of Banks Board Bureau

With a view to improving the governance of Public Sector Banks (PSBs), the Government had decided to set up an autonomous Banks Board Bureau.

The Bureau will recommend the selection of heads - Public Sector Banks and Financial Institutions and help Banks in developing strategies and capital raising plans.

Now, the Government has announced the constitution of Banks Board Bureau which will have three ex-officio members and three expert members in addition to the Chairman. All the Members and Chairman will be part time.

Affairs elected as the Chairperson of the Governing Council of

IFAD

Shri Dinesh Sharma, Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance and India’s Governor to the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), Rome was unanimously elected as the Chairperson of the Governing Council of IFAD for a period of two years in its 39th Session held in Rome, Italy on 17th and 18th February, 2016.

IFAD was set-up in 1977 as the 13th Specialised Agency of the United Nations and works towards removing poverty and hunger in rural areas all over the world.

India is a founder member of IFAD and a key contributor among the member countries.

IFAD is managed by the two main governing bodies i.e. the Governing Council and the Executive Board. The Governing Council is the highest decision making body and consists of 176 member countries.

Stan Wawrinka claims Dubai Tennis Championship crown

World number four Stan Wawrinka overcame the spirited challenge of Marcos Baghdatis to win the Dubai Tennis Championship.

The Swiss triumphed 6-4 7-6 (15-13) for his ninth straight final win and his second title of the season.

The French Open champion, 30, saved five set points in a tense tie-break and won when a Baghdatis return went wide on a fourth match point.

It was Wawrinka's first time playing the tournament in eight years.

He had reached the final when Nick Kyrgios retired from their semi-final with a back injury.

Resul Pookutty becomes first Asian to win Golden Reel Award

Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty has made the country proud by becoming the first Asian to win the award for best sound for documentary “India’s Daughter” at the coveted Motion Picture Sound Editors’ 63rd annual Golden Reel Awards.

Pookutty, 44, who attended the awards ceremony here, took to Twitter to share his excitement about winning the honour for British documentary maker Leslee Udwin-directed “India’s Daughter”, made on the Delhi gangrape incident of December 2012, which is banned in India.

The Oscar-winning sound engineer said that he was the first Asian to win the coveted award at the 63rd Golden Reel Award from the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ (MPSE) of US for best sound.

Rozle Prezelj elected Chairman of IAAF Athletes’ Commission

Slovenian high-jumper Rozle Prezelj was elected the Chairman of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Athletes' Commission in Monaco.

Prezelj took over as Chairman of the commission from Frank Fredericks with immediate effect.

Born on 26 September 1979, Prezelj represented Slovenia at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics.

His best result was at the 2008 Olympics where he finished 12th in high jump.

China Announces Plans To Launch Second Space Lab Tiangong-

2

China will send its second orbiting space lab Tiangong-2 into space in the third quarter of

this year

As part of the country's space lab program, China also plans to launch the Shenzhou-11 spacecraft, which will carry two astronauts on board, in the fourth quarter of this year to dock with Tiangong-2, according to the program's spokesperson.

China aims to have a permanent, manned and functional space station by 2022.

Hashim Thaci elected as President of Kosovo

Foreign Minister Hashim Thaci was elected as president of Kosovo by the Members of Parliament amid the protests.

Hashim Thaci was a guerrilla leader during a conflict that led to Kosovo, a mainly ethnic Albanian province declaring independence from Serbia.

He had also served as prime minister fell out with many opposition groups after helping to negotiate with Serbia a deal that gave more autonomy to minority Serbs of Kosovo.

Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008. It has been recognised by the US and many EU countries.

This self-declared independence was not recognized by Serbia and many other countries around the world.

Kosovo and Serbia reached a landmark agreement to normalise their relations in April 2013.

Delhi airport bags three international awards

Indira Gandhi International Airport - IGIA has received three international awards, including for best airport by size in the Asia Pacific region.

These awards have been given by the Airports Council International - ACI for 2015.

Delhi airport has retained the world's number one position for the second consecutive year in 25 to 40 Million Passengers Per Annum category.

The two other awards are for best airport by size & region Asia Pacific and second best airport by region.

China plans to conduct more than 20 satellite launch missions in 2016, which positions China to exceed launches by the US,

China launched the first of a new generation of navigation satellites for its BeiDou navigation system in 2015.

The next of these satellites is set to be launched this year.

Road named after Satyajit Ray Dharani in Kolkata

South Kolkata's Lee Road will be renamed Satyajit Ray Dharani after the legendary film director, who lived in the vicinity, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced.

Ray resided close to Lee Road on Bishop Lefroy Road for years till his death in 1992, and many of his masterpieces were planned and conceived from this house.

Public Provident Fund withdrawal exempted from tax: Govt

Government made it clear that Public Provident Fund will not be taxed on withdrawal. Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said in a statement that only the interest that accrues on contributions to Employee Provident Fund made after 1st of April this year will be taxed while principal will continue to remain tax exempt. Mr Adhia elaborated that 40 percent of the interest accrued on contributions made after 1st April will be tax exempted and remaining 60 percent will be taxed.

The Revenue Secretary also clarified that this is not a revenue mobilisation exercise and this 60 percent will also be tax exempted if it is invested in a pension annuity scheme.

Former chief operating officer of SpiceJet Ltd Sanjiv Kapoor has joined TATA SIA Airlines-run full service airline Vistara as its new chief strategy and commercial officer.

Kapoor will succeed Giam Ming Toh, chief commercial officer, Vistara. Giam Ming will return to Singapore Airlines on completion of his deputation with Vistara.

Oscar-Winning Actor George Kennedy Dies at 91

George Kennedy, who won an Academy Award for his bruising performance in "Cool Hand Luke" and later starred in the goofy "Naked Gun" franchise," died in Idaho. He was 91.

