Welcome to June’s magazine which isonce again bursting at the seams withyour news and views including a plethoraof Diamond Jubilee events; aren’t wegoing to have fun.

We were also very lucky to have a visitfrom the her Majesty and whilst she didn’tactually make it to the Wriggle Valley (Iam sure she would have done if shecould) many of our residents met her andsome even sang to her (see p51). We wishher Royal Highness and you, our readers,a very splendid Daimond Jubilee. Don’tforget to send in your photos.

Ginny Goodall has popped back thismonth with an article about a colourfullocal resident, Geoffrey Perry who nowlives in the Old Vicarage but used to be asheep farmer in Hilfield - do you knowsomeone local who deserves a write-up?

Just reminding you that our next double issue will beAugust/September so please bear that in mind when yousend your Autumn events. Happy Diamond Jubilee

CHETNOLE.....with Melbury Bubb & Stockwood

Another sad beginningthis month; Mrs Sue Tabor, formerly of

The Court (now Chetnole House) passedaway peacefully on Friday 27 April at TallTrees Nursing Home, Shipton underWychwood, Chipping Norton. There hasbeen a private cremation service which willbe followed by a memorial service andinterment in St Peter’s Church, Chetnole at

6

12.00pm on Saturday 23 June. I am surethat lots of you will remember Sue, a lovelylady with a big friendly smile. Young andold will recall her (as indeed do I) on theplaying field with Becky her dog - she neverfailed to stop for a little chat and we sendour condolences to her family at this verysad time for them.

We also send our love along with a getwell message to Di Murphy and GordonFoy who have both been poorly recently. On a happier note, another of our Sues, our very own Sue Morgan (see p 11) hasbeen in the limelight recently and beenawarded a “Local Hero” award; well doneSue, you really do deserve the award!

Good on you Gary Sturgess (see p 12),Marathon Man Extraordinaire, forcompleting yet another London Marathonon 22 April in yet another amazing time of

four hours, twenty two minutes and 58seconds! I am sure you will all want to joinme in congratulating Gary for his enormouseffort (not least for all the years offundraising for St Margaret’s Hospice) -Gary you are amazing and we are all veryproud of you, particularly your gorgeousgirls; Eileen, Amy and Molly.

Congrats also to Robert Aldhouse foralso completing the course and also raisinga staggering amount of money for hischosen charity - read dad Jim’s piece onhim later.

Have a great Diamond Jubilee and seeyou at the weekend’s fun and festivities.Let’s hope the rain keeps away from ourlittle corner of the world for a few days atleast!

Chetnole & Stockwood “Big Tidy-Up”Utilising the Chetnole Home Watch

network, I called for volunteers to carry outan organised village “litter-pick” on 18 April,as part of the “West Dorset Spring Clean”initiative. I am delighted to report that 22residents responded enthusiastically, andmustered at the Wednesday CoffeeMorning in the Village Hall. Working in pairs, they sallied forth to their allotted areas, undaunted by the pouring rain. Gloves, yellow tabards [suitably logo’ed] and bagswere provided by WDDC, whose operativescollected quite a pile of filled bags thefollowing day. Spare a thought for Joe Meierand Colin Bowden, who covered the longstretch of Stockwood Road from the railwayhalt to the A37 in the evening, the weatherhaving taken a turn for the worse. Everyoneagreed that the exercise was worthwhileand should be repeated in late autumnwhen the undergrowth has died back, making any litter is easier to see and retrieve.

Many thanks to all who took part.Needless to say, all of the above would beunnecessary, if all good citizens followedthe guidelines in “The Litter-Pickers’ BestPractice Manual”, and dropped their litterin waste disposal bins or took it home!

Gordon RatcliffeNote from the Editor - thank you also for

all your cleaning up on the way to MelburyBubb - it is much appreciated especially asthe weather was so foul.

