully hosted rugby world cup matches, maintained levels of core services, progressed heart of Nelson upgrades, delivered the lowest rate rise in 20 years, com-pleted Dun Mountainbike Park, opened Saxton Cricket Pavilion, helped fund the Theatre Royal upgrade, coped admirably with a 1 in a 100 year storm event, and put on some great festivals. We have planned in our 2015 vision for so much more. Maitai and Rocks Rd walkways, Ruther-ford Park development including Trafalgar Park east stand, host under 20 FIFA football world cup, Saxton Velodrome a viable downtowns arts and theatre precinct, Brook Sanctuary fence and of course all important focus on core services, all achieved with under a five per cent rate rise and half the debt of most other councils. Sure it hasn’t all been smooth sailing but we sure as heck are fixing those issues so let’s all get on with business by ignoring these constant nega-tive naysayers who are trying to hold this region back.

Aldo Miccio,Mayor of Nelson.

There has been recent coverage about advice giv-en by the former CEO Mr [Keith] Marshall to the council in respect to the Maori ward process. My own reported comments on this matter may have been misinterpreted to imply that I felt that the CEO provided the council with poor advice. This was not the case and I am sorry if that message was conveyed. It is worth noting that the subse-quent independent legal opinion supported Mr Marshall’s advice to the council. Even so, I clearly do not agree with the decision and approach tak-en by the council over this matter, but it would be wrong to point any finger at Mr Marshall.

Paul Matheson, Nelson City councillor.

Got a Sport Story?

Nelson College for Girls coach, Kathryn Orange says her players had a fantastic warmup and were totally focussed on the game in hand when they met Rival Cougars in the Grade 1 game that determined which team would gain promotion to the elite grade.Rival, however, made the bet-ter start – scoring four of the first five goals. However, once the college team settled they looked a better unit. Ruth Swaney was outstanding through the mid court, she had punch and linked well to put in a number of precision feeds to shooters Madi Billens and Rosa Edwards.Nelson College had their noses in front 7 – 5 at the first break.Ellie Bell was introduced at goal attack and struck up an immediate understanding with Madi and they increased the lead when they outscored their opposites 10 -5, with a perfect scoring record. Rival had the same amount of attempts, however could only manage a 50 per cent conversion rate. Goal defence, Rosie Bywater was in outstanding form when she pulled in four well time in-tercepts and she pressured the Rival shooters. Rosie was also strong through court and was a competent ball carrier.Nelson was still very much in control when, after three quarters it had ex-tended its lead to 28 – 19. Goal shoot,

Shevaun Collier made a welcome re-turn after injury to combine nicely with Rosa Edwards who re-entered after half

time.Rival left the best until last when it outscored Nelson Col-lege 11 – 7, courtesy of some great shooting by Renee Bouiz-ard. Although Renee had

shouldered the bulk of the shooting in the first 30 minutes, she increased her work rate even more when she went out to goal attack.Rival coach, Diane Whittal said she was a little disappointed with the result, however she believed Nelson wanted the game more. Although beaten she thought her girls “came right” and with an extra period may have gotten over the line.

Renee came in for praise from her coach, while Kim Loftus worked hard at goal keep to deny the second oppor-tunity.

Stoke’s division one team faded away in the last 20 minutes to hand Central a one point win in the Tasman Trophy at Green-meadows on Saturday. Although disappointed with the 23-22 re-sult, the Stoke team showed real dogged-ness after playing a midweek game against Waimea and then backing it up against a team that had the benefit of fresh legs have had the bye the week prior. Stoke created enough scoring opportunities to win the game with ease, but again funda-mental errors proved the undoing. Stoke opened the scoring with a well struck penalty to Chad Lowrie, who again put on a fantastic goal kicking display. Stoke was pleased to welcome back Shawn Begg and Leon Guerin from the USA. Shawn provided some assertive direction to the team, and as a result, created the oppor-tunity for Patrick Tafifli-Reid to ghost in for the first try, taking Stoke out to a 10 point lead. Central hit back with a try after a well-constructed counterattack and also added a penalty before Chad struck twice again to take Stoke out to a 16-8 halftime lead. With ten minutes to play Stoke had a handy 22-11 lead, but Central applied the pressure through its forwards and capi-talised on infringements to score two late tries and ultimately take the game. The ev-ergreen Sonny Alesana, a former Nelson Bays front rower, showed all his experi-ence holding up one corner of the scrum approaching the game with youthful en-thusiasm. Stoke is looking forward to its next match up with Nelson this weekend.

The Stoke faithful were treated to a superb display of running rugby by their wom-ens’ team at Greenmeadows on Saturday, where they won 55-5 over Marist. The backs were in sublime form, con-trolled expertly by first five-eighths Jenna Eathorne who put her outsides into space at every opportunity. This gave youngsters Courtney Robinson and Alysha Borlase room to move, and it was Alysha who ran in unopposed in the 32nd minute after selling a crowd-thrill-ing dummy an All Blacks winger would be proud of. Robinson was showing her defensive prowess also, and made several crucial tackles when Marist looked threatening. The Stoke forwards worked hard up front where the experienced hands led the way, providing the foundation for the backs to cut loose from long range. Dynamic co-captain Angela Cotton earned player of the match honours with a four try haul, while Robinson was easily the pick of the backs.

Stoke division two fell to the fate of many previous teams, failing to drive away from Collingwood with a win. Collingwood scored two first half tries before Stoke came out firing in the sec-ond half to tie the scores thanks to a Sam Dempster try and a conversion and pen-alty goal to Jacob Curtis. The home side found another gear though and powered on to win the game 29-10.Stoke will host the other Golden Bay team, Takaka, this Saturday at Greenmeadows.

Nelson’s Kartsport drivers will be tearing up the track over the week-end, as the action of the Sunbelt Championship hits the region for the 27th year. Drivers from all over the South Island converge in Nelson and

Coming Soon

The snapper have now moved north and are around D’urville Island with a few stragglers still around Okiwi Bay and Delaware Bay. Un-fortunately the spikey dogs have also moved into the neighbourhood and taken up residence, along with their partners in crime, the razor gang. If your gear can survive these un-wanted pests, the Sounds are start-ing to fish really well with some excellent big winter snapper being landed. There have been some good reports of fat gurnard being landed in Tas-man Bay out on the sand and ka-hawai are still in massive numbers inside the cut and right along the bay to D’urville Island. Kingfish will now be in Stephens’ Passage but make sure you are well prepared with your gear to take on these beasts of the sea. Get into your lo-cal tackle shop and spend as much money as you can afford to make sure your gear will enable you to land these very powerful fish. In our next article we will go into what type of rods, reels and rigs are best for fishing this area. The spat farms have slowed down now and will need to wait until next season when the water starts to warm up again.Don’t forget, it’s now only 7 weeks until the scallop season opens so start getting your gear sorted now. Also looking ahead at the calendar it shows the

school holidays coming up and win-ter time can be a great time to get the kids out fishing. Even though the weather is colder it is generally much more settled with little wind and slight seas and can be a great source of entertainment. Taking kids fishing doesn’t necessarily re-quire a boat and can be done from a wharf or beach. It can be for as little or as long as you like depending on your patience and keeping the kids occupied.Kids usually aren’t too worried if they don’t catch anything but en-joy the process of trying to catch a fish. Whatever the outcome of a day’s fishing it always comes with plenty of laughs, can cost you noth-ing but provide stories and pictures that kids will always treasure. Give it a go you might be pleasantly sur-prised, if you’ve never fished with kids before, at how excited they get at the prospect of catching a fish.
