Dear Dante friends,

So many good things come from Venice: The Carnival, the

Bienneale, i cicchetti, blown glass and merletti, Arlecchino,

the bigoli and so on. But did you know that one of the

most-used Italian expressions, “Ciao”, also comes from

there? Have you ever wondered what "Ciao" means?

We reveal it this month in the Parola del mese on page 7.

The stage is finally set for the traditional Dante play. On

Sunday 22 July, Matteo and his cast will perform this year’s

play, titled Funerale all'italiana. What better way to lighten

a cold Sunday afternoon?

After the play, be sure to stick around for our get-together

with drinks and refreshments where you will have the

opportunity to mingle with our new stars.

Incontri mensili di domenica pomeriggio per bambini e adolescenti di famiglie italiane di 5-10 anni, e nuovo corso per 10-14 anni per mantenere la lingua e la cultura italiane qui in Nuova Zelanda.Costo: $10.00 a bambino, fratelli $5.00.Domenica 29 luglio, 2pm-4pm. Confermare la presenza.

Fiorella’s exercise class is suspended until November 2018. We will keep you posted on the dates when it will resume.

CineClub Dante

CineClubDante comes back Tuesday the 10 July at 10am, during our term’s break.This time, we will leave the hot, sunny Sicily of our beloved Commissario Montalbano to move to the foggy, cold city of Parma (with its dripping gutters, dank back alleys and out-at-elbow pizza parlours) where the episodes of the Italian TV series Commissario Soneri take place. Commissario Soneri is a character from the books of Valerio Varesi, an Italian journalist and author of crimenovels.

The Commissario Soneri novels and TV series have been very successful in Italy. In Soneri’s character we can find traces of Wilkie Collins’ Sergeant Cuff (the enthusiastic cultivator of wild roses in The Moonstone), as well as Simenon’s dogged, Calvados-imbibing Maigret, who is likewise given to bouts of luxurious eating combined with morose cogitations on man’s corruptibility.See you Tuesday the 10 July, 10am at Dante, to meet Commissario Soneri!The episode will have English subtitles.

Dante’s Play Funerale all’italiana Sunday

Finalmente ci siamo: i nostri studenti/attori si stanno

preparando alla messa in scena di Funerale all’italiana

che avverrà domenica 22 luglio alle 5.30pm

all’Auditorium del Freemans Bay Community Centre.

Lo spettacolo è adatto a tutte le età ed i livelli di

italiano!

Dopo lo spettacolo, ci saranno drinks e refreshments.

Vi aspettiamo numerosi alla tradizionale Play di metà

anno della Dante!

There we are at the end: our students/actors are

preparing to go on stage with Funerale all’italiana on

Sunday 22 July at 5.30pm at the Auditorium of the

Freemans Bay Community Centre.

The show is suitable for all ages and for all level of

Italian language skills.

After the play there will be some drinks and

refreshments for every one - feel free to join us for our

traditional Play of mid year and the get-together

afterwards.

Festa della Repubblica - Italian Republic Day, 3 June 2018 in AucklandOn Saturday 2 June the Embassy of Italy in New Zealand and the Dante Alighieri Society celebrated the Italian National Day, Festa della Repubblica, with an Aperitivo at Palazzo Italia.

For the occasion of the Festa della Repubblica celebrations in Auckland, Sandro Aduso, President of the ComItEs, past president of the Dante Auckland, and a pillar of the Italian community in New Zealand, was awarded the title of Maestro del Lavoro. The Stella al Merito del Lavoro (Star of Merit for Labour) is bestowed by decree of the President of the Italian Republic on the recommendation of the Minister of Economic Development, and was presented to Sandro by the Italian Ambassador Fabrizio Marcelli. It is the first time in history that the the Stella al Merito del Lavoro has been conferred in New Zealand.

Saltimbocca

The dish, which apparently originated from Rome, contains thin slices of veal topped with salty prosciutto and sage leaves. These ingredients, joined together with a toothpick, are sautéed in a pan and softened in white wine until the meat is done. Different varieties of meat, such as chicken, are also used for preparing the saltimbocca.

Ciao!

Il saluto “ciao” deriva da un antico saluto veneziano, "s’ciavo", cioè "schiavo" (sottinteso: vostro), con il quale si esprimeva riguardo. Da "s’ciavo" a "s’ciao" a “ciao” il passo è breve.L’espressione «schiavo vostro» o «servo vostro», comune secoli fa, si ritrova, tra l’altro, nelle commedie di Goldoni (1707-1793) e nella formula germanica di cortesia "servus", usata ancora nella regione della Baviera, che significa la stessa cosa.

Iniziate sistemando la carne su un tagliere, eliminando eventuali nervetti e grasso e poi battete con un batticarne e adagiate le fette di prosciutto e poi le foglie di salvia che andrete ad infilzare con gli stuzzicadenti facendo entrare la punta prima da un lato e poi dall’altro.

Lasciate fondere il burro in padella e non appena sarà ben caldo adagiate i saltimbocca nella padella e lasciateli rosolare un paio di minuti per lato. Successivamente sfumate con il vino bianco versandolo lentamente sulla carne.

Aggiustate di sale e di pepe e servire i saltimbocca alla romana in un piatto da portata. Irrorateli con il fondo di cottura, al quale potete aggiungere un pizzico di farina o maizena per renderlo piu’ cremoso se fosse troppo liquido.Si possono servire aperti o arrotolati e fermati con uno stuzzicadente
