A SUMMER OF SUMPTUOUS JAZZThe 37th edition of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival starts on Friday, July 3, and offers 10 days of enjoyable jazz fest throughout Copenhagen and Frederiksberg. With 100 venues and more than 1250 concerts a day, Copenhagen Jazz Festival is one of Europe’s largest jazz events.
The Festival exhibits many top international names, but at the same time manages to reflect the vivid Copenhagen jazz scene that unfolds the genre and offers improvisation, modern jazz, swing – and countless offshoots of jazz as an art form. In other words, there are plenty of live experiences for all: Geeks and jazz newbies; chil-dren, youth and older generations; purists, party animals or avant-garde junkies.
Festival boss, Kenneth Hansen, says that this year’s Festival is quite special because the or-ganisers have managed to land some really huge names, but have also included a lot of underground stuff. “Themes like Jazz Remixed, Urban World Nights and two nights with one of the hippest Nordic projects; Fire! Orchestra, are some of the exciting experiences to look out for this year,” enthuses Hansen. For Hansen, Jazz and the CJF, is all about the free approach to music and expression, largely reliant on the mo-
ment where the musicians meet and interact with their audience. Making Festivals such as CJF so integral to what jazz music is all about.
HEADLINE ACTS TO LOOK OUT FORFor a more comprehensive programme and list of highlights, see page 22 of this Supplement or get your hands on a hard copy available at all the festival’s 100 venues, in Politiken’s Boghal, and at selected libraries and cafés. Hansen how-ever suggests the following must-see concerts: The duo encounter between Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea at DR Koncerthuset, although now sold out, the Brazilian night with Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil and the colourful collab-oration between Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga...!
GETTING FROM VENUE-TO-VENUEAlthough Copenhagen is a small city and easy to get around, whether you are travelling by foot, by bike or by the city’s widespread public trans-port system, during Copenhagen Jazz Festival its organisers will make it even easier.
In collaboration with DOT – the traffic compa-nies of the capital – Copenhagen Jazz Festival offers an Event Ticket that lets you travel freely to and from the Festival’s more than 100 venues. The Event Ticket is bought online and delivered
directly to your phone as a SMS. The ticket is
valid for 12 hours and comes in two versions:
A day ticket valid from 10 AM – 10 PM and an
evening ticket valid from 4 PM – 4 AM. The tick-
et costs 30 DKK for zones 1-4 (covering Copen-
hagen including the airport) and 60 DKK for all
zones (covering the whole capital region). The
tickets allows you to travel with two kids young-
er than 12 years free of charge.

THE JAZZ CAPITAL OF EUROPEThe Copenhagen Jazz Festival is the annual fire-
works of the Danish Jazz scene and is also one
of the most respected international jazz festivals
in Europe, this according to Festival Manager
Kenneth Hansen. “It’s very unique compared to
most other festivals because it interacts with the
city in so many ways. It’s impossible not to run
into the festival one way or the other if one is in
town when it all goes down, the more than 1200
concerts and approximately 100 venues, make
the festival pretty visible,” he says.
Kjeld Frandsen, a journalist, music critic and
jazz editor, and has since 1986 been attached
to Berlingske Tidende, says that in addition to
Copenhagen being the Danish capital, it is also
for Jazz music. “It is here that there are the most
important clubs and the most impressive musi-
cians - and the Rhytmic Music Conservatory is
SHOWCASING THE CITY THROUGH MUSIC.

