Your true identity remains anonymous, why?

Well, I guess that’s a street art thing really. Also, you get more of an honest

perspective from people if they don’t know who the artist is. I suppose more

importantly, I remain anonymous because why would I want to associate

myself with this s**t!?

When did you start drawing your lovable robots and how have things

progressed for you?It all started whilst wandering around Truro one day. The idea fell into my mind and

the rest is history really. Things since then have rocketed beyond what I could of ever

imagined.

We hear Banksy is a fan of your work – tell us more.

Yes, he is a fan. I’ve had a number of emails from him expressing an interest in my

work. I am in regular talks with people he’s associated with.

Any more famous fans?Yes, I’ve acquired a few along the way. The French street artist Space Invader (He’s

now a close friend & we talk often), Hollywood actress Daryl Hannah, Smirnoff Drinks

Co., Neff Clothing, pro surfer Matt Archbold & of course, Banksy.

What have you got going on at the moment?

I have an exhibition at London’s Brick Lane Gallery. After this I’m off to either NY or

LA, then it’s on to Las Vegas for a meeting with some influential people. I am hoping

to get another exhibition here though before I jet off.

What are your long-term goals and plans?

That much I haven’t decided on yet. To continue with my art would be great, spread

the word of Bot. Oh, and I’d like a new surfboard.

GOING VERTICAL: THE SHORTBOARD REVOLUTION Going Vertical is one of the most epic documentary films to date; questioning one of surfing’s greatest mysteries of who started the Shortboard revolution in the 60s. Going Vertical is the search to unravel surfing’s great mystery… who started the Shortboard Revolution? The age long question of Californians or Hawaains? Or maybe the Australian legend and board designer that is Bob McTavish. The debate still rages across the Pacific - who really lit the fuse of this surfing revolution during the tumultuous 1967 ‘summer of love’ that turned the sport, literally, upside down. The newly-released DVD features extraordinary archive footage of surf legends from the past four decades as well as the hottest surfers today; it has been said ‘Going Vertical, is not your usual surfing film. Going vertical doesn’t just impress with visuals; with music from Pearl Jam, Powderfinger, Manfred Man, and Thunderclap Newman this beauty of a DVD will shape views of the Shortboard revolution for surfers. The film will be released on DVD on the August 27 – win your copy over at www.247magazine.co.uk - we’ve got two to give away! See www.goingvertical.info

FLOATING ARTIC ISLAND COMES TO THE SOUTH WEST Nowhereisland is an island from the Arctic on a journey to South West England. As it made this epic journey, it travelled through international waters, whereupon it became the world’s newest nation with citizenship open to all called Nowhereisland! The first port of call for the floating land mass was Weymouth on July 25 for the sailing events of the 2012 Olympic Games, from here the Island is now moving around the ports of the South West, eventually ending in Bristol on the September 9. This innovative and slightly crazy plan formed by Artist Alex Hartley has caught the imagination of thousands of people across the world. Over 6400 people around the world have already signed up to be citizens, contributing to the online constitution and responding to the year-long Resident Thinkers programme. Nowhereisland is a Situations project led by artist Alex Hartley, one of 12 Artist Taking the Lead projects for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad funded by Arts Council England. Be sure not to miss this crazy, intriguing and beautiful piece of art. See www.nowhereisland.org

DANCE ACADEMY OWNER VOWS TO REOPEN VENUEPlymouth’s Dance Academy owner, Manoucehr Bahmanzadeh, was freed from jail at the end of last month, after serving nearly half of a nine year sentence for allowing his Union Street nightclub to be used to sell drugs and says he wants to bring the club back to life as soon as possible. The large Grade II listed building on Union St has been closed since police raided it in May 2006 and it has been deteriorating ever since, but it hasn’t worsened to the condition it was in when Manoucehr originally brought it when it had no roof. In it’s clubbing heyday the Dance Academy was crowned ‘Club of the Year’, for the West region, by Mixmag (2004). It boasted room for 1,300 clubbers, seven bars, two rooms, three balconies and welcomed the likes of Carl Cox, Judge Jules, Lisa Lashes, Roni Size, Grandmaster Flash and Sasha to popular nights such as Eyecon and Legends of the Dark Black. Fingers crossed it comes back to life soon.

DJ FRESHYou can’t go anywhere without hearing your track ‘Hot Right now’ featuring Rita ora – it’s a real summer anthem – did you write it with ora in mind? Yes! Rita has this incredible energy and she’s obviously a fantastic singer. I wanted to work with someone different – not the usual run of vocalists, and for me it was all about the voice – and Rita delivered an amazing vocal. She’s exactly the kind of artist that a producer wants to work with and we had great fun in the studio.

