THE ART OF JOE KLUCAR “MANGROVE B3”One of my goals for this year’s paintings was to somehow incorporate the river. I wanted to highlight our amazing location and native plants and wildlife. Secondly, I wanted to show some love to the Hammond B-3. The B-3’s iconic sound is such a big part of the history of rhythm and blues. We owe a debt of gratitude to the instrument as well as the musicians who lug this heavy piece of equipment around to gigs to deliver that authentic sound. I love mangrove trees and in my initial sketches, I had the B-3 in the middle of the river with the mangrove branches growing out of it but, it wasn’t working, the instrument is so massive looking that it looked more like an oak tree. When I had the idea to break the keyboards and controls onto 3 different branches of the mangrove, it was truly an “A-ha” moment for me.

It has been my honor to be a part of the Riverwalk Blues Festival for so many years. Thank you all for your interest in my work! Also, thank you Dar and Gerardo for all the hard work you do to keep the festival alive and better every year!

Hailing from Miami, JUke is a new breed of Post-blues and the brainchild of singer/songwriter/harmonica whiz, Eric Garcia, who was dissatisfied with most dated, non-threatening traditional blues. Eric felt the need to bring the angst and power back into the type of music that seemed to lose some of it’s relevance and impact. Teaming up with guitar phenom and singer, Evan Lamb, was the catapult that made JUke go and realize Eric’s vision. The addition of powerhouse drummer, Brian Lange, and the endless grooves from synth-bassist and keyboard player, Max Farber, have completed the unique hybrid that has be-come JUke. JUke’s songwriting is one of the things that separate them from the pack. The subject matter and lyrical content has long been hailed by their fans and only adds to their legend. Couple that with their performance and musicianship, and you have a band you can learn to love.

Young “Old friend” of the Riverwalk Blues and Music Festival, and Blues Music Award Winner, Matt Hill surprised the world of blues when he introduced us to his fiance at the time Nikki on the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise back on on 2012. Nikki, originally from North Carolina relocated to St Louis, MO. and started her unstoppable carreer with Matt by her side. The South Florida crowd had an advantage on the rest of the world when she performed at the 23 Riverwalk Blues and Music Festival in 2013. By now the Hills are international stars and we welcome them back!

With a no-filter energy, and explosive live show, they deliver a sound that will make you believe in rock ‘n’ roll again! With a Hurricane force of a band, Nikki’s unique voice with raw rock and soul dynamics mixed with the strength, passion, and honesty of blues shouters of the past, creates a breath of fresh air with their authentic approach to American roots music. If you haven’t heard of her yet, prepare for your ‘whiplash moment’—you have been warned.

Nikki is set to perform Friday Feb 26 at 8:30pm on the Don Cohen Memorial Stage, to learn more about Nikki Hill please visit her website www.nikkihillmusic.com

The Musicians Exchange™ Cafe was the original birth place for the South Florida music scene guided by the hand of Don Cohen, on Mondays the ME would have a jam session called “BLUESBERRY JAM” which was hosted by MOTEL Mel Seba, was and opportunity for Local Musicians who were working, hoping to work or find Bands. Bands trying to showcase looking for Gigs or just in need to express their talents in a venue that was solely geared for the EXCHANGE of those who had the Spirit of Music. Listeners and Performers were welcome. Don Cohen and Sheldon Voss had created an Atmosphere that was both Cosmic and Contagious which encouraged the creation of Fabulous Music and started many Long term Friendships.

“Don Cohen asked me to host what became to be one of the first, and most unique sessions in South Florida. Every Monday night ! Especially when we played for the post RBF concerts. Jamming with the Kinsey Report , Lucky Peterson, and putting a group together to play for Charlie Musslewhite was very thrilling” Motel Mel recalls.

For the 26 Rivewralk Blues and Music, Festival Famous Frank Ward, Capt. Reese Singleton and Motel Mel Seba will bring the nostalgia to the stage with special guests and stories from the Musicians Exchange™ days, Saturday February 27 at 12:00pm on the Don Cohen Memorial Stage.

Kat’s own musical style is a blend of the blues with hip hop, pop, rock and even country music. “It’s all related anyway”, she ex-claims. Her goal is to introduce blues music to a mainstream audience by re introducing it to the world as Blues Fusion. She is inspired by young artists such as Janelle Monae, Karreim Riggins, SyncOpera and ZZ Ward who share in her passion to revive music from the vinyl days. “It’s about the raw emotion in every note”, Kat says. “ If I can move someone to feel what I feel when I sing a song, then it’s all worth it”. With her own band, Blues Revival, she travels the world with the intent to “wake up the blues one song at a time”! Kat’s debut Blues-Fusion album “LILY ROSE” is available NOW. www.KatRiggins.com

Chris O’Leary has a vocal style that could make a believer out of a devout atheist and a harmonica style that will burn a hole straight through to the deepest part of your heart. There’s just something in his delivery that has the listener hanging on every note and every word. Seven years as a Marine and six years as a member of Levon Helm’s Barnburners are enough to convince the hardened skeptic that this cat has paid his dues.” -said Bill Wilson on a recent review of “Gonna Die Tryin’” the most recent album by harmonica virtuoso Chris O’Leary.

