FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Martins,

The front page of the bulletin is a remarkable example of how memories stored and pictured will always be a source of joy and nostalgia. The beauty is not just that the 9/11 poster from our par-ish school reached ground zero, but even after 14 years, still the picture remains in one’s collec-tion and was brought to our attention by a wonderful person with no connection to the parish whatsoever. With her permission I have shared her email below. (email id: [email protected]). God Bless Patty Pratt!

Dear Sir or Madam, I was just trying to find a contact at the St. Martin de Porres School in Hazelwood online, but could not locate one. Perhaps the school is no longer there. You may find this of interest.... I was looking through personal photographs I took when I lived in the northeast and visited Ground Zero in New York City in January of 2002, just a few months following the 9/11 attacks. I ran across this photo I had taken of a sign that it looks like schoolchildren from St. Martin de Porres school had created. I am not sure if someone from your area brought it to NYC and hung it on the fence, or if it was sent to volunteers in the area, who hung it on your behalf.... but, 14 years later, I thought someone should know that it not only made it to NYC, but it hung on a fence that surrounded Ground Zero. I just happened to come along and snap a picture of it. Ironically, I am now a school teacher (4th grade) ….I look through the photos I took of Ground Zero every year around this time, and took a little extra time to look this particular photo over this year and thought I would share it back! :) Have a great day, Patty Pratt

This in fact ties into our own parish event of the pictorial directory. This weekend masses (Sept 19 and 20) will be the last weekend to sign up for the Pictorial Directory. Pictures will be taken for the final schedule, Sept 22 through 26.

And now a brief on my trip to India, my first as a citizen of the United States. Since my last trip to India was over a year and a half ago, I had to handle many ministry, family and personal obli-gations, including the first death anniversary of my brother who died last year. A cost we bear when we live thousands of miles away. I couldn’t go when he died and so had to preside over the first year anniversary mass, which officially concludes the year or mourning for the family. Until this year I would split my trip to India into two shorter stays but that was working out too expensive for me. Anyway, weighing the pros and cons, I might resume two shorter stays in the future.

In this recent trip as in earlier journeys to India and in keeping with the Archbishop’s directive, I made my one week personal retreat. And this year I made it in a predominantly Muslim area and there was a family retreat going on nearby too. And it was such a nice feeling to be alone, yet with families and the noise that go with it. On weekends, I preached in four parishes for the weekend, some with a focus on young people. As a former Redemptorist and as one born and lived in India for a major portion of my life, I do not have the habit of taking a relaxed vacation or a weekly day off. And it still continues. Yet two concerns caught my heart this time. One, the rapid expansion of the middle class income in India—as compared to our great coun-try—and the desertion of many Catholic families/youth to non-denominational churches, some painfully, from my own family too! Both of these have a deep relevance for us here. I had al-ready preached on the first in the past week and on the second concern, the same has been my concern for a long time. In fact this outreach would form a major part of our Vision 25 planning. So let us meet either on Oct 5 of Oct 18! Peace and Grace, Fr.RajPaul

NEIGHBOR TO NEIGHBOR

This is what was happening at N2N during the past month.

Helping Hands: We have been working mainly with odd jobs this month: finished installing a stair railing so a rear exit could be safely used; moved a sofa; cleaned air conditioner units, helped get a lawn mower fixed; cleaned one set of gutters; worked on one yard; and fixed a yard light that was a low voltage converted gas light which was acting intermittent-ly. WARNING: the insulators on these lamps can fail and the lamps will short out, destroying the transformer and putting 120 volts on the light pole. If a spring falls out when you change the bulb, turn the power OFF and replace the socket.

FYI: We want to pass on this information from Dan Halley regarding an organization called St. Louis HELP (Health Equipment Lending Pro-gram). It accepts donations of medical equipment, reconditions it and then loans it out. It is located in Olivette and can be reached at 314-567-4700 or stlhelp.org.

Martha's Kitchen: No requests this month.

Transportation: We have added two new riders, so now we have nine parishioners whom we take to weekend Masses on a regular basis. Rides were also provided to the following places: hardware store-1; grocery store -2; bank-1; and to pick up one prescription.

NOTE: If anyone needs a ride to have your picture taken for the parish directo-ry, give Linda Spencer a call at 314-731-0479.

LAST CHANCE FOR SIGN-UPS!

Following our 50 Years of worship here at St. Martin, strong emphasis is being placed on establishing goals to stay vibrant for the next 25 years! Every week, following our Profession Of Faith, we include a prayer to keep our parish vi-brant for the next 25 years! We all know there is strength in numbers and we can quote numbers based on parish records. But, who are we really? We are not numbers, but individuals and families who comprise a ‘Christian family’ that worship here at St. Martin de Porres. Participation in the pictorial directo-ry will allow us to confirm statistical numbers in addition to allowing each of us an opportunity to get to know and recognize one another no matter which Mass we attend. This is a major step in allowing us to become a closer Chris-tian family. Think of our high school yearbook. Twenty-five years from now, will they know or we remember you were here?

Sign-ups for our final photo sessions are before and after each Mass LAST CHANCE FOR PICTURES:

Tuesday, September 22, thru Friday, September 25, 1:00 P.M.-9:00 P.M. Saturday, September 26, 10:00 A.M.-5:00 P.M.

STOP MU FROM PROMOTING ABORTIONS!

The University of Missouri Health System has granted hospital privileges to abortion doctor Colleen McNicholas. This allows McNicholas, who does not live in Columbia, to perform abor-tions at Columbia Planned Parenthood. MU is a public univer-sity that draws students from families across the state of Mis-souri. Our tax dollars should not be used to support abortion. Mizzou needs to get out of the abortion business!