an important place for new talents, new combinations and new ide-
as. A lot of young European musicians want to study and live here.
There is no doubt that Copenhagen is important for the European
Jazz scene,” he explains.
Aside from the major yearly event, the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Co-
penhagen has a steep history and tradition for jazz, which is evident
throughout the year in the city. The music is not just a summer event,
and extends throughout winter with around 50 jazz concerts every
week, explains Frandsen.
ICONIC VENUESFrandsen highlights some of the most historic venues in the city, say-
ing the most famous is Jazzhus Montmartre, where a lot of great
international musicians played in the sixties. The place re-opened
at the original address in 2010 and still - in the tradition - presents
high quality jazz. “Jazzhouse - formerly known as Copenhagen Jazz
House - opened in 1991 to present new Danish and International jazz.
Today it presents mostly fusion and avant-garde. Huset (the House)
in Magstræde has since the 1970s had several scenes, and the club
Paradise Jazz opened here in 1998, which presents modern - mostly
Danish Jazz are just a few of the more prominent venues the city has
to offer.”
THE COPENHAGEN SOUNDThe jazz scene in Copenhagen is still influenced by the American/
Montmartre tradition, which means that even avant-garde musicians
know traditions like the standards (The Great American Song Book).
However, Frandsen says that it is also influenced by Scandinavian
music traditions - the so-called Nordic Sound. But all kinds of jazz
are represented, and there are many bands where fine veterans meet
young comets.
And, as for this year’s Festival, Frandsen says just pick your place and
your style – there is something to cater for everyone’s tastes!
Jazzhus Montmartre, La Fontaine and
Jazzhouse are three historic but quite different
jazz venues, according to CJF organiser Kenneth
Hansen. “Jazzhouse is the place where the jazz
idiom is being challenged and where artists can
experiment and explore new directions. Jazzhus
Montmartre is more like a classic jazz venue, but
the quality is very high. La Fontaine is famous
for the Sunday night jams and is a place where
the musicians and the audience truly interact
because the place is so intimate! Other, just as
worthy venues include Jazzcup, Paradise Jazz
and Krudttønden,” he says. Let’s take a look...
JAZZHUS MONTMARTREJazzhus Montmartre is the historic jazz hotspot
of Copenhagen, presenting world class live jazz
at the original intimate venue where the famous
club started back in 1959 at Store Regnegade
19A in the heart of the Danish capital.
From 1959-1976, the club made jazz history as
the European home for jazz giants Dexter Gor-
don, Ben Webster, Stan Getz, Kenny Drew and
many other masters of the 1960’s and 70’s. A
large group of top artists all moved to Copenha-
gen because of the special atmosphere of Mont-
martre, as the club got under their skin with a
special ambiance and an extraordinary crowd.
The re-opening of the historic venue in May
2010 was initiated by serial entrepreneur, jour-
nalist and media executive Rune Bech togeth-
er with jazz pianist Niels Lan Doky. The new
Jazzhus Montmartre quickly became a Copen-
hagen top attraction again. The New York Times
included Montmartre on its much-hyped list of
must-see-places in the city under the headline
“Rebirth Of Cool”.
LA FONTAINELa Fontaine is the oldest jazz venue in Copenha-
gen and is legendary for its nightly jam sessions.
Cosy and intimate, Copenhagen’s jazz club vet-
eran is a great spot to catch emerging home-
grown musicians and the occasional big name.
If you’re an aspiring jazz star, hang around until
late, when the stage is thrown open to songbirds
in the audience.
JAZZCUPJazzcup - innovation in Copenhagen jazzmiljø -
is a combined CD shop, café and music venue.

