30th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
28th/29th October 2017 – YEAR A
Hanging In There Do you ever wonder if Jesus ever thought, “This is all too much”; “When are things going to go my way, for a change?”: “what is the thanks I get for all this preaching and healing and feeding the multitudes?” I suppose if he was truly human, like the rest of us, it might have crossed his mind once or twice. In fact, it would be rather comforting to think that even Jesus occasionally counted the cost of his service of others. But in those moments of self-doubt or low energy for the task, what kept him going? What made him come back for more of the same again and again? The only answer I can think of is commitment to the cause and perseverance in the
face of unrealistic expectations.
It has been said that perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did. The truth is that perseverance, that necessary trait of a healthy spiritual life is never easy, which is why so many people find it difficult to persevere with the practice of
their faith when it appears at times to be just hard work.
While it seems to be commonly found in athletes and saints, perseverance is not always virtuous, particularly when it presents as stubbornness or pigheadedness. Synonyms of perseverance include endurance, steadfastness, constancy and stability. But it would be wrong to equate perseverance with merely staying in one place or sticking to one thing. We all know of people who have stayed in unfulfilling jobs or relationships, even when they were offered something better, simply because they lacked the courage to change. This is not the life-giving perseverance that can draw us into a deeper appreciation of God’s call to transform ourselves and the world in which we live. Two crucial factors impacting on an approach to perseverance are self-discipline and a vision of the future. The heart of discipline is remembering what you want and staying focused on the journey towards getting what you want, in other words, a vision and a goal. The clearer our vision of what we want in the future, the better our chances are of mustering up the energy and sustaining the self-discipline to achieve that vision - the sharper the vision the more likely the perseverance. Jesus himself gives us frequent examples of his steadfastness. It is good to ask ourselves what enabled him to endure his particular trials and temptations. The answer is simple. Jesus persevered the same way we do: by remembering God loved him and he wanted all people to know that they too were loved as intensely. His vision was totally clear and his path was sure. Even his energy to keep going came from the fact that he knew there was no other way to achieve his goal. He kept to what he had been taught and knew to be true.

THE GOLD COAST CATHOLIC LIBRARY: “Why should I believe in God?” The answer you may be called on to give to this question takes you into the realm of Apologet-ics. This “defence of ideas” can be complex but in his book “Unapologetic” Francis Spufford, a young and very readable writer, takes on contemporary atheists, like Daw-kins, who issues a challenge to believers. Spufford writes of his book “ You can easily look up what Christians be-lieve in. You can read any number of defences of Chris-tian ideas. This, however, is a defence of Christian emo-tions—of their intelligibility, of their grown—up dignity. It is called UNAPOLOGETIC because it isn’t giving an ‘APOLOGIA’, the technical term for a defence of the ide-as .And also because I’M NOT SORRY.”
ANOINTING MASS: The next Anointing Mass will be held on Tuesday 14th November at 10am in the Sacred Heart Church. Everyone is welcome to attend and stay on afterwards for light refreshments in the Parish Hospitality Centre, hosted by the Surfers Paradise Catholic Ladies . All SPCL are asked to bring a plate to share. The monthly meeting of the SPCL will be held in the afternoon.
