Texas 4-H is like a club for kids and teens ages 5-18, and it’s BIG! It’s the largest youth development program in Texas with more than 550,000 youth each year. No matter where you live or what you like to do, Texas 4-H has something that lets you be a better you! You may think 4-H is only for your friends with animals, but it’s so much more! You can do activities like shooting sports, food science, healthy living, robotics, fashion, and photography. Texas 4-H is part of Texas A&M ArgiLife Extension Service and the Texas A&M System. Founded in 1908, 4-H is the largest youth development program in Texas, reaching more than 550,000 youth each year. In 4-H, the activities are organized by topics and called ‘projects.’ All 4-H members must be enrolled in at least one project. When you choose a project, you will learn everything there is to know about that topic. You will participate in various hands-on activities, learn new skills, do community service, or even make speeches about your project. Browse the list of projects at https://texas4-h.tamu.edu/projects/ to see what you would like to do. How to choose your 4-H project: Select a project you like. Select a project that can be completed. Consider the money and time it will take. Can parents/guardians help? Consider the space and equipment that you have at home. A 4-H project should be fun, serve a purpose, and be worth the effort. Select only the number of projects you can complete. Contact your local county club to see which projects are offered where you live. Check out 4-H projects to see what looks fun to you. How to join 4-H Join for $25 or less! Texas 4-H is for kids of almost any age – grades K-2 can be in Clover Kids. From 3rd-12th grades(8 years old before September 1st), you can be in 4-H.

2018 4-H Food Show

The theme for the 2018 Food Show is “Fresh from the Farm”. This theme will allow participants the opportuni-ty to explore many aspects of fresh foods, physical activity, and the value of locally grown foods. Another as-pect to consider is the simpler life of the farm and the importance of fami-ly and working together. In addition, 4-H members can discuss the growing season their dish is associated with: late spring and early summer, high summer, and early fall. As well as,

discussing where the ingredients for their dish were grown, especially if pur-chased from a local producer or farmers market or possibly harvested from their own garden. Complete rules and guidelines for Food Show and other 4-H contest will be released late September.

Christian Cumpian of La Parita 4-H had the extraordinary opportunity to travel with other Texas 4-H members and faculty on an international study tour to New Zealand and Australia. 4-H global experiences are organized by faculty so that members can be exposed to other cultures and languages, and be willing to accept all people with different customs and values. Interaction with people from other countries allows them to explore various cultural norms and learn about their customs. Highlights of the tour included the Mt. Ngongotaha Gondola, Glowworm Grotto, New Zealand’s Agrodome, the Sydney Opera House tour, and a day at Bondi Beach; all fascinating adventures! The group was also lead on a full day excursion at the Tobruk Sheep Ranch, emphasizing the importance of the sheep industry in the region and the Featherdale Wildlife sanctuary where they interacted with many native animals like kangaroos and koalas. But the pinnacle of Christian’s trip was his experience with the Maori, the indige-nous Polynesians of New Zealand. “We visited a Maori history center,” said Christian. “There, we saw amazing mud lakes and geysers and the native bird the kiwi who is very protected. I also visited a wood carving and weaving school. Later that night we had a Maori style dinner where we were treated to a great show and the best part was I got to do the haka, which is an ancient war dance. My favorite rugby team, the All Blacks, do it at every game.” Christian would like to express his most sincere gratitude to his family and friends who supported him in this unforgettable experience. He would also like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the faculty at Texas 4-H who made the trip possible. Mom would like to give a shout out to Dr. Melinda Garcia, Extension Program Specialist in Bexar County, who, without hesitation, took Christian under her wing. #4HFamily #4HGrowsHere #Texas4H #4HGrown #TrueLeaders