Chetnole's Local Hero

Our own Sue Morganhas now been officially recognised as aLocal Hero at a Western Gazette PrideAwards ceremony where scores ofinspirational people from Somerset andDorset were celebrated for their selfless, unsung work. Shortlists were drawn upfrom nominees for the ten categoriesbefore a judging panel selected theultimate winners and the results wereannounced at the awards lunch at theTithe Barn, Hazlebury Mill on 19 April.

Sue was nominated for the Local Heroaward by numerous villagers in Chetnole inrecognition of her tireless work inproducing and distributing the village e-diary, organising the weekly coffeemornings, which have grown like topsy toinclude a book and puzzle exchange, produce bring and buy, a fresh breadcollection service, and most importantly, the outreach Post Office facility. Suealso organises first aid courses in thevillage and works as a volunteer caseworker for the charity Soldiers, Sailors,Airmen and Families Association. With acheery smile and a wicked sense of humour,Sue quietly gets on with improving thelives of so many people and so on behalf ofthe village and all the other people youhelp, thank you Sue, it was well deserved.

Our Marathon MenGary Sturgess

After hearing thenews in October that Ihad been given aplace by StMargaret’s Hospicein the Virgin LondonMarathon, mythoughts turned tohow I shouldprogram mytraining? I did mylast marathon in2010 so with a year

of very little running I was unsure of myfitness levels but after a few weeks with acouple of 13 mile runs I was feeling good. Theearly morning training runs on Sundaymorning went well during the winter andspring. The weather although cold was veryoften sunny and often I would see the oddhand wave out of a car window with the shoutof encouragement or the hoot of the car hornduring these runs on my way to Sherborne oron my way back via Bradford Abbas.

The most miles I ran in one go this timehad been 21 miles and most runners say youshould not do the complete marathon run of26 miles. As for the food intake I had beengiven a book on running marathons by Eileenand the girls which went into all aspects ofthis sport

I ran this year’s marathon on Sunday 22April, a lovely sunny morning with around37,000 other runners. The first 13 miles wentwell and I just missed seeing my family atLondon Bridge. The run through the city isalways uplifting and before you realize it youare heading back on the way towards LondonBridge. Around the 22 mile mark I started tosuffer with cramp in both legs and stoppedrunning. After stretching and walking and afew encouraging words from the crowds I

managed to get going again. It was good tosee the Orton family from Chetnole near the23 mile mark who cheered me on which keptmy spirits up. Another mile along the way Iheard the familiar shouting of the Sturgessfamily who were not going to let me missthem this time. Big Ben was in sight and Iknew that there was only a few more miles torun and I hoped that the cramp would notreturn.

I crossed the finishing line with a time of 4hours 22 minutes 58 seconds. Although I didnot reach my personal goal of under 4 hours Iwas relieved to have finished.

This year a total of £2,150 has been raisedfor St Margaret’s Hospice. A total of£9120:25p has been raised over the fourmarathons for St Margaret’s Yeovil and theWeldmar Hospice in Dorchester. None of thiscould have been achieved without yourcontinuing support. I have beenoverwhelmed by your generous donations. Itmeans such a lot to the hospices who rely ondonations to keep them functioning. Thankyou very much. Gary Sturgess

Robert AldhouseJust to let everyone know Robert

Aldhouse, the father of Poppy India Aldhousein whose name the recent concert in ChetnoleHall took place, finished the LondonMarathon.  He was not impressed with histime (5h 40min) but with shin splints andblisters encompassing both feet at least heFINISHED, raising over £3,000 for the DownsSyndrome Association.  Much of thesponsorship came from Chetnole residents somany thanks  to all those who contributed. There are still a few videos left of the "Rock onPoppy" concert so if you missed it and wouldlike one for only £5.00 donated to the DownsAssociation please contact Jim Aldhouse on872994.

Stanley Waterfall Way Saturday 28 April dawned cold andwet, but an intrepid party of some 70walkers gathered at Leigh Village Hall towalk the newly created StanleyWaterfall Way and commemorate itsofficial opening and inauguration. The Way has been created on existingfootpaths around the village, with roadentry points at Leigh Church and on theChetnole road adjacent to FudgesBakery. Stanley Waterfall, also known as“Mr Leigh”, gave many years of faithfulservice and support to organisationsand activities in and around Leigh andwas awarded the MBE in recognition ofhis service to the community. He passedaway in October 2010 and Leigh ParishCouncil (LPC) has created this short (2.3km) way-marked route in his memory.

