FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners, Today, fi y days a er Easter, we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost. O en mes we refer to the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity as the Paraclete. In fact, one of the op onal Gospel readings for today is the one of Jn 15: 26-27; 16:12-15 where our Lord specifically says: When the Advocate [or Paraclete] comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will tes fy to me. Thus, I thought it will be appropriate to explain at least briefly what we mean when we call the Holy Spirit the Paraclete. And I’ll do so, following some of the teachings of St. John Paul II on the subject. The Greek word is parakletos and it really means someone who is called in; but it is the reason why the person is called in which gives the word its dis nc ve associa ons. The Greeks used the word in a wide variety of ways. A parakletos might be a person called in to give witness in a law court in someone’s favor; he might be an advocate called in to plead the cause of someone under a charge which would issue in serious penalty; he might be an expert called in to give advice in some difficult situa on; he might be a person called in when, for example, a company of soldiers were depressed and dispirited to put new courage into their minds and hearts. Always a parakletos is someone called in to help in me of trouble or need. The Holy Spirit is therefore the defender, “‘the advocate,’ as well as the ‘mediator’ who fulfills the func on of intercessor. It is this meaning of ‘advocate-defender’ that now interests us, without forge ng that some Fathers of the Church use Parakletos in the sense of ‘Counselor’ speaking of the Holy Spirit’s ac on in the Church.” First of all, says St. John Paul II, “Christ himself is the first Paraclete” because when He was in the upper room, He announced the coming of the Holy Spirit, saying: The Father will give you another Paraclete. “These words,” con nued the Holy Father, “indicate that Christ himself is the first Paraclete, and that the Holy Spirit’s ac on will be like that of Christ and in a sense prolong it.” Jesus Christ, is our “defender” and remains such, as St. John writes in his First Le er: If anyone does sin, we have an advocate (parakletos) with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous (1 Jn 2:1). In this sense, the advocate “is he who, taking the part of those who are guilty because of sin commi ed, defends them from the penalty due to their sins, and saves them from the danger of losing eternal life and salva on. This is precisely what Jesus Christ did,” says the Holy Father. The Paraclete will be “another advocate-defender” also for a second reason. Remaining with Christ’s disciples, He will watch over them with his omnipotent power. I will pray the Father, Jesus said, and he will give you another Paraclete to be with you forever (Jn 14:16). He dwells in you, and will be in you (Jn 14:16). The Holy Spirit-Paraclete will be the advocate-defender of the apostles, and of all those down through the centuries in the Church who will be the heirs of their witness and apostolate. This is especially so in difficult moments when they are tested to the point of heroism. This was Jesus’ prophecy and promise: They will deliver you up to councils...you will be dragged before governors and kings.... When they deliver you up, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say...for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you (Mt 10:17-20; likewise Mk 13:11; Lk 12:12 says: for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that hour what you ought to say). It is from the Holy Spirit that the apostles, and indeed, that all of us receive the power to bear witness of Christ according to his promise: I will give you a mouth of wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict (Lk 21:15). May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Spouse of the Holy Spirit, grant us the grace to invoke Him always and be faithful to his inspira ons. May God bless you all! Fr. Gustavo Nieto, IVE

Sacred Music & LiturgyTHE SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOST

Pope Benedict XVI on Sacred Music ~ The Primacy of Singing

THE IMPORTANCE of music in biblical religion is shown very simply by the fact that the verb “to sing” (with related words such as “song”, and. so forth) is one of the most commonly used words in the Bible. It occurs 309 times in the Old Testament and thirty-six in the New. When man comes into contact with God, mere speech is not enough. [The Spirit of the Liturgy, (SF, CA: Ignatius, 2000), p. 136] The singing of the Church comes ultimately out of love. It is the utter depth of love that produces the singing. “Cantare amantis est”, says St. Augustine, singing is a lover’s thing. In so saying, we come again to the trinitarian interpretation of Church music. The Holy Spirit is love, and it is he who produces the singing. He is the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit who draws us into love for Christ and so leads to the Father. [The Spirit of the Liturgy, (SF, CA: Ignatius, 2000), p. 142]
