Today’s Services 8.00am Holy Communion

9.30am Sung Eucharist

Preacher: The Rev’d Helen Gibson-White Celebrant: The Rev’d Sam Goodes

A special welcome to all who are worshipping with us for the first time or visiting us today. We especially welcome those visiting us from other areas.

Please join us for a cup of tea or coffee after the service.

Sentence of the Day: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory. Isaiah 6.3

Prayer of the Day O blessed Trinity, in whom we know the Maker of all things, seen and unseen, the Saviour of all, both near and far: by your Spirit enable us so to worship your divine majesty, that with all the company of heaven we may magnify your glorious name, saying, Holy, holy, holy. Glory to you, O Lord most high. Amen.

Readings 1st Reading: Isaiah 6.1-8 OT p. 579 On Trinity Sunday we celebrate the fullness of the mystery of God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Today concludes the cycle of major events in the story of Christ: the coming of God in Advent, God’s coming in Jesus, his death and resurrection, and last week, the gift of the Spirit to Christ’s church. This reading has been chosen because it depicts God as mystery, and the words ‘Holy, holy, holy Lord’, are what we use to worship the Triune God at Holy Communion.

Psalm: Psalm 29 This psalm continues the theme of the worship of God’s holiness (v. 2). It praises God’s power and strength as seen in God’s creation. The image of a storm is used by the author to describe the awesome power of God’s presence.

1. Ascribe to the Lord you | powers · of | heaven: ascribe to the | Lord | glory · and | might. 2. Ascribe to the Lord the honour | due · to his | name: O worship the Lord in the | beauty | of his | holiness. 3. The voice of the Lord is up | on the | waters: the God of glory thunders * the Lord up | on the | great | waters. 4. The voice of the Lord is mighty in | oper | ation: the voice of the | Lord · is a | glori · ous | voice. 5. The voice of the Lord | breaks the | cedar-trees: The Lord breaks in | pieces · the | cedars · of | Lebanon. 6. He makes them | skip · like a | calf: Lebanon and Sirion | like a | young wild | ox. 7. The voice of the Lord di | vides the | lightning-flash: the voice of the Lord whirls the sands of the desert * the Lord | whirls the | desert · of | Kadesh. 8. The voice of the Lord rends the terebinth trees * and strips | bare the | forests: in his | temple | all cry | ‘Glory’. 9. The Lord sits enthroned a | bove the | water-flood: the Lord sits en | throned · as a | king for | ever. 10.The Lord will give | strength · to his | people: the Lord will give to his | people · the | blessing · of | peace.

2nd Reading: Romans 8.12-17 NT p. 146 Paul contrasts slavery and freedom, for in his time, a slave was dominated by fear, could not inherit, and had little reason to hope. In contrast, a free person could inherit and enjoy all the privileges of an heir. In Christ, we have been adopted as God’s children through Christ, to receive the power of the Spirit. Though the word Trinity is coined by the Church at a later time, Paul’s use of God, Christ and Spirit is one reason why Christians came to describe their understanding of the mystery of God as Trinity: three persons, one God.

Gospel: John 3.1-17 NT p. 87 Jesus uses two different metaphors to help Nicodemus understand life in the kingdom of God: being born again by the Spirit, and the story of the serpent in the wilderness. One of the most famous passages in the Bible, John 3:16, sums up our response to Jesus. It means that we have faith not because we know and comprehend God fully, but because first, we have been drawn into a mystery which escapes our complete understanding and is a love and wisdom we will only ever comprehend in part; an important place to begin when celebrating the understanding of God as Trinity.

Affirm anew the three-fold name (A&M 268) 1. Affirm anew the three-fold name

of Father, Spirit, Son, our God whose saving acts proclaim a world’s salvation won. In him alone we live and move and breath and being find, the wayward children of his love who cares for humankind.

2. Declare in all the earth his grace, to every heart his call, the living Lord of time and place whose love embraces all. So shall his endless praise be sung, his teaching truly heard, and every culture, every tongue, receive his timeless word.

3. Confirm our faith in this our day amid earth’s shifting sand, with Christ as Life and Truth and Way, a Rock on which to stand; the one eternal Son and Lord by God the Father given, the true and life-imparting Word, the Way that leads to heaven.