‘Hot Right now’ is comparably more pop that drum n bass – it’s gone down a storm with the hardcore too though – is this something you were apprehensive about and can we expect more tunes in this slightly more mainstream genre? I’ve always wanted to push things forward, and for me it’s just something different in terms of direction. What I wanted was something that had a strong, British feel to it, something that represents the musical mix that we’re lucky enough to have in the UK.

Is pushing boundaries in music something you have always been about? Yes, definitely. I’ve never wanted to stand still. I’m really excited about making music and I feel like I’m no longer holding back. Nextlevelism has the kind of mix that represents where my head’s at right now – drum n bass, hip hop, rock, pop – all filtered through my sound.

How did the collaboration with Dizzee Rascal come about for the latest single? He was someone I really wanted to work with so we approached him with the instrumental to see if he’d want to rap on it. He came back straight away and said yes. Delivered a great vocal and that was that. One of the most down to earth guys I’ve worked with and one of the hardest grafters. We’re working on something else at the moment…

Your third studio album, ‘Nextlevelism’, is out in two months time and your guests on the album read like the who’s who of the music industry with Dizzee Rascal, Professor Green and The Fray, Rizzle Kicks, Ms Dynamite, Juliette Lewis, Adam F & Michael Warren, Liam Bailey, Ayah Marar, Sian Evans, Fleur and of course Rita ora all making an appearance – is there anyone you

haven’t worked with yet that you’re keen to get in the studio with? We managed to get most of them for this one! I’d love to do something with Jay Z, Coldplay or Calvin Harris. They’re each leaders in their field.

As well as the first No.1 singles in both drum & bass and dubstep, you’ve been awarded ‘Best Producer’ at the Drum & Bass Awards and ‘Best Dance Act’ at this year’s Urban Music Awards – do you have to pinch yourself sometimes? Haha, I don’t much time to stand still and think about it. But that’s a good thing. Never rest on your laurels and always

focus on the future.

Do you still keep in touch with your bad company mates that you originally started

out with in the drum n bass scene? And how do they view your success?

Yes, I still speak to everyone – even if it’s just tweeting each other

while on tour. Not sure how they feel, I haven’t asked

directly!

We bet the first gig you ever played

was mighty

different to when you DJ now – where was it and what was it like? Blimey, can’t remember! Think it was a mate’s house party. I guess the main difference is that these days you end up being pretty removed from the crowd.

How do you prepare and get yourself revved up for your live shows and how do you find? I love performing with the band and it’s an honour to share the stage with them. Touring together means you get a real sense of camaraderie that you don’t have when you’re djing solo. We haven’t perfected a group huddle or pre-show ritual yet, but we’re working on it. Messy is usually the one who hypes us up before we walk on stage.

What can people expect from your Boardmasters show? There is a strong and committed drum n bass crowd in the SW!I’ve always loved playing in the South West, definitely a lot of love for the scene there - always has been. We’ll be dropping a lot of the new album and generally trying to tear it up as much as possible.

Lastly, how does DJ Fresh keep fresh in every sense? I keep listening to new music and always look out for something that’s interesting – it could be anything really - a new track, a new sound, a bit of software, artist, whatever. My motto is stay hungry!

The Feeling’ is released late September and ‘Nextlevelism’ is out early october. See DJ Fresh at Relentless Boardmasters, August 10 – 11, in Newquay. See www.boardmasters.co.uk for more info and tickets and check out www.thedjfresh.com

FRANKTURNER Festival folk favourite Frank Turner tells 247’s Laura Williams why he loves playing the South West, as he prepares to play TWO festivals in one day – Beautiful Days and Strummer of Love. He also muses over why his repertoire goes down so well at festivals...

You’re in the South West a fair bit this summer – what is it about the region that attracts you?I have family links with the area on my mum’s side, and I spent a fair amount of my summer holidays in Cornwall, Exeter, Somerset and the like. For some reason it’s an area that I personally think of being very English, for whatever that’s worth. It’s a beautiful, peaceful land. I could get lost down there for a long time.

As amazing as your headline gigs are, there’s something about a festival setting which brings your music to life – what do you think it is?I think (if I can get away with saying this myself) that my music, and especially my live shows, are characterized by a sense of community, or togetherness, or whatever the hell you want to call it. Festivals trade off that idea in and of themselves anyway, there’s an escapism about being on that side of the fence. Put the two together and I guess you have something special.

