A dream, a journey, a legacy...
When I created the Miss Asian America Pageant in 1985, I had the intention of sharing my personal experience of evolving from a shy and sheltered young girl into an active community leader. As the youngest of five children to a widowed, immigrant mother, the idea of one day becoming a pageant queen and community leader seemed like a far-fetched dream.
As a child, I found inspiration in Dr. William Gee, founder of On Lok Senior Services, and his wife, Marian. Dr. and Mrs. Gee assisted my mother in navigating through language and cultural barriers. They helped her apply for widow’s benefits and frequently checked in on her young family. After winning the title of Miss Chinatown USA in 1981, I became a vocal member of the Asian American community. This new public image enabled me to carry forth my inspiration from the Gees, and I dedicated myself to APA Family Support Services, an invaluable program that assists young, immigrant mothers. My participation in pageantry gave me a voice and enabled me to make a difference in my community by giving back the assistance that others had given my family so many years before. A pageant changed my life.
I was empowered by my experience and determined to share my dream with other young women in the Asian community. My objective in creating the Miss Asian America Pageant was to showcase young, Asian American women in a quality production that represented their culture, intelligence, and talent. What we have today is an event much more dynamic and compelling than anything I had envisioned twenty-five years ago. From its humble beginnings in 1985, we have grown to have a national presence with contestants hailing from dozens of states and partnerships with several state pageants from Florida to Hawaii. As we look forward to new challenges and changes in the coming decade, it is important to reflect on the work and mission of the Miss Asian America Pageant. The first Asian American beauty queens swept away perceptions of the Confucian female and provided a modern and even American face to the public. The young women were symbols of the “coming of age” of Chinese Americans, attending anti-communism rallies during the Cold War and collecting funds for the first Asian American political candidates to run for office. The Miss Asian America Organization continues this mission of service, empowerment, and cultural appreciation. We are constantly reminded that our current success is a product of generations of fortitude. For the past twenty-five years, we have built a community that includes over 500 contestants and hundreds of hard working individuals who have put their valuable time, skills, and talent into producing the show you see tonight. Through these efforts, we have produced a program that benefits the Asian American community, and that is why we are proud to call ourselves the “Face of Asian America.”
Thank you for being here tonight in support of Asian American women. I wish to express my gratitude to the Miss Asian America Pageant community, especially to our sponsors and my loyal friends – staff and volunteers who make this event possible. You have come through brilliantly to continue our mission of inspiring the next generation of Asian America women and leaders.
Finally, on behalf of the Miss Asian America Pageant Family, we wish to congratulate our 2009-2010 Queen and Court: Amy Chanthaphavong, Victoria Pham, Kristine Law, Carolyn Fung, Tiffany Tam, Patherine Phattanathum, Serim Kang, Angel Chang, and Jane Hwang– thank you for being a part of our legacy and for carrying your titles with honor, grace, and beauty.

The Golden State is proud to host events that promote individual achievement. The winner of tonight’s event will represent her community as an ambassador of goodwill. Dear Friends,
On behalf of the City and County of San Francisco, I am pleased to recognize the 25th Annual Miss Asian America Pageant held on the evening of August 7th, 2010 in the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre in San Francisco.
I am also pleased to recognize the pageant’s goal to showcase young Asian American women from different Asian ethnic backgrounds in a high quality production that will best represent their culture, beauty, intelligence and talent. It provides a unique opportunity to the contestants to develop their interpersonal and leadership skills, friendships, teamwork and other invaluable experiences that will advance their self-confidence and spread goodwill throughout the Bay Area and beyond.
Especially, I would like to commend Rose Chung, the president of the pageant for her tireless efforts to make this event possible. I wish you a wonderful and successful pageant!

Steve Cho
Steve Cho is a Software Client Leader at IBM with over ten years of experience in the Information
Technology industry. Steve holds a Masters in Business Administration from UC Davis and
frequently mentors and counsels aspiring graduates. He is an avid fan of dragon boat racing
and supports raising awareness for physical fitness among Asian American youths. Steve is a
dynamic motivational speaker and enjoys devoting his time to charitable causes that benefit the Asian
American community in the Bay Area. His recent emcee appearances include the San
Francisco International Dragon Boat Festival, the Chinese New Year Spring Festival, the Legacy Through
Giving Fundraising Gala, and the Pure Blendz Spokesmodel Search. Steve is also an
active volunteer of the Miss Asian America Pageant (MAAP) and is honored to emcee the 25th
anniversary of MAAP.

HO Janelle Shoan
Janelle Shoan is a graduate of UC Berkeley, and has taught kindergarten in Cupertino for eight years.
