    IN ASSOCIATION WITH

  • WELCOME TO THE 9TH CRYSTAL PALACE OVERGROUND FESTIVAL!

The festival team are so excited to welcome you to the 9th festival this year we are getting on a bit now and like to think we get better with age! Again Crystal Palace outdoes itself with a festival that is accessible and inclusive and above all fun and creative. Thats what we strive for every year and as our leafy part of London changes and new people arrive, the festival is a wonderful way of us all getting involved in something that has far-reaching effects beyond our five days in June.

As we go through year planning and organising, our volunteers make new friends and become more connected to our community and when the big week arrives, all of Crystal Palace comes outside to celebrate and be with each other excuse us while we pontificate a bit but its a beautiful thing!

This year we see the return of our Westow Park event on Saturday, Vintage up the Palace on Sunday in Crystal Palace park gardens, the Electric Palace open air cinema and the mighty Metamono at Anerley Town Hall. Theres tons to choose from including carefully chosen bands who will make it impossible to stand still, mouth-watering food and fabulous cocktails, beers and ciders, our Kids Zone, a festival within the festival, and an eclectic range of activities such as the Morris dancing, massage, beauty therapies, swing dancing, an arts and crafts market, the Bigger Picture Gallery, vintage shopping, local campaigns and community groups such as Transition Town. Guest events from our local pubs, community groups, churches, traders and artists are also a

massive part of the festival so make sure you have a good read of the guide and plan your festival days carefully so you dont miss out!

So how does this festival come to be each year? By the magic of our local community thats how big love and thanks to all our sterling volunteers you are just amazing and nothing would happen with you! A massive thank you to our local businesses too who sponsor the festival, advertise in the guide, host stalls and events and are such a huge part of this event. Finally thank you to the public, the people of Crystal Palace who come and enjoy, who donate money to support and who give us lots of love in exchange for our hard work.

This year a very special project for young people is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund to learn about the original Crystal Palace and share this with you through performance. Find out more about the whole project on page 20. We are also lucky enough to have received funding from the Big Lottery Awards for All Fund.

If you would like to support the festival and keep it free for all to attend 90% of our events are free then please do make a donation at crystalpalacefestival.org

  • Look out for Spectrum, an immersive gaming experience, at Vintage up the Palace on Sunday 28 June. We invite you to look through the Prism, where the light refracts the story of The Crystal Palace. A spectrum of possibilities, memories and wonders. Engulfed in flames and resurrected, the glass walls reflect the palace of past and illuminates the palace today. With the help of the London Metropolitan Archives, the Street Arts Academy have captured the light, the colours, the stories in a playful and interactive pop-up experience. What will you see?

ABOUT THE PROJECTThe festival has received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to support 20 local young people in research and archiving workshops at the London Metropolitan Archives. Led by their archivists and a youth arts practitioner from Emergency Exit Arts, they will then use their research to create a street arts performance to bring to the festival. Inspired by the 2014 festival project The Extreme Fans, this is a wonderful opportunity for young people from Crystal Palace to learn more about their own heritage, gain research skills and be part of the Street Arts Academy, developing their performance skills and self-confidence.