You’re quite heavily involved with Strummerville (we saw you at their London festival, which was fab), tell us about that...The Strummerville crew are friends of mine anyway, all good peoples. Aside from the social angle, they’re also involved in a great cause which is worthy of support. I’m really looking forward to the festival this summer (Strummer of Love), the line-up is nothing short of incredible. There are a lot of acts out there with a similar style to you these days (Bristol’s oxygen Thief, Chris T-T etc), what do you think about that?I think it’s cool. Chris has been making acoustic records longer than me and I’d count him as an influence as well as a friend. Barry (Oxygen Thief) is a great guy, known him for a long time. I think it’s great when people express themselves and make good music.

Your lyrics are pretty spot on a lot of the time, do you find it easy? How do you approach writing lyrics? Any advice?I’m useless at advice on this score because it’s not like I have a method or have ever been taught or anything. I just push syllables around my brain a lot, like all day in fact, it’s a mental tic almost. I’ve been doing it for a long time as well. I appreciate the compliment, incidentally - I am my own harshest critic and spend a lot of time worrying that I’m no good.

Page 11: 247 Magazine - August issue, SW edition

magazine | 11 www.247magazine.co.uk

What’s the lyric you’re most proud of writing? And your favourite lyric(s) penned by another?Of my own released song, I suppose the words to the song “Redemption” are probably among my proudest; boringly enough, I have a massive pile of new songs right now, some of which I think are pretty good. As for words by another, well, we’ll be here all day if I get stuck in properly, but I suppose I can say that pretty much anything John K Samson (The Weakerthans) has written is nigh on perfect. I mean, come on... “As I stand in front of an unresponsive automatic door, it’s just another door that won’t open for me anymore”. Yikes.

You’re a fan of covers, we’ve seen plenty of examples on YouTube, any more in the pipeline for the summer gigs?Maybe. It’s something that I like to let happen organically, just let them creep out of me when the moment is right, rather than sitting around plotting. I’m doing a Noel Coward cover for a split release with my good friend Franz Nicolay (The Hold Steady) later this year. That man (Coward) could write for sure.

Wembley was obviously a big moment for you...how does it feel playing there one minute and somewhere like Frome Cheese and Grain another?Wembley was great, but it was pretty out of my comfort zone, I’ve not done a show like that before, or indeed since. Ha. Shows like Frome seem like more fun to me on some levels as there’s less pressure - it’s just about showing up and having a good time.

Finally, will you ever grow up? And what does staying young mean to you?I guess the two terms have more to do with optimism to me than anything else. I firmly believe in self-made individuals, people who seize life and bend it to what they want it to be. I associate that sense of possibility with youth. No surrender, basically.

See Frank Turner play live at Frome Cheese & Grain, Somerset, on August 16, at Beautiful Days Festival in Devon and Strummer of Love in Somerset on August 17, before he heads off on a US tour. Tickets are also now on sale for his gig at Hall for Cornwall, Truro, on November 30, 2012. More info at www.frank-turner.com

Luke Ritchie

“I keep daydreaming about putting a really heavy brass band together, so perhaps I could get Colin Stetson to help me write some rock songs? Then Led Zeppelin could reform and we’d support them on their world tour.”

Luke Ritchie247’s Hannah giles checks in with singer-songwriter luke Ritchie ahead of his first ever gigs in Cornwall to talk the good, the bad, and supporting led Zeppelin on their world tour.

INTRODUCING

Catch Luke playing The Taphouse in St Agnes on August 2 and B-Side at Bunters in Truro on August 3. Luke’s album ‘The Water’s Edge’ is out now, available on iTunes and Amazon and a host of other stores all listed on his website - www.lukeritchie.co.uk.

Luke Ritchie is a man of great taste: “There are a lot of things I love about the South West. It’s usually warmer, more chilled out, and I love the coast, all the way from South Devon up to the Western Welsh coast. I love Cornwall, and have never played that far southwest, so it’ll be a pleasure… you never know, it may even be sunny.”

London-living Luke Ritchie is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist, probably in that order. “I got into playing because I loved music, and decided to teach myself how to play my Dad’s guitar when I was around 13. I only really discovered I could sing quite a bit later, with the help of some tequila.”

July 23 saw Luke release his debut album ‘The Water’s Edge’. What can you expect from it? “Most often, I’m inspired by personal relationships, occasionally the political, or the mundane. Hangovers are useful too. I enjoy writing, even though the process can be agonising sometimes,” he says. So how did Luke go from tequila to debut album? “It became more than a hobby when I finally decided to throw everything into it, and gave up the day job. I think a friend described it well when she said that music is a compulsion.”

Given the choice to write about heartbreak or falling in love, what would he choose? “Heartbreak is easier to write about, even if it’s more painful at the time. It’s harder to write a song about love that doesn’t make people want to throw up.”