Ms. Shoan is a member of the Superintendent-Teacher Advisory Committee, advising the Superintendent
on the needs of teachers and students at the school sites. Serving a largely Asian population, Ms. Shoan
is dedicated to creating a multicultural based curriculum in her classroom. An active member of an Asian
American church, Ms. Shoan formerly served as the Children’s
Ministry Director, directing plays and music programs that combined Asian culture with Christian themes.
Ms. Shoan enjoys volunteering at different community events and is an annual coordinator for Aki Matsuri
in Japantown, San Jose. Previously, Ms. Shoan volunteered for the Miss Asian America Pageant as a
Contestant Coordinator, Administrative Assistant, and Emcee. She is excited to return to the pageant in
celebration of its 25th year.

Twenty five years ago when this pageant was first envisaged by Rose Chung, the world was a stark place. In the United States, Vincent Chin, a Chinese American, was beaten to death with blows to the head from a baseball bat in June 1982 in Detroit, Michigan by two Chrysler plant workers angry with growing Japanese car sales. A pan-ethnic Asian American movement was thus born. Yet to this day, injustices remain and human rights violations persist. Asian Americans increasingly face invisible forms of discrimination and hate in a multitude of settings such as university admissions and high level corporate hiring according to Labor Department data.
We ask our contestants to transform the world, to achieve good and abandon false ideals that blind our collective moral compasses. And at the core of our mission, is a Commitment to Community, Social Responsibility, and Integrity.
The Miss Asian America Pageant, as an EPIC-approved International organization, follows the strict guidelines of our accrediting body and endorses a Uniform Code of Ethics and Rules of Censure. In addition, Miss Asian America Pageant officially employs a Fair, Standards-Based Point System. Adopting standards from the academic literature on education, Miss Asian America Pageant has identified various functions of a judge’s role of assigning points based on a fair and standards based system: to describe unambiguously the worth of the work accomplished; to stimulate good performance; to inform the judge about what contestants have and have not learned; and to select people for rewards.
At the Miss Asian America Pageant, we understand that judges bring in all sorts of perspectives, life backgrounds, career knowledge, and technical know-how to the table. Judges are invited to share these diverse backgrounds, but also, they are asked to follow this Fair, Standards-Based Point System, which involves the following:
• Judge on the basis of contestants’ demonstrated ability in each segment: Judges are instructed to base evaluations solely on performance in an individual segment, eliminating other considerations that are not specifically listed in the Judging Guidelines, such as performance in another segment, personality traits learned from the interview segment, or other non-relevant criteria.
• Clearly state judging procedures: Each contestant has been provided a copy of the same booklet provided to judges, including everything judges have been asked to look for in each segment. Contestants understand what and how they will be judged in each segment. Just as a teacher provides a rubric for students on how to get an “A” paper, we have also provided a rubric to contestants.
• Accurately calculating scores: The Miss Asian America Pageant is proud to have Mah & Associates, LLP, a certified public accounting, as our Official Tabulator.
We are proud of our commitment to social responsibility and our community and we hope you will share in our aspirations. I am often reminded of what I learned as a compliance analyst at Goldman Sachs: Our assets are our people, capital and reputation. “If any of these is ever diminished, the last is the most difficult to restore. We are dedicated to complying fully with the letter and spirit of the laws, rules and ethical principles that govern us. Our continued success depends upon unswerving adherence to this standard.”
Everything from our support of APA Family Support Services and Stanford University’s Asian Liver Center, to calculating our scores fairly, we are committed to instilling and passing on a culture of responsibility, because like 25 years ago, we remain in a stark place.
Our team of volunteers all sign up to adhere to the same standards of ethical behavior and the Miss Asian America Pageant strives to maintain the highest ethical standards in the industry. And today, we stand proud and humbled because of our community’s work and your support. Jeffrey Kwong is a PhD student in Political Science at University of California, San Diego studying cybersecurity and International Relations and a full time researcher with the UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation and the Northeast Asia Cooperation Dialogue (NEACD), a multilateral track two diplomatic forum for the Six-Party Talks. A credentialed California high school teacher in Social Sciences, English, Chinese language, and Korean language, Jeffrey is a graduate of Harvard University in government with minors in Korean and teacher education. He has been with the pageant since 2000.

