09:00 CHAIR’S OPENING REMARKS
09:10 REGULATION & POLICY IN THE REGION
WELCOME ADDRESS FROM THE COLOMBIAN GOVERNMENTColombia recently announced a pact with 8 other countries for the region to achieve 70% renewable energy use by 2030 (312GW), an ambitious target which more than doubles that of the EU. But what makes Colombia’s appetite for renewable energy (and storage) an excellent opportunity for local and international players? This session will highlight:• Colombia’s plans to incentivise renewable energy deployment and the main objective behind implementing energy storage in the country• How will the auctions at the end of 2019 help strengthen the Colombian market, and how will this spur on storage projects?• How will Colombia guarantee the long-term financial viability of energy storage and attract private sector financiers?
09:30
KEYNOTE PANEL: WHAT ACTION IS NEEDED FROM REGIONAL GOVERNMENTS TO FACILITATE THE DEPLOYMENT OF PROJECTS? This session will set the scene across the region, discussing the role of regional governments and how they are leading the charge for the transition in Latin America. What is the appetite for energy storage in the region? We discuss the short to long-term predictions with high-level government authorities, the energy policies driving storage in Latin America and the status of auctions for energy projects in the region, including Mexico, Peru and Chile.Join this session to find out more on the challenges of a nascent market which holds the key to a flexible power system.
10.15
PANEL DISCUSSION: THE RENEWABLE HOURDynamic renewable energy markets currently make up for almost a quarter of primary energy generation across the region, making Latin America ripe for the picking. Climate change means an inevitable shift from widespread reliance on hydropower to other renewable sources, and a renewable boom. But what are the real market needs to hit the 2030 target?• Can grids in Latin America accommodate a renewable boom and how can storage help?• How does storage fit into the current landscape of large projects?• What challenges do developers encounter on a day-to-day basis?

PANEL DISCUSSION: BOTTLENECKS & POWER CUTS: HOW WILL ENERGY STORAGE HELP UTILITIES & OFF-TAKERS IN THE LONG-RUN?This session will speak about failures in the electrical interconnections systems in the region, bottlenecks, power cuts, and the role of storage in preventing unexpected blackouts in the future like the recent ones in Argentina and Uruguay. Join this utilities session to stay up to date on:• The concerns utilities have when talking about integrating renewables onto the grid, as well as how they can reap the benefits of a changing market• What can storage do to help make up for high transmission and distribution losses and increase flexibility?• Practical considerations to bear in mind when upgrading the grid
12.40
PANEL DISCUSSION: RELIABILITY & RESILIENCE Energy storage technologies can act as an enabler for services across the region, and their practical applications, particularly in rural areas, are hugely beneficial. This session will cover resilience and reliability for off-grid communities, as well as the role of microgrids in disaster response.• Emergency response - putting storage technologies to practical use and enabling public sector services• The role of microgrids and mini grids in disaster response, with the inevitable threat of future climate emergencies• How could microgrids be deployed to support transmission & distribution?

SUCCESS STORIES & AVOIDING PITFALLSJoin us in the afternoon to gain first-hand insight from developers, installers and integrators with active and pending storage projects in region. The Galapagos Islands – One of the world’s first 100% renewable energy island power systems, Isabela Island Hybrid Power solar-plus-storage facility, pioneered by the Ecuadorean government to transform the infrastructure.El Salvador – Capella Solar Park. 140MW hybrid + 3MW li-ion battery, the first hybrid power plant in the country. BESS Ventanilla – 14MW battery, first of its kind in Peru and Enel’s first in the region.El Espejo de Tarapacá – 561MW PV & 300MW pumped hydro project in the Atacama desert.Aura Solar III – Lithium-ion battery of 10.5MW in Mexico.

09.10 FINANCING & INVESTMENT
KEYNOTE PANEL: INVESTING IN THE REGION’S INFRASTRUCTUREThe morning session will focus on the opportunities for investment in the market, and what may be standing in the way of investors backing storage projects and grid upgrades in Latin America. The key questions on the investment communities’ lips will be covered, including: • Best practice for monetising a nascent technology and hedging against currency or political risk• Which are the markets and storage technologies which investors are comfortable with and what are the factors that make for an attractive investment in the Latin American market?• What do the investment community think the government should do to de-risk storage?