Stanley was for many years therights of way officer for Leigh and thiswalk was the first walk that he did withTrevor Evans, the new rights of wayofficer, when he was handing over. The group, including 22 members ofStanley’s family, stopped for aphotograph in the fields behind thechurch, where Brian Read, Chairman ofLPC and Stanley’s son Kevin said a fewwords before commencing the walk. The route, as shown on the attachedmap, is across farmland and isabundant with wildlife and wild flowers,so loved by Stanley. It was good to havelocal landowners taking part in the walk

as theycould explain what washappening in their fields as we wentacross them. Permissive paths havebeen added in a couple of places toallow people to cross the land withoutdisturbing livestock. The route followsalongside the old Church Lane, beforeentering it and returning across farmland to the Bakery buildings.

The route can be very wet and inChurch Lane we were walking through3” of flowing water along the lane. There are stiles in several places and it ishoped to replace some of these withkissing gates to make it easier for thosewho find climbing over stiles difficult. The walk concluded with coffee andbiscuits in Leigh Village Hall. It is withgreat thanks to LPC and to Trevor thatthis wonderful short walk has beencreated and we hope that manypeople will walk it.

Great to see somany people turn up for the churchyard tidy up and to welcome some newfaces. This edition markshalfway through the 2012 calendar andsummer is nearly here, what an excitingyear and still so much to look forward to.The celebrations for the Queen’s DiamondJubilee events are almost upon us, therehas been a fantastic response for tablesat the big lunch and I am sure this will bea wonderful occasion for the village.

Sport features heavily in the calendarfor the rest of the year with theOlympics/ Paralympics, Euro 2012 andTest Match cricket, what a feast for sportsfans.

Please check the advertisement forevents in support of St Andrews Church –Café Church, Olympic Service etc. Theshop which housed the post office looksquite sad without an occupant and therestill seems to be no movement regardingan appropriate site for a post officewithin the village.

Yetminster Fair 14 July

The Fair Association and volunteersare hard at work getting thingsorganised and ready for this year’sYetminster Fair and Evening Concert. One of those performing at this will beJames Findlay who strutted his stuff towow the judges and win the top honourat the 2010 BBC Young Folk Awards.

The 23-year-old from Dorchesterperformed a stunning set of traditionalsongs to beat off some stiff

competition and still recalls that it wasa fantastic weekend! Since then he hasgone from strength to strength and hasnow released his debut album with amajor label. As well as playing anupbeat fiddle (he began playing thefiddle as an eight-year-old) he alsoplays the guitar and has a voice that isboth young and fresh, and which istinged with the impression of years ofexperience and hardship. This providesa sound that is a heady mix of youthfulexuberance and mature richness.

James is also a man capable oftelling a convincing tale no matter howcomplicated. There is something veryreal in his delivery that sucks thelistener into a tale and hisunaccompanied renditions are amaster class in the art of story-tellingthrough song.

He will be accompanied by his trioand we think (and hopefully you willagree) that we are lucky to have himperform at our concert on the 14 Julyat 7.30pm in St Andrew’s Hall.

We look forward to seeing you onthe day and hope to have tickets forthe concert on sale soon – watch thisspace!

STREETPARTY/BIG LUNCH(Sunday 3 June)

The response tothe street party hasbeen overwhelming

which is mostheartening and I would

like to publicly thank Jane Trower and herteam for all the hard work they have put into ensure the party is a success.BARN DANCE (Monday 4 June)

It was most unfortunate that we had tocancel the Barn Dance and I am sure somepeople are disappointed. However we hadto guarantee a full house to cover the costsand the committee felt this was unlikely tohappen.BEACON (Monday 4 June

The Beacon on the Church Tower willbe lit at 10.20 pm (as ordained by ‘higherauthority’). it would be good to have alarge gathering of residents to witness thishistoric event. So please bring your familyand a bottle or two to toast Her Majesty aswe light the Beacon.PERMANENT MEMORIAL

An outline design has been agreed withAndrew Whittle the Stone Mason. He willnow produce a full design for theCommittee’s agreement. After that it willbe made public. We then have to obtainplanning permission which may take a little

time before we can give Andrew the goahead. However the highways authorityhave said they have no problem withplacing it in the triangle.