15:30 to 19:00, and on Saturday afternoon from
14:30 to 18:00.
PARADISE JAZZParadise Jazz has for 15 years conducted about
90 concerts a year, ranging from Swing, Bebop,
Brazilian inspired to the more modern, always
with the best Danish and sometimes foreign acts.
When others have closed, Paradise Jazz remains
open in house-KBH first floor, every Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday from mid-January
to the end of April, during the Copenhagen Jazz
Festival and from mid-September to mid-De-
cember. Once a month is the Monday Night Big
Band, on the last Monday of the month.
KRUDTTØNDENKrudttønden was established on the basis of a
number of artists and their initiatives. The vi-
sion of a cultural mecca in Østerbro, theater,
workshops, concerts, lectures and other cultural
events, was realised in 1990 when, from the root
zone level and with a number of established art-
ists contributing, managed to win political recog-
nition for the project and its vision. Krudttønden
today is a music scene, a theatre and a culture
café. The venue’s core competence is to provide
intimate experiences within a very varied and
versatile repertoire, including with the objective
of bridging the gap between development and
the professional artists.
THE JAZZHOUSE DEBATEJazzhouse is a modern concert hall in Copen-
hagen: A house that creates space for daring
and immersion in the diversity of jazz music.
According to Jazzhouses’ Andreas Rasmussen,
who himself loves the freedom of jazz, says that
Jazzhouse has positioned itself firmly on what
he’d like to call the fringes of jazz, improvisation
and experimental music. “We don’t feel that for-
malised repetition of agreed-upon jazz tradition
is doing the genre any services. Instead we feel
that the heart of jazz is to be in perpetual mo-
tion, to walk and cross boundaries between gen-
res, modes of expression and artistic strategies,”
he explains.
The venue attracts some of the biggest interna-
tional profiles, and the best of Denmark’s fertile
music scene – artists who view jazz as inspira-
tion rather than as a genre straitjacket. Modern
jazz enthusiasts will find plenty of good jazz, but
also a host of artists who move across styles;
artists who wish to create musical images of the
time we live in. To this, Rasmussen says that jazz
is not classical music, and that it should not be
treated as a piece in a museum. “At Jazzhouse,
we try to curate artists who are attempting to
expand the definition of jazz. Sometimes, of
course, this means that we stray very far from
any recognisable form of jazz, but we maintain
that even these artists have a deep connection
to the genre’s history,” he says.
Headliners to look out for at Jazzhouse during
this year’s Copenhagen Jazz Festival, include;
Ambrose Akinmusire, Fire! Orchestra and Vijay
Iyer. One of the Danish acts Rasmussen says
to look out for is August Rosenbaum. “He’s a
young pianist who is looking to avant-garde and
electro-acoustical composition for inspiration,
and he has curated the three-part line-up, called
Omen I-III, on the opening night of the festival.
This is Next Level stuff,” Rasmussen enthuses.
CONTEMPORARY JAZZ IN COPENHAGENJazz is today a very broad genre that covers a
lot of different musical expressions and experi-
mental approaches. And it is this, which venues
in Copenhagen, such as Jazzhouse and Koncert-
kirken aim to capture and promote through their
concerts. Björn Ross from Koncertkirken, feels
that contemporary jazz covers everything from
“pop” to “sound art” and experimental stuff. “It’s
very much happening “now” and it is extremely
creative and inspiring to take part in,” he says.
Rasmussen says that Copenhagen in particular
has a very interesting up-and-coming jazz and
improvisation scene. Copenhagen has become
extremely important in the contemporary (and
traditional) international jazz scene. Not only is
CJF one of the biggest and oldest festivals when
it comes to jazz, but Copenhagen also has a very
good reputation for its creative young scene and
a very good school - RMC - were young musi-
cians are allowed to experiment and supported
in their search for new approaches to rhythmical
music.
The diversity, broadness and variety in expres-
sions and approaches to Jazz music are evident
in the Copenhagen scene. “What I especially like
about it, is how unconventional thinking and a
certain disregard for genres is prevalent espe-8

cially among younger musicians and collectives
such as Yoyooyoy and Barefoot Records. The
ideal again is freedom of expression as well of
a growing fascination with freedom of organiza-
tion, in the way that these musicians try to es-
tablish labels and constellations of players that
are endlessly mutable. In other words, people
have discovered that jazz and improvisation are
powerful means of expression,” says Rasmus-
sen.
The CJF is instrumental in renewing the percep-
tion of jazz in contemporary circles, as a festi-
val is huge and covers all niches of jazz. “Even
though it still focuses on big names and inter-
national artists, we see that the support for new
approaches and local upcoming artists is very
strong and positive, and that the festival as
such is clearly conscious about the importance
and necessity for renewal in the field of jazz,”
explains Ross.
This year the Copenhagen Jazz Festival once again welcomes one of jazz history’s greatest bassists,
Gary Peacock, to intimate venue The Standard. As a member of two of jazz history’s most legendary
and iconic piano trios, the Bill Evans Trio and the Keith Jarrett Trio – Gary Peacock is of course on the
wish list of nearly every pianist, most of whom can only dream of playing with him as he is known to
be extremely selective in his choices of musical associates.
For decades, Danish audiences have only been able to hear him with the Keith Jarrett Trio at large
concert halls such as The Opera and Tivoli Concert Hall. However, he has had a long standing rela-