4. Renew once more the ancient fire, let love our hearts inflame; renew, restore, unite, inspire the Church that bears your name; one name exalted over all, one Father, Spirit, Son, O grant us grace to heed your call and in that name be one. Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926)

Father of heaven, whose love profound (A&M 628)

1. Father of heaven, whose love profound a ransom for our souls hath found, before thy throne we sinners bend, to us thy pardoning love extend.

2. Almighty Son, incarnate Word, our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord, before thy throne we sinners bend, to us thy saving grace extend.

3. Eternal Spirit, by whose breath, the soul is raised from sin and death, before thy throne we sinners bend, to us thy quickening power extend.

4. Thrice Holy! Father, Spirit, Son; mysterious Godhead, Three in One, before thy throne we sinners bend, grace, pardon, life to us extend.

Edward Cooper (1770-1833)

Praise with joy, the world’s Creator (TiS 179)

1. Praise with joy, the world’s Creator, God of justice, love and peace, source and end of human knowledge, force of greatness without cease. Celebrate the Maker’s glory, power to rescue and release.

2. Praise the Son who feeds the hungry, frees the captive, finds the lost, heals the sick, upsets religion, fearless both of fate and cost. Celebrate Christ’s constant presence – Friend and Stranger, Guest and Host.

3. Praise the Spirit sent among us, liberating truth from pride, forging bonds where race or gender, age or nation dare divide. Celebrate the Spirit’s treasure – foolishness none dare deride.

4. Praise the Maker, Son and Spirit, one God in community, calling Christians to embody oneness and diversity. Thus the world shall yet believe, when shown Christ’s vibrant unity.

MEDITATION “He that cannot forgive others,

breaks the bridge over which he himself must pass if he would ever reach heaven; for everyone has need to be forgiven.”

For your Prayers this week The Nations and People of the Earth:

Those areas of the world, especially in Africa and the Middle East, where there is violence, pain and hardship for local communities and refugees. Reconciliation between different cultures, beliefs and ideologies throughout the world, and the healing of race relations between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians.

The Church and its Mission: Christ’s Mission and Christian Unity around the world. The National Council of Churches. The Anglican Church of Korea, Primate Archbishop Dongsin Park, his clergy and people. The Parish of Toorak Gardens, Grant Bullen, Rector, Lesley McLean and Peter Anson, Assistant Priests. The Church of the Province of Myanmar, giving thanks for the work they do to further God’s mission in the world.

At St Andrew’s we pray for: Residents, staff and helpers at Walkerville Residential Care. The Rev’d Helen Gibson-White and the Rev’d Rachel Chapman. A greater appreciation of the mystery of the Trinity and its central place in the beliefs and practices of the Church.

Ourselves and our Community: For those who struggle with the balance of faith, for those who find God the Father abstract, or the Spirit too confronting, or Jesus too distant.

Special Prayer Request: Meg Robertson, John O’Brien, Marianne Cannon, Judy Brancis, Mariela, 6-years old Rhiannon Henry-Edwards, Anna McKenzie.

The Departed Anne Haskard – died Tuesday 15th May

WINTER APPEAL: Parish Council are pleased to support the parish’s involvement in the Anglicare Winter Appeal. We seek donations of blankets and warm clothing, and donations of cash (or online directly to Anglicare) to support this important ministry. Malcolm Allen is looking for volunteers to help distribute flyers to the surrounding community to raise the profile of this appeal.

News from the Parish Council Parish Council has been busy over the past couple of months, with some important issues to consider and discuss. Here is a summary of some of the more topical issues: Following the motion raised by DeDe Stoba at the Vestry Meeting, Parish Council concluded that there would be no change to the current practice regarding fees charged for parishioners for weddings and funerals. As has always been the case, there is discretion for these fees to be waived by the Rector in some cases, and Parish Council believed that this was a pastoral way forward. In relation to the proposed refinement to the Trust Deed, I thank those who provided their feedback which was much appreciated by Parish Council as they considered the matter. It was concluded that at this stage there was no need to make any further changes to the Trust Deed, which will be now re-printed in its amended and approved form.

The Bell Tower project has reached its next stage, with a Client Agreement being signed with Arcuate Architecture, who will be responsible for drawing up the plans for the re-fit of the bell tower, including new staircase access to the bells and the clock. There is still no firm time-frame for the removal of the bells and the clock and the re-fit to begin. Our budget position remains worrying, with a decline in Offertory giving meaning that we are behind our budget in terms of income. Parish Council are considering numerous ways to increase the fund-raising for the parish, but continue to pray for an increased heart for giving among the wider congregation.
