Attracting a myriad of cinema-goers at least three or four times a week, The Scala was a staple of the area at the height of the cinema craze.
Local actress Violet Carson, who played Ena Sharples in Coronation Street, was a resident pianist in the cinema, accompanying the silent movies before the advent of the “talkies” and Oscar winning actor Robert Donat was a regular visitor to The Scala during the 1920s.
When it closed, it was the third longest-running cinema in the country.

The new Scala development looks to pay homage to the iconic history of the cinema whilst creating a brand new landmark for the suburb of Withington.