As a result the memorial is unlikely tobe in place before the autumn. Watch thisspace.Fundraising So far some 80 generouspeople have donated about one third ofthe required finance for which very manythanks. However much more is needed. Iam sure there are many other generousresidents!JUBILEE IT’S A KNOCK OUTSaturday 2 June

AND FINALLY. Very many thanks forthe support and help many of you havegiven to help make this weekend a success.Lets hope it doesn’t rain!

Yetminster & Hilfield Parishes AGMThe combined parishes of Yetminster

and Hilfield had their annual meetings onMonday 23 April, St George's Day, in StAndrew's Hall. The first meeting, to electChurchwardens for the year, wasunfortunately a non-event - with theretirement of the sole Warden, ValerieRowsell, and no candidate coming forward, the parish will have to do the best it can forthe time being. At the annual meetingwhich followed a full PCC was elected, consisting now of Claudius Algar (Hilfield),Valerie Rowsell, Judy Pyke, Claire MacLeod-Ash, Barry Smallcalder, Graham Plaice(new), Simon Jones (new), David Price(Treasurer) and Patrick Moule (Secretary). They were soon joined by two DeanerySynod Representatives, Lady Clare Lindsay(new) and Bill Shipman.

The Rector spoke of developmentsduring the year, notably the successfullaunch of Helping Hands and the growth ofMessy Church, informal services for veryyoung children and their parents. The PCC'sreport, as well as giving thanks for the verymany people who help in so many differentways, focused on two major problemsahead. First, rising costs and diminishingincome underlined the need for eitherretrenchment or financial development. The older generation is becoming less ableto shoulder the burden in the traditionalway and ways of involving other people inmuch needed regular giving and fund–raising need to be addressed. For now, services are maintained with the help ofretired clergy and the Friary. Second, StAndrew's Hall covers its ordinary runningcosts from letting income (everyone knowswhat a fine and well-equipped Hall it is) butthe older part of the building needs largerscale work quite often and the cost (eachtime in many £1000s) falls on the PCC,

which is less and less able to bear thestrain of maintaining what is in effect themain hall for the village as well as thechurch. The meeting heard too with greatsadness of the sudden loss of PamCommon, who apart from her hugecontribution to the life of the village inother ways, served as Booking Secretaryand, with Bob, generally 'kept the show onthe road'.

Full reports, and minutes can be seenon our website -www.wrigglevalleybenefice.org and clickon Yetminster - Annual Reports. We hopethat the accounts will soon be posted.

At the end of the meeting PatrickMoule, who has lived in the village for 40years, the same time as the Rowsells, made, to great applause, a presentation ofgarden tokens to Valerie and Brian Rowsell, referring to the immense contribution theyhad made over the years to church andvillage.

London MarathonMade it!! Although I

hadn't been able to doany road work sinceOctober my foot was noproblem at all. My thigh

muscles however gave up after aboutmile 12.

All the training at the Gym paid offas I was never really tired but mythighs packed up; but I managed toget around in just over 6 hours.

Wearing fancy dress helped as Ihad great support all the way round, plus Carole and contingent appearedat various cheering points which wasa great encouragement.

Thanks again to you allin helping to raise over 2,000 for theBritish Heart Foundation.

At the end I said never again - butyou never know ????

Jim Bayfield, White Hart

It was later that awfulmorning; we had to get out ofthe house; off to the White Hartfor a family meeting; what to donext? Pam/Mum was now atpeace!

It had to be a Catholicservice! Of course, but wherecan she be laid? Don’t know!