“I’m just recovering from seeing Paul Simon at Hyde Park,” gushes Luke, when asked who inspires him the most. “He’s probably my favourite songwriter. The gig was fantastic, and the sight of someone still playing with such a great body of work behind him can’t help but be inspiring.” Who else is he rating right now? “I’ve been listening to Big Star’s first two albums a lot recently, as they’re a band I’d always meant to visit, but had never got around to. I’m struck by how fresh they sound for a band recording in the early 70s.”

As well as his solo music, Luke is part of The Golden Retrievers, a band he’s been a part of for a year or two, “I love collaborating with other musicians, as you learn so much. I keep daydreaming about putting a really heavy brass band together, so perhaps I could get Colin Stetson to help me write some rock songs? Then Led Zeppelin could reform and we’d support them on their world tour.”

Apart from on stage with Led Zeppelin, where are his favourite places to play? ‘I love small, quirky venues, as well as big festival stages. One of my favourite pub venues is the Lion Inn on Blakey Ridge on the North Yorkshire Moors. It’s 14 miles from the nearest building, and above the snow line, so you can have some pretty special lock-ins.’

Luke has played some other pretty special gigs too; “Memorable lows include playing an inflatable yellow stage to some terrified toddlers, and one of the deadest gigs I ever played was with Ed Sheeran a couple of years ago. There were about three people in the crowd. He was crashing on the promoter’s sofa that night, working his way around the country. He made it the hard way!”

With less than six months left before the world ends (apparently), how is Luke going to make it count? “We have a lot lined up over the rest of the year as we release the album, and I’m really looking forward to playing all the songs live. These gigs are really just the start, and we hope to have a larger tour coming up later in the year. I’ve started playing around with some ideas for the second album, as it’s just fun to be playing with the band. I’ve also been spending some time in Steve Winwood’s studio with The Golden Retrievers. We hope to have an album finished soon, so I’m really excited about that.”

Music

Freefall CollectiveSounds Out Of Time(Supafrequency Records)

Freefall Collective have been banging away at this music genre called dance for a while now (I have either heard them play live or met one of them before, but I can’t for the life of me remember which one it is). They’ve done all the usual festivals and received props from a decent line-up of industry people, so up until now all the right boxes have been ticked. Right now I really need a coffee fix, but these reviews need doing and thankfully, this album has quelled my thirst as it bumps and bounces and gives off all the right energy. If you like the Dub Pistols and Dreadzone, then this album is for you.

James Yorkston I was a Cat from a Book (Domino)

Scottish blokes linked with the Fence Collective make some of the most beautiful music in the world – fact. I’m talking King Creosote, The Pictish Trail, and of course, founding father, James Yorkston. The songs are clearly borne of their surroundings (recorded in North Wales) and are brought to life by tender, yet heartfelt vocals – a la Belle & Sebastian. A long time coming (last album was released in 2008), this here album not only has one of the greatest titles of the year, but also takes you on a lush journey through a slow, poignant Sufjan Stevens style (This Line Says) to more upbeat Eliza Carthy-esque numbers (Border Song) and impeccable duet with Sparrow and the Workshop’s Jill O’Sullivan

Dexys One Day I’m Going to Soar (BMG)

A long time in the making, Dexys #4 finds Kevin Rowland in fine vocal form, with a fresh sound that picks up where ‘Don’t Stand Me Down’ left. His new band includes Paul Weller’s former sidekick, Mick Talbot (The Style Council) plus two of his former Dexys buddies. Rowland’s self-revealing and autobiographical lyrics have a sense of fun about them, and he shows his playful side in following ‘I’m Always Going to Love You’ with ‘Incapable of Love’. Only he can get away with singing as soulfully as Marvin Gaye one minute, and saying “Take your Irish stereotype and shove it up your arse” the next. A true masterpiece and a welcome return.

Dope DemandRed Fox (Jon Kennedy Federation Records)

Every genre has its day (just look at how everyone is turning on dubstep now), but for people who loved it, their genre’s golden days last forever and now and then quality tunes come out which make you revisit older ones. While digitising my old vinyl, I’ve re-discovered some absolute quality downbeat, such as Massive Attack’s B sides and Doctor L’s early tunes, where hip hop met turntablism (and they brought in a vocalist too). This album is taking me back to those days, without sounding dated. If you like how hip hop used to be, you want to drift away or re enjoy a sunset (naturally in another country, as we lost the sun months ago) then this is an album for you!

