Online Registration

What is a Module?

A self-contained unit of teaching and learning, which is usually studied over one semester. Each module has a credit value, normally 5 credits

Types of Modules• Core module

• You must do these modules as they’re a necessary part of your degree. You’re normally pre-registered to them

• Option module• You can generally choose from several options within a group

of modules

• Elective module• General Elective• In-Programme Elective• Structured Electives• Discovery modules

Elective Modules• There are two types of Elective modules

• In-Programme Electives • General Electives

• You can register to them through the Electives tab• Spaces on General Electives are randomly allocated on

7/8 September• If you don’t get your General Elective don’t worry, you can

register to a different General Elective on or after 8 September

What is an Elective?• Every degree in UCD is made up of a series of modules. • Most modules are directly related to the subject of your degree (e.g.

history or biology).• However, each semester you get to choose one module on any topic that

like from all the modules offered by UCD. • That free choice module is an Elective.

Here are some questions you might want to ask yourself..

Here are some questions you might want to ask yourself before you make your choice:

All possible if you use your Elective choice wisely.

Do I want to use my elective choice to learn a bit more about the main subject of my degree?

Do I want to use my elective choice to learn something completely new that I think might be interesting?

Do I want to use my elective choice to take up a new language or to continue to study a language I enjoy?

Do I want to get a new perspective on a topic of global significance, such as climate change or war?

Do I want to use my elective choice to build up a new skill over time e.g. take several Spanish language elective?

Learn more about your chosen degree subject

You will be able to find Elective modules by searching for your subject...

For example if you are studying Science, you might be interested in taking more biology related modules. You can search under the subject ‘Biology and Environmental Science’ to find a list of these modules.

Remember to choose a module at the right level. Generally in your first year of study you should be choosing level 1 modules. In Biology these will all have module codes that begin BIOL1

Learn something completely new

If you are studying Science but have always been interested in English literature, you may want to take a module on English literature.

You can search for modules offered by the School of English, Drama and Film to find one that is suitable.

Remember to choose a module at the right level. Generally in your first year of study you should be choosing level 1modules. In English these will all have module codes that begin: ENG1 or DRAM1 or EDF1 or CRWT1

Study a languageThere are many different language classes offered in UCD, many at introductory level.

Some of these modules are offered by the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics others by the Applied Language Centre.

You can search for the specific language you are interested in within the modules offered by those units.

UCD has a small number of modules called Discovery modules.

Each module is linked to an issue of global significance and the teachers come from different Colleges in the University.

Build expertise by linking Electives

If you want, you can take some of your Electives on related topics to build a ‘Structured Elective’.

You can use a ‘Structured Elective’ to highlight specific skills you have developed because it will be named on your Diploma Supplement (the information provided with your degree).

Are there any restrictions on your choice?

Timetable – you cannot register to a module that clashes with another module that you are taking.

Module Capacity – all modules set a maximum capacity, if this is exceeded you will go into a lottery for a place on the module.

Pre-requisites – some modules require background knowledge (e.g. maths), you will only be able to take the module if you have this prerequisite knowledge. This is uncommon in level 1 modules.

What are your Fees?• Your Programme Fees are made up of three separate

charges• Undergraduate Tuition Fee• Student Contribution Charge• Student Centre Levy

• You will be charged per module taken, there are no overall “Registration Fees”

• You can pay in two instalments• One third in September • Two thirds in January

SUSI• Student Universal Support Ireland• Put your SUSI Application Number

(W1718XXXXXXX) in the personal details section of Online Registration

• We talk to SUSI for you• If you are awarded the Grant it will cover the Student

Contribution Charge (€3,000)• If you are awarded Maintenance SUSI will pay it to

your bank account directly.

How to Pay?• You can pay your fees as part of Online Registration• You can also check your fees through SISWeb anytime

using the “Programme Fees and Payments” tab• If somebody is paying on your behalf, they can use the

“Third Party Payment Portal”• You can give us permission to speak to your

Parent/Guardian about your fees and registration using the Parental Authorisation Password service in the Personal Details section of Online Registration