A tear sodden voice says “Iknow where she’d want to be, Iknow where she ought to be,over there” while stabbing afinger towards the churchyard.

Of course – obvious, but is itat all possible. Don’t know!

I called the churchwarden.“Would it be possible….?” “Whata good idea, if anybody deservesto be there, she does”.

I talked to the rector “Inthese days of ecumenicalism

(I’ve had trouble saying thatword, nearly as bad as the pluralof text), it seems only fitting”.Then my big, worrying question.“Would it be possible to have aCatholic Priest to do the service?”

In these days of beaurocraticobstruction, it was wonderful tosee doors opened, assistancegiven, and problems magickedaway, all for a Blow-in, albeitone from forty years ago, laidbetween the buildings where shespent so much time. I thank youfrom the bottom of my heart.

May I take this opportunity tothank all of you who sent kindmessages? The whole familywere mightily moved.

I thank you all, Bob & Family.

Main issues for 2011/12 were thefollowing (no particular order).SPEEDING - Speeding – particularly by largeagricultural vehicles – continues to annoyresidents. There is a plan for volunteers tocarry out speed checks (as in Stoford) butDorset Police cannot make their mind upwhether a police officer should be inattendance – which rather nullifies thewhole point of volunteers. If you see avehicle which you consider speeding orotherwise driving badly please take itsnumber, record the time and report it tothe PoliceDOG FOULING - Whilst this has not beenraised at council it continues to be aproblem and is extremely antisocial. I canonly reiterate what I said last year. Pleasewill all dog owners be more thoughtful andconsiderate to other residents and cleanup after their dogs.WEBSITE - This is now available to thepublic – yetminsterparishes.gov.uk – butstill lacks information which can only beprovided by residents and business’s withinthe village. If you would like somethingincluded on the site please let the ParishClerk know. The aim of the site is to informpeople from outside Yetminster about thevillage and its facilities.

STREET LIGHTING - All the smallestates where changes to street lightingwere threatened have asked for like for likechanges rather than more lights asrequired by EU law. The P C has agreed tothis and the changes will be made in duecourse. I would like to register my thanksto Ray Drewett for his help on this matter.

GYPSY SITE - The consultation on theproposed travellers site at the bottom ofColes Lane raised much discussion. TheParish Council has voiced its opposition

citing 10 points as to why the site isunsuitable. We now await the result of theconsultation which I understand will beavailable in July.POST OFFICE

Sadly the Post Office was closed inOctober and subsequently Mrs Merrit wasdischarged by the Post Office authorities. To this day the Council are unaware of thereasons for this as it was a matter betweenMrs Merrit and the Post Office. The PostOffice authorities are actively looking foranother outlet but with no success yet asfar as I am aware. In the meantime themobile post office will continue onWednesday afternoons.S106 Money - This is the technical term forthe grant to local communities from adeveloper who wishes to build within theparish. Some £2250 was available from theBoyles School Building and the Council hasrecommended that this goes to the PTA forthe swimming pool. The PTA has applied toWDDC – who control the money – for thegrant. A further £10,000 (in round figures)will be available from the Cross Farm siteand the Council has ideas how this mightbe spent for the benefit of the community.FASTER BROADBAND - The Council hasbeen involved in the County Council’s planfor the implementation of fasterbroadband (up to 85mbps) by 2015.

Yetminster Fun RunOn Sunday 22 April 2012 the very first

Yetminster Fun Run took place, raising funds forthe community swimming pool.

We have been absolutely overwhelmed bythe amount of support we have had from somany people throughout and we have raised inexcess £1100.

A massive thank you to all the fun runentrants! We hope you enjoyed the route, despite the challenge of Tark’s Hill! Dorsetwouldn’t be Dorset without a hill or two. Wehope to hold this event annually, so next yearplease spread the word as it would be fantasticto double the numbers. This year all entrantsreceived a Purist water bottle, generouslydonated by our Sponsor, Rock and Road bicycles,Yeovil.