The Miss Asian America Pageant has been an unexpected blessing in my life and an opportunity of a life time. I cannot even begin to articulate the past year without first recognizing the glory and graciousness of God. In 2009, I left the stage with an unexpected Queen title along with memories I will cherish for a life time and a wealth of self-confidence, albeit I had no idea the coming year was to be such an adventure. I have grown both spiritually and emotionally in profound ways. If I could boast of only one reason to be grateful for my reign, my personal growth alone would be enough to prove this experience priceless. However, I have many more reasons to be grateful. I had the privilege of traveling all over the United States and even abroad as a role model, a goodwill ambassador, and a leader in the Asian American community. As Miss Asian America, I participated in cultural festivities, fashion shows, award ceremonies, red carpet events and fundraised for numerous charities. At times, I was astonished by the truly remarkable people I came across at these events, prominent figures, politicians and Asian American leaders. During my reign, not only have I honed interview and public speaking skills to last a lifetime, but I have also learned invaluable networking and communication skills. They will be lessons I carry with me forever, but what mattered the most was the opportunity to touch the lives of young people, one of my greatest passions. Seeing the eyes of young children light up when you walk into a classroom and engaging in discussions about real issues they face on a daily basis is priceless. Inspiring a child to dream big, to pursue their gifts and talents is more than what I could have asked for. What I have learned is that Miss Asian America is more than a crown; it is an organization that enhances a young woman’s ability to dream. Being granted the opportunity to compete for and win the title of Miss Asian America has been nothing short of a dream come true. For this, I will always be indebted to the Miss Asian America volunteers, staff and Rose Chung! Thank you for giving me a platform to set in motion my dreams. I am honored to have been able to serve as Miss Asian America and thank you for supporting the empowerment of talented young women. I would also like to give a sincere “Thank you” from the bottom of my heart to my family and friends for their unconditional love and support and for accompanying me on this journey. Thank you mom and dad for everything, I would not have become the woman that I am now if it were not for your continuous love, encouragement, support, and wisdom. Maxime Eric Bonjean, MD, PhDDr. Maxime Bonjean, MD, PhD, is a National Institutes of Health-National Science Foundation Research Fellow at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and Institute for Neural Computation. A native of Belgium, Dr. Bonjean is a graduate of Université catholique de Louvain in Engineering and a graduate of Oxford University in medicine and surgery. A PhD in Neuroscience from University of California, San Diego, Dr. Bonjean conducts research in sleep and computational neuroscience at the Salk Institute, University of California, San Diego. In 2008, Dr. Bonjean was awarded the Marcel Linsman Prize, a triennial Belgian prize for excellence in the biomedical sciences and engineering. He has published in the areas of aviation technologies, sleep medicine and sleep disorders, and Parkinson’s disease. He was previously a lieutenant in the Belgium Armed Forces (Reserve).
Gerry DoveGerry Dove is Community Affairs Director of Clear Channel Radio. An outgoing, energetic, and dynamic presence on Bay Area stages and 98.1 KISS FM venues, he shares his deep love for R&B, funk, and jazz music in his many years in radio. He is active in the community, working with the NAACP, the EOYDC, and the Women of Excellence/Men Inc. In 2007, Gerry was named one of the 101 African-American Men Making a Difference in Our Community. He is also a supporter of many Bay Area organizations, including the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, the Friends of Faith, and the ASA Academy. He serves as the President of the Board of Directors for the East Oakland Youth Development Center (EOYDC), and is on the Advisory Committee for the Martin Luther King Jr. March and Rally Committee.
Haydar HabaHaydar Haba is a serial entrepreneur, innovator and an established expert in the telecommunications industry best known for founding IntelePeer, Telco 214 and TCI communications. At IntelePeer, he architected the Open Communications Platform revolutionizing the delivery of communications, enabling carriers, service providers and enterprises to access communication services from the Cloud. Mr. Haba has over 18 years experience in the communications industry. Prior to IntelePeer, Mr. Haba was Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Telco 214, an emerging leader in the international telecom peering market. Mr. Haba completed his PhD course work in Electrical Engineering and holds Bachelor of Science and Masters degrees from Florida Institute of Technology. His companies have won many awards for innovation from Red Herring, Always On, CODiE, Deloitte Technology Fast 50, and B/OSS.
Charles K. Lee, MD, FACSCharles K. Lee is a board certified plastic surgeon. An international leader in plastic surgery, lecturing in North America, Europe, and Asia, Dr. Lee has been a Visiting Professor to Seoul, Korea’s premier plastic surgery institutions. He is currently the Director of his Private Clinic at the L plastic surgery center in San Francisco, winning many top plastic surgeon awards and recognitions. Dr. Lee has also been privileged to be one of a few plastic surgeons who can care for breast cancer survivors requiring advanced microsurgical breast reconstruction. In addition to his own practice, he is active in education and public service as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery at UCSF Medical Center, the Chief of Microsurgery at St. Mary’s Medical Center, and a Consultant Specialist to the SF Giants Baseball Team and WebMD.