The Fades Ragnarok (Genepool Records)

This one aint actually out until the Autumn – but we’re giving you a heads up here. If you like your indie with a bit more bite then The Fades are here to save you from nu-folk overload. Sitting somewhere between The Cribs, Symposium and The Hives on the genre scale, they employ solid drums, catchy guitars and sing-along choruses – harnessing an undeniable energy, which in places touches upon Biffy Clyro style vibes and even Clash sounds (‘I Love Punk Rock’). The vocals are at times deep like The Bravery and then are much more fun like The Futureheads, so much so that it’s pretty easy to pinpoint those influences which informed this album.

Shrag Canines (Fortuna POP!)

Their label-mates include The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Allo Darlin’, but if there’s one thing makes these London-Brighton art-rockers stand out is a real sense of adventure. Unlike some of their peers, they’re not human samplers, and not content with regurgitating. On ‘Canines’, their latest album, you will find a high quality of songwriting, fused with thoughtful arrangements. Helen King’s sugary voice seems to contradict her unusual and often complex lyrics, and they constantly change the pace and the mood, so they never sound stale. Again, songwriting skills make this happen. Their boy-girl choruses are reminiscent of Los Campesinos, but Shrag have better songs. And ‘Tendons in the Night’ is the best thing The Fall never wrote.

Sleepin Giantz Sleepin Giantz (Tru Thoughts Records)

This album deserves to be absolutely massive. Produced by Zed Bias, legendary garage and dubstep producer, with vocals from original UK don dada Rodney P and always good to hear Fallacy, plus the odd guest like Jenna G, how could this not bang like a barn door? I’m not sure whether to class this as hip hop or grime or something else, but suffice to say the productions would bang in a club or at home; and if there is any justice nowadays this will be all over everyone’s iPods, computers, hi-fis and gramophones this year. If you like garage, hip-hop, dubstep, or just dark and dingy clubs then you should check out this album.

Chilli Gonzales Solo Piano II (EMI)

And now for something completely different, an album of beautiful, heart-wrenching piano music from the larger-than-life Chilly Gonzales. The comparisons to Yann Tiersen and ? almost make themselves. In places (Kenaston), it sounds like a soundtrack to some American series of the OC or Dawsons Creek ilk – and you’re waiting for the over sincere lyrics to kick in, but they don’t. As you listen to Chilly tinkling the ivories, you can almost see him playing in a dimly lit bar – it conjures up a very specific atmosphere and has the power to take you away on a wave of wonderful sounds. The only thing is, it’s quite difficult to remember specific pieces straight away.

Toots and the Maytals Unplugged on Strawberry Hill/Reggae Got Soul (Metropolis)

Anyone with even the remotest interest in reggae will know how important Toots is: he literally invented the word, by being the first to say it on record (Do the Reggae). ‘Reggae Got Soul’ really sums him up! With a voice like his, classics like ‘Pressure Drop’ or ‘Sweet and Dandy’ have enough soul-power to knock you out, despite the stripped-down versions here. But a whole album of acoustic versions? They work better visually, on the DVD that comes with this. The rest of the DVD has a brilliant documentary (featuring Keith Richards!) on the great man, plus vintage live footage. Worth getting for the DVD: the album seems to serve as a side dish.

Greeen LInezThingz That Fade(Disktopia)

There is something uniquely british about Riz Mc, equally there is a very british part of me that wants to hate on him for being so darn successful at so many things, that’s what we do, when someone is struggling we love them, the moment they seem to break through we tell people their earlier work was better or we preferred them when they played to 6 people in the back of a pub. Some of you might know him better for lead role in Four Lions and the new Plan b film but Riz Mc first got on my radar due to his music, a cheeky song called 9/11 blues. This album shows a more grown up and no less incisive mc that deserves a bigger audience.

Dirty Projectors Swing Low Magellan (Domino)

If you thought you knew Dirty Projectors, think again; here we have an air of Mansun and Starsailor, with some subtle Americana in the vein of Jason Molina and Bright Eyes. However, it’s not all good. ‘The Socialites’ employs an irritating Nintendocore style ditty and rely on the vocals of Amber Coffman, who sounds a bit like a poor man’s Jenny Lewis. Things pick up straight away though, with Unto Caesar – a Teenage Fanclubby sporadic number, which wouldn’t be out of place in a US indie flick, starring Jason Gordon Levitt, then Coffman’s Kimya Dawson mimicked vocals come to cross that line between twee and irritating – except for during ‘Just From Chevron’, where they add a harmonious depth.

