Adult Faith Education
Dr. David Kirchhoffer, Director of the Queensland Bioethics Centre in the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy at ACU, will speak in the Daley Centre, Wednesday October 24 from 7.30 pm to 9 pm on the topic “Ethics of Advanced Care planning”.
Please note – This title is the focus of this presentation. Last week’s newsletter stated that abortion and euthanasia would be included in the content of the talk. This is not so. There may be time for questions on this at the end of the talk, however the content within the title is considerable, given the time available.
This talk is so opportune for parishioners who are getting older or parishioners whose parents are approaching old age. We all eventually come to the point of growing older and it makes sense for us to have thought about the implications of the process before the later stages eventually arrive.
Pope Francis has convened a synod of Bishops from Oct. 3 – 28, 2018, to discuss teenagers and young adults in the Catholic Church and to seek ways to encourage their enthusiasm and dreams. A great initiative and well overdue. Attending, will be more than 300 cardinals, bishops, priests, religious and lay people, including 30 women and several young adults. The lay people, including the women and young adults will be able to participate in the discussions but will not have the right to vote on the proposals which will go forward to Pope Francis for his consideration.
Some challenges for the Synod have been suggested by various sources.
• First, the bishops need to acknowledge that they need a lot of help on how to evangelise young people. The Church needs to listen to a wide range of young people, not just those going to church.
• Second, besides saying that they are spiritual but not religious, young people say that they want community. For many young people the church is a bureaucratic institution, not a community.
• Third, the church must be relevant to the needs of young people.
St Francis, who founded the Catholic Church’s Franciscan order, lived in Italy during the late 12th and 13th centuries. He is remembered for his generosity to the poor, his willingness to minister to the lepers and for his love for animals and nature. His feast day is celebrated on the day he died, October 4 1226. In the 20th century, St Francis’ feast day was combined with World Animal Day. Homelessness, the theme of this year’s Australian Bishop’s Social Justice statement, can also extend to animals so the RSPCA at Wacol is holding a special blessing of the animals in its shelter on Thursday 4 October.
Animals are so much a part of our lives - in the wild, on farms, in our own homes. We pray to give thanks for them and, also, to ask to be faithful caretakers of animals and the environment we must share. “Forgive us when we neglect to see all animals as part of your creation, forgive us when we neglect to acknowledge that your love beats in all hearts, and that you give breath to all creation.” Rev Barbara Allen Chaplain, Lort Smith Animal Hospital, Melbourne, 2007

SEEKING NEW MEMBERS Timor Leste Companions Group Timor Leste Companions Group Timor Leste Companions Group Timor Leste Companions Group This is a shout out to all Parishioners to consider joining our hardworking vibrant Group . We're only small in numbers but have achieved some great results in our Mission to support our Sister Parish in Timor-Leste . However to continue our work, we need support via new members and ongoing fresh ideas..."the Harvest is plentiful but the Labourers are few ". We meet once a Month on the first Thursday in the Parish Library at 7.30 pm. Please find below some Testimonials from current members.
• Six years ago I became a part of the Timor-Leste Companions Group. In 1975 as a young mother I waited in disbelief as Australia did nothing to assist that fledgling Country when it was invaded by the Indonesians . Being involved in the TLC Group has been a small way of saying "Sorry we weren't there for you as a neighbour " The Timorese I have encountered since have been amazing spiritually and inspiring in fortitude and patience. Meeting them through TLC has been a profound privilege"ol Carol Callaghan 0427650204
• I have been a part of the TLC Group since it's inception. While my family and commitments have grown since then, I am drawn to maintain an active companionship role as best I can .The people and stories I have come to know ,both here and in Liquica through this journey sustain me : and opportunities for spiritual growth abound- we can learn about the depth of faith of our Timorese brothers and sisters ,and improve their educational opportunities, whilst providing occasions to love one another in our fund raising and community events. What more can you ask for ?! Sarah Matthews 0466306897
Please feel free to contact the above members or Sarah Matthews 0466306897 or Carol Callaghan 0427650204 if you seek further info about the Group.

A little girl finally got to attend a wedding for the first time. While in the
church, the girl asked her mother: “why is the bride dressed in white?” The mother replied to the girl: “because white is the color of happiness and it’s the happiest day of her life today.” After a little bit, the girl looks up at her mother and says: “But, then why is the groom wearing black?”