The fun runs itself would not have been ableto go ahead without the twenty two marshalswho gave up their time to support and keep therunners/walkers safe on their route. Theresponse for cake bakers was outstanding andfunds raised from the cakes and tombola stallsalone were truly amazing. A huge thank you toall the bakers and to those people who helped torun the stalls. Thanks to Hannah Wilson, the airwas filled with the smell of cooking bacon, adelicious hearty snack for the runners on theirreturn!

The children bounced happily on the bouncycastle, kindly donated for the event by RobBarfoot. John Paul Humphries, who was runningin the London Marathon on the day, donated a

signed Bath Rugby shirt, which was sold in asilent auction.

All in all, the morning was a huge success. Allthe hard work carried out by the Busy Beeweekend workers did not go unseen. Parents, friends, grandparents and local residents all hada chance to see how much improved ourswimming pool now is.

The grand opening of Yetminster CommunitySwimming Pool was celebrated by the plantingof a tree, donated by Sherborne Castle Gardens,in the grounds of the swimming pool area. Theswimming pool committee had a great responseto their ‘wish list’ for the pool. Thank you to allof you who have left us your contact details.

Last, but not least. Behind the scenes ofSunday’s event was a very busy lady, namelyAnna Taylor. It was Anna Taylor’s childhoodmemories of an outdoor pool that has motivatedso many of us to join her in her quest the savethe pool for our children and their community. She has begged, borrowed and chivvied manypeople on to help with this huge task. Sharonand Chris Murphy have also been instrumentalin making sure we had a fantastic finish line signfor the race, as well as the splendid signsdisplayed on the perimeter of the pool area. Wealso can’t forget the invaluable help and drivefrom Jess Crocker and the school’s very own PTA.

All in all, Sunday 22 April 2012 truly was afantastic example of people coming together tohelp their community and all in the name of FUN!

Message in a BottleOn the 1 Sep 11 my wife and I left

Southampton for a cruise onboard the QueenElizabeth, visiting the USA and Canada for 25days. The cruise was very enjoyable and on the1 Oct 11, after a very good lunch, I decided toput a message in a wine bottle with our addressand telephone number etc, made sure that thecork was well pressed home and launched it over side of the ship.

Having forgotten about the message, imagine my surprise when I receiveda telephone call on Friday 13 Apr 12 at approximately 7.00 p.m. It was froma lady called Mrs Jean Reid, she was from the Isle of Islay, Scotland. She hadbeen walking on the beach at Loch Gruinart and discovered the bottle washedup on the beach. She took it home and broke the bottle open to read themessage. Jean says that they do find lots of flotsam and jetsam but rarelyfind messages. I have her telephone number and she was very excited tospeak to me.

I launched the bottle just north of Newfoundland as we were on our wayback to Southampton. The ship should have gone south but due to badstorms the Captain changed the route.

One day a year – Fires and ForecastsQuestion: When is bonfire night?

Well, the answer isn’t quite asstraightforward as you might think.

Of course we all know that GuyFawkes and his fellow conspirators areremembered on November 5, but it isn’tthat long ago when bonfires were burntto celebrate Midsummer.

Even today, wheneverthere is amomentousstateoccasion like theQueen’s Jubilee or aroyal wedding, we celebrate with fire, either with bonfires orlighted beacons across the countryside.

Midsummer Eve, the eve of the feastof St John the Baptist (23 June), was thetraditional date for somewhat less robustbeliefs in Dorset.

According to the great Dorset dialectpoet William Barnes, 23 June was “thegreat time with girls for discovering whoshall be their husbands… A maiden willwalk through the garden at midsummer, with a rake on her left shoulder andthrow hemp seed over her right, sayingat the same time”:

“Hemp seed I set, hemp seed I sow,The man that is my true love come

after me and mow.”.

This extraordinary behaviour doesn’tseem to have been a flight of Barnes’fancy because Thomas Hardy refers tothe same practice in The Woodlanders.

Hardy wrote about an even stranger

method of husband divination wherebyat noon on Midsummer Day young girlswould gather in a field and dig holes inorder to ascertain the trades of theirfuture husbands. Hardy didn’t go into theniceties of how this peculiar practicemight work or how the prospective

husband’s occupation mightmanifest itself.

