Opening in 1912, The Scala was only the third cinema to open in Britain. Combining old Hollywood glamour with Tudor Revival architec-ture, The Scala quickly became an iconic part of the Withington landscape.

Attracting a myriad of cinema-goers at least three or four times a week, The Scala was a staple of the area at the height of the cinema craze.

Local actress Violet Carson, who played Ena Sharples in Coronation Street, was a resident pianist in the cinema, accompanying the silent movies before the advent of the “talkies” and Oscar winning actor Robert Donat was a regular visitor to The Scala during the 1920s.

When it closed, it was the third longest-running cinema in the country.