Stevie Jackson I Cant Say No (Banchory)

Stevie is The Man, quite clearly. An excellent guitarist, a member of the well-loved Belle & Sebastian and on loan to the Cobain-favoured Vaselines, it’s now time to show the world that he’s more than capable of taking the helm. ‘I Can’t Get No...’ proves that, and more besides. Packed with melody-driven songs and multi-layered harmonies, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d just stumbled upon a classic album from the ‘60s, one which you’d never heard of before. Too many highlights to mention - and he displays many different styles. The Byrds-like ‘Richie Now’ is my favourite.

MusicLoukBackbone

The Gaslight AnthemHandwritten(Mercury)

It’s business as usual chez Gaslight, as Brian Fallon pens ‘The 59 Sound’ Part Two while we all swoon over his nostalgia-heavy throwbacks and Springsteen stylistics. Indeed, it’s the same earnest grasping, the same figurative touchstones, the same arms-aloft choruses, the same lachrymal hooks, the same Jersey Shore tics. If anything, ‘Handwritten’ is the album that cements the band’s conceptual limitations. You may think that ‘Here Comes My Man’ is a departure but then you remember ‘The Queen Of Lower Chelsea’. At least ‘Keepsake’ finds our protagonist sounding more like Eddie Vedder than The Boss, ‘Too Much Blood’ packs a meaty sonic punch, and ‘National Anthem’ lays emotions bare. For a major label debut it’s a lot bolder than expected. Credit where it’s due.

Empty Poolswww.emptypools.co.uk

Bristol art-rockers, Empty Pools, are the point where Sleater-Kinney make a grab for the coasting indie sensibilities of Pavement only to land upon something altogether quite unique and special. Indeed, the quartet may mine a rich seam of Stateside-centric, off-kilter pop music but they do it so well as to not invite any accusations of pastiche. ‘Exploded View’ is sublime - an unfussy yet clever arrangement, a dash of Karate-esque dissonance and oodles of melody; while ‘Vanderbilt Cup’ is a deceptively pretty paean, but you have to know how to look at it to fully appreciate the beauty. There’s no reason why a band of this calibre won’t attain the giddy heights of their Sub Pop peers. Here’s hoping.

The Fresh and OnlysLong Slow Dance (Souterrain Transmissions)

Psych-rock may not be thin on the ground in San Francisco but The Fresh and Onlys have taken it right out to the edge, drenching their fourth LP in more loving fuzz, shimmering jangle and country wooziness than this soggy British summer can handle. At times, a perfect example of what Gram Parsons coined Cosmic American Music, the shaggy foursome are equally at home with acid-garage bluster (‘Yes Or No’, ‘Foolish Person’) as they are with Coral-esque soft shanty (‘Executioner’s Song’) and ‘80s synth-pop introspection (‘Fire Alarm’). Few bands possess the wherewithal to genre-hop at will but The Fresh and Onlys not only succeed, they do so without ever leaving any tracks. Seamlessly bold and brilliant.

Sophie Flynn www.sophieflynn.com

Somewhere in the no-woman’s-land between Kate Nash and Regina Spektor you’ll find Cornish songstress, Sophie Flynn. But do we really need a whimsical nonchalance and off-beam melody combo? Not when it’s done with this kind of self-conscious flakiness, where the whimsy turns to flimsy at the drop of an Edie Brickell refrain, and where singing is reduced to a series of hiccups and folksiness that grate within seconds. ‘USI’ takes Spektor’s inflection to saccharine sweet depths; ‘Paper Shredder’ is more twee than Jon Pertwee’s tweezers - Flynn trying her hardest to deliver true life snippets with a studied detachment; while ‘Cliches’ is a lamentable trudge through Brokenheartsville that should be confined to the bed from which it whimpered.

Call The DoctorHands Will Shake (Glasstone)

They may revel in the dubious cool factor of being compared to the likes of PJ Harvey and The Kills but the reality is that Bristol’s Call The Doctor often sound more like ‘80s new wave also-rans, The Photos. Which, in my eyes, makes them far cooler. Led by New Zealand born Patti Aberhart, the band certainly comes up with the spirited goods: all needle-sharp guitars, inventive bridges and learned melodies. ‘For Your Leisure’ doffs its cap to their Riot Grrrl heroes, Sleater Kinney, ‘Take It Out’ is pure melancholy pop, while ‘The Otherside’ is indebted to Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ jerky strut. But CTD are more than just the sum of their parts; there’s a fair sized dollop of uniqueness here that shields them from any accusations of mimicry.