tionship with pianist Niels Lan Doky, that since
1989, has yielded several recordings (Close En-counter Vol. 1 & 2 and Manhattan Portrait) as well
as performances at leading venues and festivals
in the USA and Europe (Village Vanguard, North
See Jazz Festival, Kongsberg Jazz Festival, Jazz
at Lincoln Center etc). This will be the second
time that Gary Peacock visits The Standard in
Copenhagen. Don’t miss a very rare opportunity
to hear this American jazz great in an intimate
club setting.
Veteran drummer Alvin Queen and Niels Lan
Doky also go way back: Alvin Queen played on
NLD’s debut album in 1986 Here or There which
also featured Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen
and was also the drummer on NLD’s first tour
of Japan in 1988 and many other projects. They
are today both members of the Oscar Peterson
Legacy Quartet with guitarist Ulf Wakenius and
bassist Dave Young. Originally from New York,
Alvin Queen built a name for himself as the
drummer of the Horace Silver Quintet (alongside
other exciting sidemen contemporaries such as
Mike Brecker, Randy Brecker, Tom Harrell and
Bob Berg) and he has performed with a who’s-
who in jazz, including George Benson, Nina Si-
mone, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie and numerous
others. And for many years he was the drummer
in the final edition of the Oscar Peterson Quartet
before the passing of O.P.
Niels Lan Doky has had one of the most exten-
sive and unusual careers ever seen in music. His
professional career started already at age 13,
and he was only 15 when began playing with
American jazz legends Thad Jones and Ernie
Wilkins. Today at the age of 51, he has released
38 albums under his own name, has collabo-
rated with the greatest artists in jazz, and has
won countless awards and accolades around the
world. He has also occasionally devoted time
to parallel careers as a film director, producer,
author and speaker. After three decades of ab-
sence where he has lived respectively in Boston,
New York and Paris, he is now back in Denmark
where he has opened not less than two jazz
clubs in the capital of Copenhagen, the reopened
Jazzhus Montmartre, which he launched in 2010
and The Standard, which he opened in 2013 with
Claus Meyer and others.

CHURCH CONCERTS: THE NEW HOME OF THE AVANT-GARDE IN COPENHAGEN.
CONCERT CHURCH IN DENMARKBlågårds Church in the heart of Nørrebro, is Den-
mark’s first concert Church, which can be trans-
formed into a unique concert space. Koncertkirk-
en is used by classical and rhythmic musicians,
theatre groups as well as many other types of
performances and events. The Church venue
opened its doors for concerts in October 2009 on
the initiative of Paul Opstrup, manager of Liter-
atutHaus and Björn Ross, artistic director of the
Copenhagen Renaissance Music Festival. Since
then it has become a popular cultural destina-
tion for a diverse audience of local, national and
international music lovers in close contact with
Danish and international musicians and artists.
In the period October 2009 - May 2014, the
church has held approximately 250 scheduled
events within a variety of genres, including cho-
ral and organ recitals, Baroque, the Renaissance
and medieval music, world music, crossover, con-
temporary music, modern classical music, sym-
phonic music, opera, rock, klezmer, jazz, sound
art, electronic music, improvised music, cabaret,
lieder, literature, image - and intercultural con-