Even more bizarre isBarnes’ account of

Dorset’s crossed shoetradition whereby a girlwill place her shoes atright angles to each

other in the form of a T whenshe goes to bed on Midsummer

Eve and will say:

Hoping this might my true love to see I place my shoes in the form of a T.

The image of her husband to bewould apparently be certain to come toher in a dream!

On a more sombre note, a Miss MGASummers reported to the Dorset CountyChronicle in 1881 that “if you sit in thechurch porch on Midsummer Eve you willsee those who are going to die duringthe ensuing year enter the church andnot come out again.”

I think I’d rather not know about whomay get married or who may die in theyear ahead, so I’m making sure I haveplenty to keep me occupied on 23 June!Perhaps it will be a good day for a bonfire.

51wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk

One grey very wet day- it wasraining cats and dogs (possibly corgis) -at the beginning of May, we set off tomeet Her Majesty, the Queen. Thisexciting day began as we poured ontothe bus at 8.00 clock in the pelting rain.On our way we had to collect all theother children (120 in all) from eightdifferent local schools who werecoming with us to help celebrate thisgreat occasion of the Queen’s visit toSherborne. We all had been asked towear hats in the theme of the MadHatter’s tea party and the Queensjubilee. Once we were there we piledinto a tent to get out of the downpourand sat waiting expectantly, flags atthe ready

When the Queen arrived everyonecheered, shouted and waved their flags. As she stepped out of the car shebrightened up the day as

a vision in fuchsia and as ifby magic, the clouds parted and the sunstarted to shine. We (Alex and Caitlin)were chosen to represent our schooland talk about our art work on theJurassic coast. Prince Philip spoke to us,asking us where we came from andabout our school (we were a bit nervousbut very excited).

After that we all sang a speciallywritten song by Daniel England to theQueen as she left; Prince seemed toespecially like it as he smiled andjumped when we all shouted Hurray atthe end of the second verse.

Once the Queen left in a ratherposh car (which all the boys arguedwhether it was a Bentley or a RollsRoyce) we all sat down at the tablesand had a tea party. Yum

That was the end to a great daywhich we will remember forever.

News from our ChurchesAt this juncture these are

ideas not formal proposals. However the dominant ideathat the ArchdeaconryPastoral committee areconsidering is a Team thatwould encompass the Valeof the White Hart, the GifleValley and the WriggleValley. In this Team therewould be two stipendiaryclergy, a Team Rector andTeam Vicar, and a number ofNon-Stipendiary clergy andLay Licensed Ministers(Readers). We believe thatpotentially this could enableus to use all of the ministersacross the three beneficessouth of Sherborne moreeffectively (given that thediocesan deployment policyonly allows for twostipendiary posts acrossthese three benefices). ThisTeam would be very similarin size and structure to theneighbouring Melbury Team(the villages that lie mainlybetween the Yeovil toDorchester Road and theDorchester to CrewkerneRoad), also in the SherborneDeanery, which we knowworks very well.

We believe that a newTeam Rector’s role withinthe proposed Team would bevery attractive because of thesize of the job and increasedcapacity made possible bythe higher level ofpopulation. Thereforerecruitment potentially

shouldn’tbe such anissue.

Anynewpastoralschemeof thissortinvolves extendedformal consult-ation. However, although wearen’t at this stage yet, wewant to start talking to theparishes as soon as possible.

To this end I havealready had a meeting withrepresentatives from theVale of the White Hart inFolke church and a meetingis being planned with all ofthe CWs in the threebenefices concerned. TheDeanery Synod StandingCommittee have a key rolein forming any proposedplans and therefore GilWilliams, the Deanery LayChair, and The Rev'dGraham Perryman the RuralDean (also Team Rector ofthe Melbury Team) inparticular are closelyinvolved. This secondmeeting will enable us toexplain the thinking morefully, explore the questionsand concerns that people willbring and receive reflectionsand observations. The Venerable Paul Taylor

Yetminster Methodist Church - A Misunderstood Woman

Several churches in this area arededicated to St Mary Magdalene. This Mary is a much misunderstood

woman. She is usually regarded as areformed harlot, and in Christian art she isdepicted in red in contrast to the virginalblue of Mary the mother of Jesus. In the1927 silent film “King of Kings” MaryMagdalene was portrayed as a brazencourtesan with a chariot drawn by zebras. In one dramatic scene Jesus was showncasting out from her the Seven Deadly Sins.