The Blues Music Award Nominee and Blues Blast Award Winner, has appeared on stage with: Legendary Rolling Stones side-man Bobby Keys, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Jimmy Vivino, Jeff Healy, Dan Akroyd, Albert Lee, Dave Edmunds, Dave Maxwell and the great James Cotton to name just a few. Chris has also recorded with Bill Perry and Hubert Sumlin among others. Chris is set to perform at the Don Cohen Memorial Stage on Saturday Feb 27th at 4:00pm. Singer, songwriter, guitarist, arranger and producer Johnny Rawls draws on the 1950s’ and ‘60s’ deep soul-blues tradition in his guitar playing, yet his lyrics and singing are completely 1990s.

Rawls got his early musical education from his grandfather, John Paul Newson, a blind guitarist who played around the Hattiesburg area. Rawls began playing clarinet and saxophone in third grade, and by the time he was in his teens, the band instructor hired Rawls to play in his band. As a teen, Rawls had the opportunity to back singers like Joe Tex and Z.Z. Hill. He began playing guitar at age 12, learning as much as he could from players in other area blues bands. After leaving Mississip-pi for a year when he was 17, he returned, determined to form his own blues/soul ensemble. They found work backing up touring musicians and by the mid-1970s, Rawls joined O.V. Wright’s band, working with Wright until his death in 1980. After Wright’s death, the band continued to perform his music for 13 years as the O.V. Wright Band, opening shows for people like B.B. King, Little Milton Campbell and Bobby Bland. In the mid-1980s, the O.V. Wright Band also toured with Little Johnny Taylor, Latimore, B.B. Coleman, Blues Boy Willie, and others, including Lynn White.

Rawls carries on the soul-blues tradition of people like O.V. Wright, Otis Redding and Z.Z. Hill in his singing style and guitar playing, but his arrangement, production and lyrics are steeped in the 1990s techniques and subject matter. Rawls is a true soul-blues renaissance man. Find Johnny’s most recent album “Soul Brothers” feat. Otis Clay at www.JohnnyRawlsBlues.com His performance is Saturday February 27th at 6:00pm at the Don Cohen Memorial Stage

2009 IBC (International Blues Competition) Winner & 2013 Blues Music Award Nominee for Best Contemporary Male Blues Artist of the year, JP Soars is not a typical blues guitarist. He has a diverse musical background that encompasses a multitude of influences. “ I love T-bone Walker, Jesse Mae Hemphill, Wes Montgomery, Django Reinhardt, Muddy Waters, Johnny Gui-tar Watson, Guitar Slim and Louis Jordan. But I also love Tito Puente, Miles Davis, Hank Williams, Black Sabbath and Slayer.” Soars toured the globe and recorded several records with some of the most extreme metal bands in the world before finding his home in the blues! It is these attributes that are giving Soars an instantaneously recognizable style.

JP is hosting the second “After Party” at The Downtowner Saloon starting at 9:00pm, his latest release Full Moon Night In Memphis has ranked top places in the sales lists of 2015, get your copy today!. www.jpsoars.com

In 1995 Portland Maine’s Jason Ricci began his international music career by moving to Memphis to study with former Johnny Winter sideman Pat Ramsey. That same year Ricci won the Sonny Boy Blues Society contest and played the King Biscuit festival at 20 years old. Since then Ricci has won dozens of blues and harmonica contests, toured the world and amassed an impressive collection of awards, honors and accolades. In 2010 Ricci’s album “Done With The Devil” (Delta Groove) was nominated for a BMA Award.

In 2010 Jason won the BMA Award for “Best Harmonica Player” beating his childhood heroes: Kim Wilson, Billy Branch, Mark Hummel and Rick Estrin. In 2014 Ricci was a featured artist on Johnny Winter’s Grammy Award winning album “Step Back”produced by Paul Nelson appearing along side names like Eric Clapton, Dr. John, Brian Setzer, Billy Gibbons, Leslie West and more. In 2015 Ricci was invited by Paul Shaffer to play on the HBO televised Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for Paul Butterfield. At The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Ricci performed in front of 10,000 people and millions of HBO viewers with Zac Brown ( Multi-Platinum Singer Songwriter) and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello with the Paul Shaffer band. Jason Ricci is well known for having one of the most exciting, energetic and unpredictable live shows on the circuit. His live performances are sweaty, sexual, intense and creative events. Ricci has been actively touring the Blues circuit in the USA and Europe for over twenty years.

Jasons most Recent album “Dirty Memory” a collaboration with JJ Appleton, is available at www.mooncat.org Jason’s performance at the Festival is scheduled for Saturday Feb 27th at 8:00pm on The Don Cohen Memorial Stage.