JAZZ ATCHURCH!
Artistic director for Koncertkirken, Björn Ross,
says that the church has successfully hosted the
Copenhagen Jazz Festival since 2010, and that
this has resulted in other successful projects.
“Last year we started to curate and produce our
own full festival series, including both young and
upcoming artists and internationally renowned
Danish artists within free and experimental jazz.
We also have started to book international art-
ists,” he explains.
So, for both a unique and avant-garde experience
of jazz music, it is highly recommended that you
visit the Koncertkirken during this year’s Festival…
CATBIRD is a band from Copenhagen. After
making three very different albums, they are
now a trio, with Bjarke Falgren on all sorts of
string instruments, Frank Hasselstroem on keys,
drums, horns and electronic, and singer Billie
Koppel. After making the rock album Sweet Cry (2011), Catbird are returning to a more dreamy
and poetic sound, which one could hear on the
album Among Us (2008).
Catbird’s music and Billie Koppel’s unique vo-cals, stands today as a crossover between the acoustic and electronic. Catbird uses both acous-tic and electronic instruments, and colours it all with echo pedals and samples. The dreamy and poetic sound gives one the feeling of being on a journey in a cinematic universe. Now that they are a trio, the repertoire is a mixture of brand new compositions and songs from the previous albums in new arrangements. Catbird has pre-viously been nominated for several Grammy awards (including “Best Singer” and “Best Pro-ducer”) and also for the Danish Radio talent P3 prize.
‘The Community presents’ is an OPEN AIR festi-val that takes place every day 5pm-7pm during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 3-11 July 2015. One of the things The Community stands for is new meetings between new people and this is one of these exciting meetings. ALL LIVES MATTER is a brand new freely improvised collective created especially for this concert, in fact it is a band that never played together before! It consists of five internationally recognised improvisers who will take you out of our orbit. Come improvise with us at the community open session!

Cowbell is a music business that releases mu-
sic, book concerts and lectures, and holds two
annual Jazz Festivals, which every year feature
some of the world’s greatest international art-
ists. Cowbell also works together with a num-
ber of public and private businesses around the
world to create unique musical events.
Cowbell creates musical experiences of the high-
est quality for a wide audience, and is owned
by the Danish award-winning saxophonist and
composer Benjamin Koppel, who was in 2011 ap-
pointed knight of culture (Chevalier de L’Ordre
des Arts et des Lettres) by the French Minister
of Culture.
Cowbell started back in 2000 as Benjamin
Koppel’s independent record label. Back then
it was revolutionary to start your own record
label. Through the years, Cowbell has released
about 100 albums with some of the world’s most
prominent and leading musicians in the genres
Jazz, Classical Music, Electronica, Hip-hop, Pop,
Soul, World and Crossover – often in unique mu-
sical ensembles put together to fit the occasion.
Today Cowbell is much more than a record la-
bel and still doesn’t have any musical prejudice
or boundaries: “We are always looking for the
good music, which can happen in any kind of
genre-mixes and -constellations, in meetings
with different nationalities, generations and in-
spirations,” says owner Benjamin Koppel.
Cowbell works together with a number of big
and small Danish businesses and cultural insti-
tutions that think like us. Cowbell collaborates
with the Copenhagen Jazz Festival and arranges
two annual independent sub-festivals, Summer
Jazz and Winter Jazz, during Copenhagen Jazz
Festival. Summer Jazz & Winter Jazz focus on
genre-mix and unique artistic compositions with
a number of the world’s most critical acclaimed
musicians.
CREATING UNIQUE MUSICAL EXPERIENCES.Advertorial
For over half a century, piano legends Herbie
Hancock and Chick Corea have been blazing
their own paths of artistic innovation on the
keyboard. From the great Miles Davis bands of
the 60s, to the stadium-filling, genre-shattering
Headhunters and Return to Forever of the 70s,
to their unparalleled, award-winning careers
ever since. Hancock and Corea are among the
most important influences on jazz (and beyond)
of our time. In a rare and historic duo perfor-
mance, jazz royalty will reign on the Copenha-
gen Jazz Festival 2015 as they come together for
a very special evening of music.
Born a year apart, both Corea and Hancock
came to the attention of the jazz world through
Blue Note sessions in the early 60s, worked ex-
tensively with Miles Davis, and were among the
architects of jazz, rock, and funk fusion in the
70s. Equally distinguished as pianists, bandlead-
ers and composers, these titans of music have
received multiples of every honour that can be
bestowed on a jazz musician. From avant-gar-
de to bebop, from hard hitting fusion to forays
into classical, these two NEA Jazz Masters have
touched an astonishing number of musical bases
while maintaining a standard of excellence that
is unparalleled. Don’t miss this extremely rare
and intimate duo appearance, which pays hom-
age to their ground-breaking tour and classic
live albums of the late 70s.
PERFORMANCES THAT YOU SIMPLY CANNOT MISS, FROM JAZZ LEGENDS TO GLOBAL SUPERSTARS.

