Do you know………The Significance of Numbers in Scripture (Part II: #5, #10, #6, #7 & #14)

#5 & #10 Of the 10 virgins, 5 were wise and 5 foolish (Mt. 25:1-2). 5 sparrows were sold for 2 farthings (Lk. 12:6); Dives (meaning “the rich man”) had 5 brothers (Lk. 16:28); the woman by the well had had 5 husbands (Jn. 4:18), and at the feeding of the 5,000 the lad had 5 loaves.

Aside from the Ten Commandments, there are a total of 603 other commandments, for a total of 613. 6 plus 1 plus 3 equals 10. We have 10 appendages on the ends of our hands and feet. So it is natural for 10 to be an im-portant number throughout the Bible. Noah was the 10th patriarch before the Flood. In the parable of Lk. 15:8 the woman possessed 10 coins, and in the parable of the 10 gold coins (Lk 19:11-27) there are 10 servants and 10 cities. Boaz picked out 10 elders (Ru. 4:2). There are 10 powers which cannot separate the believer from the love of God: “neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, not present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor any other creature…” (Rom. 8:38.) 10 sins exclude us from the kingdom of God: “neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor boy prostitutes, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor greedy, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor robbers…” (1 Cor. 6:10).

John 3:16 is the thesis of the entire Bible, its digits add up to 10. God promises not to destroy Sodom and Go-morrah if only 10 righteous people can be found in them. Jesus teaches with a total of 37 parables. (3+7=10). #6 The Bible uses the number 6 to indicate imperfection. The most well-known number in the Bible is, of course, 666. Satan’s spirit that control the two beasts. One is the Antichrist, who is the antithesis of God, and the other is the False Prophet, the antithesis of Jesus. As each of these entities is imperfect, it is represented by the number 6, whereas the Holy Trinity is 777. In the creation narrative God created man and woman on the 6th day (Gn. 1:27). 6 days were allotted to man for labor (Ex. 20:9; 23:12; 31:15; Lk. 13:14). A Hebrew servant had to serve for 6 years before he was freed. The number 6 is therefore closely associated with man. In Leviticus (25:3) “For six years you may sow your field, and for six years prune your vineyards, gathering in their produce.” #7 & #14 Seven has an eminent place among sacred numbers in the Scriptures, and is associated with completion, fulfil-ment and perfection, and 7 and 14 are inseparable throughout it. God is said in Revelation to have 7 Spirits, de-picted as 7 lamp stands. In the creation narrative God rested from his work on the 7th day, and sanctified it. This gave a pattern to the Jewish Sabbath on which man was to refrain from work (Ex. 20:10). Passover falls on the 14th day (7x2) of the first month where you are to eat unleavened bread for 7 days and “on the 7th day you shall hold a sacred assembly, and do no sort of work” (Nm 28:16-25). Isaiah’s prophecy of the coming of the Messi-ah becomes explicit at Chapter 7, verse 14, “Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son.” 14 is twice 7. There are 14 generations from Abraham to David, 14 from David to the Babylonian exile of the Jews, and 14 from there to Jesus. The sabbatical year (Lv. 25:2-6), and also to the year of jubilee, which followed 7 times 7 years (Lv. 25:8). The Feast of Unleavened Bread and the Feast of Tabernacles lasted 7 days (Ex. 12:15, 19; Nm. 29:12). The Day of Atonement was in the 7th month (Lv. 16:29), and 7 occurs frequently in connection with OT ritual, e.g. the sprinkling of bullock’s blood 7 times (Lv. 4:6) and the burnt-offering of 7 lambs (Nm. 28:11); the cleansed leper was sprinkled 7 times (Lv. 14:7), and Naaman had to dip 7 times in Jordan (2 Kgs. 5:10). Daily for seven days the priests shall offer a sin offering (Ez 43:25). Other references to be noted are: the mother of 7 sons (Jer. 15:9; 2Mc. 7:1.) and Elijah’s servant looked for rain 7 times a day (1 Kgs 18:43-44). The psalmist praised God 7 times a day (Ps. 119:164). Joshua led the Israelites, with the Ark of the Covenant, 7 times around Jericho until the walls fell down. “John the Baptist” has 14 letters. “Jesus the Christ” has 14 letters. The Tribu-lation will last 7 years. At the miraculous feeding of 4,000 from 7 loaves and a few fishes (Mk. 8:1-9), the 7 bas-ketsful collected afterwards may indicate that Jesus can satisfy completely. Mary Magdalene was completely cured of the 7 demons (Lk. 8:2). The dragon (Rev. 12:3) and the first beast (Rev. 13:1) has 7 heads. The seven angels (Rev. 17:1) hold seven bowls. In Revelation, there are 3 dispensations of God’s wrath, first 7 seals, then 7 trumpets, then 7 bowls of wrath.

The 22nd chapter of Revelation ends on the 21st verse (7x3), “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.”