Albert Castiglia arrived on the International radar after Buddy Guy’s iconic harp-blower, Junior Wells, heard the young blues-man sing and invited him into his solo band for several world tours. The gig was a shop-window, and though Wells sadly died in 1998, Albert stayed busy, joining the great Atlanta vocalist, Sandra Hall, for national tours in the late-’90s, while he held his own in onstage jams with artists ranging from Pinetop Perkins to John Primer. He has been named “Best Blues Guitarist” by Miami New Times, the respected alternative music magazine and honored by Roots Music Report with a Top Blues Album of 2011 and 2012. Albert was also nominated for a 2009 Blues Music Award for the song “Bad Year Blues”.

Castiglia was born in New York and raised in Miami to an Italian father and Cuban mother and combines all influences to create his unique style of modern day blues with a traditional core. Albert earned his blues cred as a member of Junior Wells’ band, but his resumé is irrelevant at this point in his career. His muscular vocal style, incendiary guitar work, and fine song-writing are all the signs of an artist who’s in it for the love of music. Castiglia is an artist who sings from the gut, shoots guitar licks from the hip and writes songs that articulate ones hopes, fears and heartaches.

Albert is performing Sunday Feb 28th at The Downtowner Saloon Street Stage at 6:00pm (No Cover), for more info on his newest release please visit www.AlbertCastiglia.net

Joey Gilmore’s love affair with the guitar began in his teens. “In the town that I lived in, there was a barbershop,” Gilmore reminisces. “And the barber that owned the shop was a sanctified preacher. He was a minister, and he had this little flat-bod-ied guitar. It was electric, no amplifier to it. And he would bring it to the shop with him, and he was trying to learn how to play. So, I would get to the barbershop early whenever I would go to get my hair cut, or even after school, I would hang around at the barbershop, because I wanted to get my hands on that guitar. I would take the guitar and they had these old wooden benches. I would lay the guitar on top of the wooden bench and when you would strum the strings, the wood, the bench, would vibrate, and the floor would, the sound would resonate, and you could hear it without the amplifier. I learned just from watching him.” Young Gilmore tried to keep his obsession with the instrument from his church going aunt, who was raising him, but word of the talented boy who played at the barbershop eventually got back to her.”

Decades later and established as a Florida legend, Joey Gilmore provides a highlight at Blues Festivals and night clubs all over the world as one of the best soul-blues and R&B singers in the business. Joey Gilmore has shared the stage with Such Greats As James Brown, Etta James, Bobby Bland, Little Milton, Johnny Taylor and numerous others. In January 2006 Joey Gilmore won one of the most distinguished and internationally coveted awards in all of blues. The IBC. Joey Gilmore outscored all artist worldwide while showcasing his amazing talent at a blues industry event. Making him the best unsigned Artist on the planet. In 2008 Joey Gilmore was awarded the Blewzzy award for best song, BLUES ALL OVER YOU. In 2015 Joey Gilmore was honored with Latin World Talent Lifetime Achievement Award. He continues to soar in the music industry.

Joey is performing Sunday Feb 28th on the Downtowner Saloon Street Stage with no cover at 4:00pm. check out more in-formation about Joey Gilmore on his website www.JoeyTheBluesMan.com

The Pitbull of Blues Band is more than just a generic blues band. As a Florida based band of family and friends, “The Pitbull of Blues Band” enjoys sharing their own breed of Blues with others. Josh “The Pitbull of Blues” Rowand is the Guitar Slinger and Lead Vocalist. He is an accomplished slide guitarist, harmonica player, singer and songwriter. Deny Rowand is the bass player and backup vocalist. He has been playing since the great Beatles Scare of 1964 and adds a solid Old School approach to their music. The guy that keeps the swing in the whole damn thing is Richie Corricelli. Richie brings a bit of attitude to the blues, whether it’s a shuffle, a swing or a very traditional “flat tire” groove. With over 15 years of playing together in various forms, “The Pitbull of Blues Band” is locked up tight as a trio. With both Richie and Deny holding down the bottom line in the rhythm department, this provides Josh a solid platform to lay down his own guitar style and bring their music to life. With their strong rhythm section and barking guitar they hope to showcase the music that they love to play and share that love of the blues with many.

Josh and The guys will be performing Sunday Feb 28th at 12pm on the Downtowner Saloon Street Stage (No Cover) for more information on Josh “The Pitbull of Blues” Rowand please visit his website at www.thepitbullofblues.com

Joel DaSilva has blues running through his veins. Born and raised in his sweet home, Chicago, DaSilva hails from a musical family. His mother and father traveled throughout Brazil and Ukraine, his mother a singer and father accompanying her on guitar. His father passed away when he was 3, but Joel continues to channel that soulful energy in his manic and soulful live performances to this day. As soon as he was old enough to work, Joel took a job as a bar back in a blues joint where his older brother tended bar. The goal was to get closer to the music, immersing in the scene. Eventually, he was setting up equipment for touring bands and getting to know them in exchange for lessons from the masters and lessons in Music Business 101. By the age of 18, DaSilva joined his first band, Junior Drinkwater & the Thirstquenchers. He went on to play in jump blues, blues, psychobilly, and surf-oriented bands like The Regulators and the Hep Cat Boo Daddies before breaking out on his own as a solo artist.