Burning Bandits www.soundcloud.com/burningbandits

If you’re fed up with soft-sacs strumming acoustic guitars and warbling any old earnest-sounding shite over the top then you’re gonna hate Burning Bandits. The Bristol duo’s EP, ‘The Mirror Can’t Look Me In The Eyes’, is rife with the sort of thing that terminally over-sensitive emo-niks play around campfires just when you’re about to get lucky. No inventiveness, no drive, no guts, no glory; it’s the aural equivalent of a tepid shower. If there was a campfire in this room I’d toss this wretched artifact on top. In the meantime, songs like ‘St Etienne’ will serve to remind us of how bad things can get when you allow people to use the word ‘troubadour’ at will.

CitizensCtzns(self-release)

Glasgow progcore trio, Citizens (not to be confused with the crappy London hipster ensemble of the same name), deliver a debut album with musical ideas spilling out into all kinds of artful, askew and arbitrary territories. But the vocals are strait-jacketed by that same old angsty manful wallop that you hear on every aggressive punk rock record made by people under 30. Sometimes it works perfectly (‘Try Harder’, ‘New Punks’), but for the most part it undermines the band’s fierce intelligence (‘Habitual Smoker Blues’, ‘Distance Blues’). Citizens are clearly blessed with a sonic expertise that manages to combine Fugazi, Shellac and Gallows into a head-scratching and head-banging whole. All they need now is to take the same chances with their voices.

One Eyed Jacks www.oneeyedjacksonline.co.uk

Hey, One Eyed Jacks, if you’re going to mention The Dismemberment Plan then at least have the decency to be nothing less than fucking great. Alas, the Bristol quartet have little vestige of such post-punk brilliance on their debut EP, ‘Welcome Aboard The Argo’. But it’s certainly not all bad. ‘The Kid Can’t Keep Time’ boasts a celestial middle eight and ‘Cora’s Nova Scotia’ has some smart rhythmic flourishes that hint at the gentle melancholy of TDP. Whether Lee Everson’s overcooked vocal style will ever settle into the developed music is another matter. I’d suggest that the band go back and remind themselves of their influences and realise that Chris De Burgh isn’t one of them.

Jam + Spoon - Follow Me (Remixes) (Wall Music)

The original of this shouldn’t need an introduction to most of you, as Jam + Spoon catapulted their way into the UK Charts with release after release of prime time, yet commercially edged productions (as well as some killer B-Sides.... ‘Keep On Movin’ anyone?!). ‘Follow Me’ started life that way back in 1993, and although this reviewer is too young to remember the success it had, many leading names of the genre are still playing ‘Follow Me’ out to date. Wall Music in Germany have wisely decided to release some new remixes, with remixer of choice being Perc, who takes the track and gives it a darker, techno reworking, with that haunting melody from the original still in place.

Wragg - Awoken (Atmosphere)

Taunton’s Atmosphere continue their reign as one of the most in demand hard trance labels in Europe with this, the first of many releases to come from them over the summer (or lack of, judging by the amazing weather we are having (!) season). This time it’s the debut solo production from label boss Wragg since him and Log:One decided to sadly part ways earlier in the year. ‘Awoken’ certainly proves the naysayers wrong and demonstrates that Wragg is more than capable of making a tune by himself, and with dark haunting synths, twisted vocals and a deep resounding kick and bass, this has worked wonders when played out and is definitely the start of many great things to come.

Paul Trainer – Outbound (Discover White Label)

To be fair when I first saw ‘Outbound’ waiting to be checked out, there was an initial haste, as Discover’s output has the ability to sometimes do something radically different, or just pale into insignificance and sound exactly like the majority of generic ‘here today gone tomorrow’ trance releases out there. Thankfully ‘Outbound’ surmises what is wrong with most of the trance being released today, and firmly sticks two fingers up in that direction. Where myself and peers miss trance releases with edgy percussion, gorgeous melodies and an unrelenting drive, whilst being left feeling empty when playing a good 85% of releases out there, this one has it spot on and has been championed in every set since hearing.

DJ Audy - Taiko Mission (Diablik Mix) (Tech Fu)

Canada’s DJ Audy has had an awesome year, releasing material that manages to fuse techno and hard trance nicely. The original of ‘Taiko Mission’ caused quite a stir when released, and now Ukrainan export ‘Diablik’ has given it a new lease of life with a glitchy techno reworking that simply has to be heard. OK, it’s not perfect, and a boost in the bass department when mastering would have given this an additional sparkle that made it stand out even more, but for something to kick start your sets and leave people wondering ‘what on earth was that?’, this is definitely the track. Check out the trance-tastic remix of Agami Mosh from local wonder Nick The Kid as well.

