At our Church weekend away at Cefn Lea in Wales, we had Matthew Ling teaching us about our identity as God’s people. One of the ideas he used was one of a tapestry in the cathedral of his hometown of Coven-try. The tapestry is the biggest in the world and shows Jesus Christ en-throned in heaven. The tapestry when viewed from a distance back looks balanced and harmonious, and it is upon closer inspection that you can see millions of threads that make up the colours and forms of the big picture! The identity of God and His Kingdom is exactly like that.

All of the Bible and God’s deal-ings with the human race have one overall focus, one grand obsession; ‘to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.’ (Ephesians 1:9). Jesus and His kingdom is what the whole of his-tory and all of eternity is about, and you and I, as part of the church have the privilege of being a crucial part of God’s big picture. It is ‘Christ in you, the hope of glory.’ (Colossians 1:27), that God wants to show off to the world and to the watching heavens. Two Sundays ago we heard an

Our Identity: The Big Picture apostle to New Life Church, Richard Anniss, remind us of our vision to ‘Make Jesus Famous’. That is to be worked out in every area of life in-cluding work, study, holidays, when we meet or fellowship; in all the de-tails of our lives which make up the big picture of who we are. We aren’t trying to achieve an ideal which is out of reach; by living every day sub-mitted to the Holy Spirit we will be led as sons of God into showing Je-sus off to everyone around us. At this time in New Life Church of change and growth, we must keep hold of the big picture. We are ‘in Christ’, which is the best position that anyone can be in! We are part of a world-wide Church which is being renewed and restored by the gifts of Christ (Ephesians 4:11) and by moves of the Holy Spirit’s power. A good illustration of succeed-ing during a time of change is found in the book of 2 Kings. As Elijah passed over his anointing as the main prophet in Israel to Elisha, the only way it would work was if Elisha LOOKED UP to heaven (2 Kings 2:10). Our identity is as a heavenly people, seated with Christ in heav-enly realms, fighting spiritual battles with spiritual weapons. Our vocation and success is in loving the lost and being passionate to make God’s city the praise of the earth, making Jesus famous, right here in Salford! Jesus Christ is the big picture, so let’s all fix our eyes on Him (Hebrews 12:2). Russ Bennett