THE BIG THREE AT CJF 2015
Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil - An exclusive
Copenhagen Jazz Festival concert in the acoustic
gem, DR Concert Hall – and a very rare reunion
of two of Brazil’s biggest and most charismatic
singers and songwriters.
Back in the 1960s, Gil and Caetano were two of
Brazil’s biggest pop stars, and leading lights of
the provocative Tropicalia movement. Two years
later, they were both in exile in Europe, and jam-
ming around the local scene in London. Following
imprisonment and house arrest by the then Bra-
zilian government, and their time in the city in-
fluenced Brazilian music and Pop music for ever.
Although both artists have individually filled con-
certs halls worldwide in the intervening years, to
have them play together at all at the Copenhagen
Jazz Festival prominent Concert Hall Events is a
real occasion – not only because of the history,
but because these are two artists who continue to
create music of genuine originality, that commu-
nicates directly with the heart and the soul.
Come and hear how these two American super-
stars interpret jazz standards, live in Copenha-
gen! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity when
Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, under the open
sky in Tivoli, give one of their very few shows.
The stage is set for a spectacular evening, sea-
soned with the two iconic singers’ very special
musical touches when interpreting classics like
Anything Goes, I Will not Dance and Sophisticated Lady.
Tony Bennett has sung duets with many in-
teresting female voices during his career, but it
struck sparks when he in 2011 went into the stu-
dio with Lady Gaga to record The Lady is a Tramp.
The couple agreed to continue the good cooper-
ation and the idea of a whole album of classic
jazz standards took shape the following year.
It was for the album Cheek to Cheek, who went
straight to No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 and
thus did 88-year-old Tony Bennett to the oldest
artist ever at the top of the charts. Moreover, it
was Lady Gaga’s third top-ranking in just three
years.

SØNDERMARKEN @ FREDERIKSBERGJazz for Kids is one of the Festival’s oldest traditions, and this year returns
to Frederiksberg, with five days of jazz in all shapes and sizes for kids
and their parents. For more than 25 years, Copenhagen Jazz Festival has
arranged jazz concerts for kids. Throughout the years, the many different
concerts have developed into an actual theme – Jazz for Kids – presenting
jazz of the highest quality for kids and their parents. The performing artists
are all professionals, imparting jazz by involving all senses through play,
dance, storytelling and art.
“It’s an open-air festival within the festival where different bands special-
ised in playing for children are presented in a nice park during the day-
time. It’s free and has become quite popular,” explains Festival Manager
Kenneth Hansen. This year Jazz for Kids will take place predominantly at
Søndermarken, at Frederiksberg, a garden-like park attached to the Fred-
eriksberg Palace. Here are two events to take note of this year:
BØRNEJAZZKLUBBENChildren’s Jazz Club is a musical society that started in 2004 in Ingolfs Kaf-
fbar on Amager. Over the years, we have worked on spreading quality live
concerts for children and organises in Greater Copenhagen and Odense.
The concerts are grouped in Little Ears concerts for 0-3 year olds and chil-
dren Jazz Concerts for the approximately 2-8 year olds. The people behind
the Children’s Jazz Club is driven by the desire to give the little ones some
good experiences with live music provided by professional musicians. This
year, BørneJazzKlubben will present several concerts at CJF. All concerts

Acoustic and digital in perfect synergy
A Yamaha TransAcoustic piano is a regular acoustic piano with strings that have
a few additional features beyond the ordinary. The instrument has the Yamaha
Silent function that makes it possible to practise while wearing headphones so
that the piano cannot be heard by others in the room.
TransAcoustic technology allows the soundboard to act as a loudspeaker
for all sound, both acoustic and digital. You can play using one of the digital
instrument sounds and use the soundboard as a speaker, and you can also
control the volume. You can also combine the acoustic piano sound with the
sound of a digital instrument and create unique soundscapes, all rendered by a
vibrating soundboard. You have to hear it to believe it.
