Read Genesis 11:1-9. We see that the account of Babel occurred before Genesis chapter ten. We understand this because the list in Genesis chapter ten is given in a four-fold division by geographical, dialectical, tribal, and national. The whole earth spoke the same language up to this point so there would be no dialectical division. The listing in Genesis chapter ten is the result of the scattering from Babel. The account is not chronological. It shows us the reason for the scattering and brings us right into the lineage of Seth to Abraham. The tower of Babel is the result of sinful man working together without God.

The Bible Says That All Men Are Sinners. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory to God.” (Romans 3:23).

God’s Word Also Says That Sin Must Be Paid For. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

The Good News Is That Christ Paid for Our Sins. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8).

We Must Personally Pray and Receive Christ by Faith as Our Personal Saviour. The Bible Says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13).

When you hear a different language let

it strengthen your faith in God’s Word.

The Plain Speech of Man Plain speech is easily understood. Noah’s sons and their descendants all speak the same language. The whole earth can communicate together. The descendants of Ham and Japheth would be of one spirit, one pride, one goal, one culture, and one religion. They were only missing God. These descendants journeyed from the east and dwelt in Shinar. Who is the “they” in this verse? Read Genesis 10:8-10. It is Nimrod trying to found the first world empire. It seems most everyone is gathered around the city. We see these descendants disobeying God’s command to scatter and replenish the earth from Genesis 9:1 and 9:7. Due to having one language these people were

well advanced in architecture, building, inventing, and producing. This is Cain’s lineage from Genesis 4:22, “And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.” The people were working closely together.

Lead by Nimrod, these people begin to build a city to bring world unity and a world power. It would be a one world government, currency, religion, culture, and education. This is the same agenda the Anti-christ will have. There is nothing new under the sun. Satan has had the same tactics and agenda since day one. In this city the people begin to build a tower to heaven. This is not referring to this tower touching the heavens but displaying false gods for the people to see and worship. It was the center for worship and would contain the the many idols.

God comes down to earth to see what man has done. God sees the advancement and skill of man mixed with his evil heart. God sees man’s pride and disregard for Him. God acts in judgment and the Bible says, “Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.” Confound means to throw into disorder or to perplex. God changes the languages of the people. Here we see the reference in Genesis 10:5, 20, and 30. These people cannot communicate anymore and the work comes to screeching halt. In judgment we see God’s grace. These languages force man to disperse across the earth. It gives the people a fresh opportunity to return to Him. Have you ever wondered why we speak so many different languages today? Right here in Genesis eleven we have the birth of the diverse languages we see today. We must remember to take the truths of God’s Word and look out into our world today. The fact that we see diverse languages confirms the truth taught in Genesis chapter eleven. Genesis 1-11 gives us a firm foundation to understand all that is going on in our world today.

The Pride of Man

Why would the people desire to build such a city and tower? Nimrod and his people wanted to make a name for themselves. They were trying to prohibit themselves from being scattered over the earth. The only ingredient missing in this project was God and His approval. Pride set in through Satan’s seed. Just as Satan desired to have a name higher than God, Nimrod desired to have a name and power above God. Read Isaiah 14:12-14 and Proverbs 16:18.The Perplexing of the Languages of Man