The Miss Asian America Pageant is often asked, “How do judges evaluate the contestants?” Judges
are asked to envision Miss Asian America as a person empathetic to others and
committed to a higher cause or ideal in the Asian American Community. Judges are instructed to
look for: a woman of beauty, elegance, and substance; a woman who sees Miss Asian
America as a role and responsibility and will be able to commit to her platform and social
service; an ambassador for the Asian American community; an advocate and a role model.

Jerry LeeJerry Lee is the Corporate Learning and Develop Training Manager at UPS, where he is responsible for local charitable grants, employee workplace giving and employee community volunteerism in the North California District which consists of 12,000 employees. In addition, he is the Vice Chairman of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which oversees the San Francisco Municipal Railway as well as the Department of Parking and Traffic. Active in the community, he is on the Board of Directors of Self Help for the Elderly, United Way of the Bay Area, and the San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade Planning Team. He has also previously served on the Board of Directors of Cameron House, Angel Island Immigrations Station Foundation, Wu Yee Children Services, and the Organization of Chinese Americans (San Francisco).
Jing LiJing Li is a All-China martial arts champion and Hollywood actress. Armed with a distinctive grace, power, and style in martial arts, Ms. Li was a member of China’s famed Beijing Wushu Team, and won the Wushu National Championships of China for seven consecutive years from 1991 to 1997. After arriving in the United States in 1998, she garnered further honors, becoming a four time NASKA Women’s Grand Champion and International Tai Chi Champion. After years of training under the guidance of renowned wushu master Wu Bin, Ms. Li is recognized today as one of the world’s greatest martial arts competitors. Michael LyMichael Ly is the Vice President and General Manager at Sugar Bowl Bakery, a multi-million dollar bakery that services the top retailers in the world. He is the second generation of the Ly Brothers who immigrated penniless to the United States from Vietnam in 1979 and founded Sugar Bowl Bakery in 1984. Today, Michael Ly works directly under CEO Andrew Ly and has expanded the company’s distribution in many supermarket chains, warehouse clubs, specialty stores, coffee chains nationally and to parts of Asia and Mexico. He oversees two main plants (120,000 total square feet) in Hayward and is planning for a third plant in the East Coast. A graduate of UCLA in Economics, Mr. Ly was previously at a startup biometric company for 5 years. Michael Ly is active in the Hayward business community, and serves as a board of director for the Hayward Chamber of Commerce.
Elsie McAteerElsie McAteer is Director of Sales and Marketing for the Events Department of San Francisco City Hall, producing over $1.5 million in revenues for the City and County of San Francisco annually. She has been a part of the City Hall family for the past eleven years. Born and raised in the Philippines, Elsie holds a with a Bachelor’s degree in Business from San Diego State University and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Redlands in Southern California. She has dedicated her life to public service, working previously at the United States Department of Labor for 14 years. Mrs. McAteer is an active member of the community, supporting a number of the non-profit organizations including 501 and Step in the Beat. As a former Miss Southern California Philippines-USA in 1989, she continues to support intercultural programs and pageants to this day. Mrs. McAteer is married to Patrick McAteer and has two caring children.
Kuo S. Ooi, MDDr. Kuo Ooi is a board certified in Internal Medicine and Sports Medicine. Co-owner of a large private practice, Rocklin Family Practice & Sports Medicine, and also the medical director for Active Care Physical Therapy, Dr. Ooi has served as a team physician for Ohio Wesleyan University and is currently the head team physician for Whitney High School Athletics in Rocklin, California. He has extensive experience in sporting events and has served as an event physician for international and national competitions. A graduate of University of Texas at Austin and Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Ooi completed his residency in combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the Indiana University Medical Center. He is an active half-marathon runner and 2nd degree black belt in Taekwondo.
Joyce Yan ZhangJoyce Zhang is a bank examiner for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. As part of the the Bank Supervision Group, she supervises and regulates financial institutions in the Second District and assesses the safety and soundness of domestic banking institutions and operations of foreign banking organizations in the District through financial analysis and surveillance and develops domestic and international supervisory policy. Born in Maryland and raised in Texas, Joyce graduated from Harvard University with a joint honors degree in government and economics. Of Mongolian Chinese descent, Joyce is active in the Asian American community of New England and New York and serves as the Public Service Chair of the Harvard Asian American Alumni Alliance. Joyce previously worked at the Department of Labor and in the US Embassy of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