London anarcho-diehards, INNER TERRESTRIALS, are a band whose simple ska-punk-folk fodder is ready-made for the new age travellers, old age revellers and stoneage Levellers who gathered to spill scrumpy, hug merrily and wobble the night away (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 14th June). Thankfully, their ideological purity still carries some relevance in an increasingly cynical age. Representing their hometown, FJT proffered a similarly anti-capitalist skankalong, proving that, even with the advances of sonic science, there’s always an audience for this kind of old school rabble-rousing.Next up, a workable combination of the mellifluous and the melancholy (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 15th June). Plymouth trio, WOAHNOWS, impressed with their early Tubelord meets early Razorlight powerpop rumble. Indie-folk quartet, THIS CALAMITY’s debut show ably showcased Martyn Crocker’s pitch-perfect croon and the band’s understated cadence. THE PATRICK JAMES PEARSON BAND were electrifying. If their keyboard-frenzied sex-pop isn’t being lauded over by all the BBC4 talking heads within the next five years I’m going to set myself on fire. The perennially solemn HEAD OF PROGRAMMES brought us back to earth with a contemplative bang, but it was no anti-climax. James Macgregor’s baritone burr carried the band’s REM-on-downers thrum to its desperately delightful conclusion.Freedom Fields festival was free fun for all the family, especially the dysfunctional family who live down your street and who seem to survive on a diet of premium strength lager and blazing drunken rows (Plymouth, 23rd June). The rain failed to put the dampeners on DAMERELS and their impossibly solid, and very interactive, garage punk grumble. Spiky trio, GIANT JOHNSON, bathed in the glow of a packed marquee; WEEK NIGHT THIEVES’ metallic groove evoked a healthy gaggle of dancing kids and kidults; and regional hip-hop crew, SCRIBES, laid down a sprightly three-pronged vocal souffle. Meanwhile, over in the titchy acoustic tent, DR THUD’S REMEDY were dropping some trad Irish tunes with a tea-chest bass giving them a thick air of authenticity. Same night, at the White Rabbit, COSMO JARVIS was working his askew pop magic to the healthy throng who had braved the downpour. Reduced to a trio, Cosmo’s solid grasp of craft and creativity was no less impressive. Sunday afternoon, it’s back to Freedom Fields. And with clear skies above (true story) the hangover blues were quickly neutralised by DEVIL’S DUO’s amiable folk dalliance and the endearing, quintessentially English folk-pop of THE MAN WHO LOVES YOU. Which left HILLHEAD to finish things off with a mild-mannered bang amongst a veritable sea of acoustic guitars. The festival season’s love affair with rain continued apace with 2000 Trees (Cheltenham, 13th July). Punk’n’roll oiks, THE COMPUTERS, took it in their stride: frontman, Al Kershaw, succumbing to the mud to the point where his Daz-white shirt and jet-black quiff were reduced to the kind of thing you see at a Six Nations final. Before you could say ‘shitty wellies’, we were off again, bound for the Czech Republic and Mighty Sounds fest (14-15th July) where the music wavered gloriously between rock steady and rockabilly, Britpunk and hardcore, and FRANK TURNER’s folk-lite positivity. DISCHARGE, however, were a big disappointment. I adored them in the ‘80s and now here they were, messy and mushy, racing through gems like ‘Decontrol’ with the lamentable Rat on vocals, adding an extra layer of cringe. Thankfully, THE PEACOCKS were on hand to deliver a masterclass in punkabilly; while THE SKINTS put on a stunning display of LDN reggae that put all other contenders to shame. Elsewhere, ANTI-VIGILANTE’s ska-metal, BUSTER SHUFFLE’s music hall skank, SET YOUR GOALS’ fratboy hardcore, TURBO ACS’ nonchalant garage punk and SONIC BOOM SIX’s squeaky hip-hop kept things ticking over very nicely until the inevitable pass-out and plane call. See-ya bye.

It’s catered for the masses and become one of the South-West’s best night spots on a Saturday – but The Office Nightclub in Truro is now re-writing the rule book by launching as a live music venue on a Friday night.

OFFICIAL LIVE MUSIC plays out every other Friday night and caters for over 16s at every night! Owner Darren Hoare says “We just wanted to show off how much amazing talent the South-West has to offer with our headline acts and in turn give other groups a chance to play to a few hundred people by playing as support acts.

So far this year they have already seen some amazing nights with BackBeat Sound System, These Reigning Days and an amazing beatbox group called DUKE.

Other acts already confirmed for the rest of the year are the likes of Sandfire Siren, Rudetiger, Tom James, The Matt Collinge Trio, The Boston Plan, Everything Burns, Blue Horyzon and Black Friday, with another huge gig lined up for DUKE in October.

The night is £3 a ticket or just £5 on the door with drinks promos and just generally a great vibe.
