St. Thecla 2015 Lenten Mission We would like your input on the 2015 Lenten Mission. Last year, St Thecla worked together with St Eugene’s Parish. The mission was conducted at St Eugene’s and featured Relevant Radio hosts: Fr. Rocky, Sheila Liaugminas, and Fr. Simon. They spoke on how the Holy Family models faith in action and provided a pattern for Catholics to follow in the Year of Strong Catholic Parents.

We welcome your suggestions for potential speakers, and a potential theme for the 2015 Lenten Mission. The 2015 Lenten Mission will be combined with St Eugene’s. We also ask for doers to plan, coordinate, and implement the many tasks required to make the 2015 Lenten Mission successful. Please e-mail your suggestions to Deacon Mike McManus at: [email protected] Or drop off a note at the Parish Office. Thank you for your input.

Events and projects to get involved in to sup-port begin Pro-Life

1.)St. Thecla participates in the annual Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women’s Cen-ters of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and fami-lies experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering

emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God’s Grace, the centers saved over 36,000 babies—and their mothers—from abortion since opening in 1984. Please take a Baby Bottle home with you, fill it with spare change, and return it the weekend of Oct. 25-26.

2.) Spiritually adopt an unborn baby. Spiritually adopting an unborn child involves praying for an unborn child on a daily basis for nine months. Take a prayer card which is available; give your adopted child a name and write it down on the back of the card. Every day say the prayer which is on the back of the prayer card. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love you very much, I beg you to spare the life of (child’s name), the unborn baby that I have

spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion. (prayer of Archbishop Fulton Sheen)

3.) The 40 Days for Life campaign started and con-tinues through November 2. This is a time for prayer, fasting and keeping vigil to end abortion. St. Thecla parishioners can participate in the prayer outside the Albany Clinic at 5086 N. Elston Ave. St. Thecla’s day is October 21st Midnight to noon. Sign up sheets are at the church exits. Pray for Life!

Sick List - We pray for all those in nursing homes, homebound or who require extended care and those who care for them: Help us with the responsibility of keeping the sick list up to date and accurate. Please call the office when the status of someone’s health changes.

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, —by the power of God—thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Święty Michale Archaniele! Wspomagaj nas w walce, a przeciw niegodziwości i zasadzkom złego ducha bądź naszą obroną. Oby go Bóg pogromić raczył, pokornie o to prosimy, a Ty, Wodzu niebieskich zastępów, szatana i inne złe duchy, które na zgubę dusz ludzkich po tym świecie krążą, mocą Bożą strąć do piekła. Amen.

Many Generations of Saint Thecla By: Miss Laura Lechner

On September 19th, Saint Thecla School hosted Grandparents’ Day. We welcomed grandparents to attend mass and join their grandchildren back at school to see the classrooms and the exciting lessons being learned and projects being created. For some of the visitors, Saint Thecla is a meaningful place because of the history it holds for them. Some grandparents attended this school as a student years ago, and their children after them, and now their grandchildren are students here. For

many, Saint Thecla is more than a school; it’s a tradition. Mrs. Jackie Sadler attended the event to visit with her three grandchildren. Mrs. Sadler’s late husband, John Sadler, was a graduate of Saint Thecla. Mr. and Mrs. Sadler’s two children attended school at St. Thecla as well. Mrs. Sadler said, “Saint Thecla is meaningful to me be-

cause of the wonderful education, the foundation of our spiri-tual values, and the outstanding sense of community that Saint Thecla provides.” She also reminisced about the carnival fund-raiser that used to be held here. Mrs. Sadler said that the event really brought the whole community together; everyone volun-teered and helped make the event successful. Sadler also has many memories of attending the pancake breakfasts hosted by the Boy Scouts. She is happy that her grandsons are carrying out this tradition.

The Thecla roots run deep for the Schrader family as well. Mrs. Kathy Schrader attended Grandparents’ Day to spend time with her three grandchildren (she has another grandchild that is now in high school). Mrs. Schrader explained that her grandchildren are fourth generation students of Saint Thecla School; her mother, Irene Lesniak, was a part of Thecla’s 2nd graduating class in 1929. Kathy Schrader sent all five of her children to school at Saint Thecla, because she enjoys the strong sense of community. Her son, Michael Schrader, met his wife, Missy Ryndak (Schrader), here at school. Missy’s parents, Jerry and Linda Ryndak, were also graduates of St. Thecla. Jerry Ryndak explained, “I met my wife in 8th grade. Linda was a transfer student, and I saw her for the first time on the playground.” Jerry reflected on his positive experience as a Thecla student. He described his fondness for the Catholic environment and his involvement with being an alter server. Mr. Ryndak later went to Seminary for two years, and was reconnected with his now wife after the Vietnam War. He has continued to embrace his Catholic faith, and he now works as a Deacon for the Church.

The Nelson and Haran families have a strong presence in the Thecla community. Mrs. Nancy Halpin (Haran) graduated in 1964 and is proud to be attending her 50th class reunion this year. She has a group of about five friends that still keep in touch after all these years. Nancy remembers having large classes of about 40 students, but said that she never felt that it was crowded or that she was overlooked. She felt that it was important to send her four children to this school. Nancy’s children, Shannon Haran Nelson and Patrick Haran, both have children currently enrolled at Saint Thecla. Shannon Nelson’s husband, Jerry Nelson, has become a really involved parent and parishioner as well. He shared his fondness of the school with his sister, Jennifer Euler. Mrs. Euler has one child attending Thecla currently and one that graduated two years ago. Current students, Johnny Euler and Ryan Nelson, could not be happier to share their grade school experience as cousins and best friends. Mrs. Pat Nelson stated that having her grandchildren attend St. Thecla has united her family. She feels as if she has known Nancy Haran for years. The two grandmothers were proud to have a close-knit family, and to be able to visit all of their grandchildren in one place. Saint Thecla School embraces the history and memories of the past, while continuing to grow and create many new experi-ences. We welcome and encourage everyone to be a part of our compassionate school family.

Our school is growing! Have you considered Catholic school for your

children? We have 3 and 4 year old preschool with half-

day and full-day options. K through 8th grade receive auxiliary classes

as well as traditional academics; 1:1 ipads; technology; and a curriculum that is based on

the Catholic Faith.

St. Thecla School

On September 24th our students celebrated the Feast Day of our patron St. Thecla. They attended Solemn Mass which was followed with Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. After Mass Fr. Gene, Mr. Gargano and the servers went to each classroom to bless the rooms, the teachers and students. This is an annual tradition.

Find Treasure in First Grade! A group of very energetic and excited first graders have set sail on a fun filled learning adventure! They are finding their "treasures" in books, games, projects, art, and music. We began this journey reviewing and expanding our knowledge of letter sounds. We have done exciting activities on some of our letter days or were surprised by special guests. On "B" day we had a fun filled time experimenting with bubbles. On "G" day Fr. Gene and Mr. Gargano surprised us and we played a game as we learned about the hard and soft sounds of the letter. Ingredients were used on "I" day to make a spe-cial ocean themed treat. And "P" is for pirate! We made our own pirate hats, learned a pirate shanty, and chose our own pirate names. Some of our pirate names were: Shark Jumper, Battle Cannon, Gold Patches, Hot Pepper Cheetah, and Bull Shark. We have also been learning about the many hidden gems we can find in our amazing world and the great bounty of family and friends that God has given us. Remember to treasure God's love, Mrs. Lange (AKA - Crabby Squid Breath)