Kennedy, who stood nearly 6½ feet tall, was a World War II veteran who broke into acting, in part, through military dramas and TV Westerns. In 1967, he appeared in the Oscar-winning World War II film "The Dirty Dozen."

Microsoft's co-founder Bill Gates continued his reign as the world's richest person with a net worth of $75 billion, according to Forbes' annual ranking of billionaires, with Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani leading the pack of 84 Indian billionaires in 2016. Forbes said Ambani, 58, has retained his position as India's richest person despite shares of his oil and gas giant Reliance Industries taking a hit due to lower oil prices.

He is ranked 36th on the list with a net worth of $20.6 billion.

IFC launches Masala Bonds to tap Japanese households

International Finance Corporation (IFC) launched its first Uridashi Masala Bonds (Japanese bonds) to mobilise Rs 30 crore from Japanese retail investors.

The proceeds will be used for promoting private sector development in India, IFC said.

The bonds will be settled in yen and each bond is denominated at Rs 1, 00,000, the IFC said, adding that the bonds will be issued on March 30, 2016 and mature on March 29, 2019 with an annual payout of 5.36 per cent.

Masala Bonds are rupee-denominated instruments sold only to offshore investors, while Uridashi bonds are sold to Japanese household investors.

India has been ranked at the 90th place in a list of 126 countries compiled by World Economic Forum (WEF) on the basis of their ability to deliver secure, affordable and sustainable energy, which was topped by Switzerland.

Martin Crowe: Ex-New Zealand captain dies of cancer at 53

Former New Zealand cricket captain Martin Crowe died after a long battle with cancer. He was 53.

Widely regarded as New Zealand's finest batsman, Crowe played 77 Tests from 1982-1995 and scored 5,444 runs at an average of 45.36.

The elegant right-hander also scored 4,704 runs at an average of 38.55 in One-Day Internationals. Crowe was initially diagnosed with follicular lymphoma in 2012 but the disease went into remission.

Poet Dr Bhagwati Lal Vyas to be awarded Bihari Puraskar

Eminent poet Dr Bhagwati Lal Vyas has been chosen for the 2015 Bihari Puraskar for his anthology of Rajasthani poems 'Katha Sun Aawe Hai Sabad'.

A recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award, Dr Vyas has highlighted the increasing tendencies of commercialization and degradation of human values through his poetry.

IMF projects 7.3% GDP growth rate for India this fiscal

The International Monetary Fund has projected a robust growth rate of 7.3 per cent for the country this fiscal, picking up to 7.5 per cent next year.

The agency's protections are lower than the government's estimate of 7.6 per cent growth in 2015-16 while Reserve Bank sees economy expanding by 7.4 per cent this fiscal.

Kerala begins air ambulance facility In a first of its kind initiative, Kerala government has launched an air ambulance to be

used exclusively for speed in organ transplant.

The brand new six-seater ambulance is owned by the state-owned Rajiv Gandhi Academy for Aviation Technology, Thiruvananthapuram that imparts training to commercial pilot. Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy formally launched the air ambulance in Thiruvananthapuram.

World Wildlife Day observed

World Wildlife Day was observed on 3 March 2016 across the world. 2016 theme is “The future of wildlife is in our hands”, with African and Asian elephants being the main focus of global campaigns.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at its 68th session held on 20 December 2013 decided to proclaim 3 March as World Wildlife Day.

Five Indian women among Forbes World’s Billionaires List Five Indian women have made it to the Forbes list of world’s richest people in the world,

which saw 190 women billionaires – a little over 10 per cent of the total count.

Among the Indian women on the list Savitri Jindal and family was ranked at the 453rd place on the list with a net worth of USD 3.5 billion.

Indu Jain who chairs media conglomerate Bennett, Coleman & Co, was placed at the 549 rank globally. Her net worth stood at USD 3.1 billion.

Meanwhile, low profile heiress Leena Tewari debuted on the billionaires list. She chairs and owns privately held Indian generics maker USV, known for its drugs for diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, among much else. Leena Tiwari was placed at 1067 position with a net wealth of USD 1.7 billion.

Vinod Gupta ranked 1577 with assets of USD 1.1 billion, is the wife of Qimat Rai Gupta, who died in November 2014. She inherited her husband’s shares in electrical firm Havells India, though she doesn’t hold an executive or board position.

Globally, the grand dame of L’Oréal, Liliane Bettencourt and her children were ranked at the top among the richest women in the world. She was placed at the 11th position with a net worth of USD 36.1 billion

Eric Schmidt of Alphabet to head Pentagon's innovation board Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Alphabet the parent company of Google has been

picked by Pentagon to head a new advisory board on defence innovation.

Schmidt will be the chairman of the first Department of Defense Innovation Advisory Board and will work with Carter to select up to 12 members of the board.

Emirates completes world's longest non-stop scheduled commercial flight

An Emirates Airbus A380 jet has made what is believed to be the world's longest non-stop scheduled commercial flight by distance.

The plane had covered a distance of about 14,200 kilometres when it touched down in Auckland in New Zealand.

It took around the 17 hours and 15 minutes mark, although the return could be a few minutes longer. The new non-stop Emirates route between Auckland and Dubai reportedly reduces the current travel time by three hours.

PepsiCo inks sponsorship pact with BCCI

PepsiCo has inked a four-year ground sponsorship agreement with the Board of Control

for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The four-year ground sponsorship deal is for all domestic and international matches played by team India (except IPL). The company will be the official refreshment partner, official snacks partner and official sports drink partner with its brand Gatorade.

Last year, PepsiCo had pulled out of the title sponsorship deal for the Indian Premier League.