But the statement in Luke’s Gospel thatJesus delivered Mary from seven devilssuggests a severe mental illness rather thanan immoral character. Nor is there anywarrant for identifying this Mary with theunnamed penitent sinner who washed thefeet of Jesus with her tears.

So when we see the name St Mary Magdalene we should think of all thosewho suffer from some form of mentalillness. There are many such people in oursociety, and it is often a distressingcondition to witness. Jan Struther, whenasked to contribute a hymn for St MaryMagdalene’s feast day on 22 July forinclusion in “Songs of Praise”, struck theright note when he wrote of Mary as

“demon-haunted…..by her neighboursmocked and taunted”. That verse ends asfollows:

“Banish, Lord our minds’ confusion;Fear and fever drive away;Down the valley of illusion;Spread the kindly light of day”.

We can all say amen to that.Dennis Tackley

April 2012

When we look back at April 2012,the poet’s promise of a change tomore summery weather seems to havebeen over-optimistic. April was colderthan March, and torrential rainfall ledto complaints that this must be the

‘wettest drought in history’.Rainfall

There were only 3 rain-free days inApril - a month when we expect atleast 17. Many parts of the countrywere wetter than they have ever beenat this time of the year. Leigh got offmore lightly, with 189 mm (7.4”), ratherless than our April 2000 record of 210mm (8.3”). Even so, it was a massiveincrease on April 2011’s meagre 7.3mm (0.3”). Our total rainfall for the firstfour months of 2012 has soared to 271mm (10.7”) - only 2% less than theaverage for 2000-2011. There may stillbe what is technically a drought - butthe ground is no longer quite so dry.Temperatures

April was 16% cooler than usual,averaging only 7.7 C (46F). We had 8

frostsinstead oftheseasonal 6,and thecoldestnight fell to-4.3 C (24F).Thewarmestday couldnot evenachieve 17 C (62F), so it was well downon the usual 21.4 C (71 F).Sunshine

March was the second sunniestsince our records began in 2000.Nature had its revenge by making Aprilthe second dullest. There were only 89hours of sunshine - 35% less than usual. The sun shone for 21% of the day, instead of April’s usual 33%.Winds

Wind speeds in April peaked at 39mph, with an average maximum of20mph, making the month 6% windierthan usual. They were generallySoutherly, so they brought some verydamp air.Pressure

Barometric pressure in Aprilaveraged 1007 mm, the lowest wehave ever recorded for the month.

…gone gardening

Since opening my plant centre atBailey Ridge eight weeks ago our catBebe has become a regular visitorthinking as he obviously does that wecreated the centre purely for hisamusement. If he wanders into thebedding tunnel where I keep all my mostprecious delights, he will find a spot to liedown close to me while I am potting upor propagating and occasionally flick histail in my face or walk straight over thepropagating bench. How is it that a catalways knows when you don’t wantthem hangingaround? Not thatI don’t love mycat, he is a lovelylittle Tabby boy,but yesterday Icaught himsprawled on somebeautifulornamental grassesthat I had bought infor a customer. When I tried tostraighten up the long wispythreads of grass he popped out of themplayfully and then rolled. He waited untilI had straightened them again andjumped out at me. Perhaps he thinks thatthese grasses are his natural habitat, hereon the Dorset hills just like his buddies thelions on the Serengeti plains!!! When Iwatered my shrub and herbaceous linesI found him pushing his nose and fallingaround in the catmint. ‘Drat that cat!’ Iblared or some such otherexpletive….and sprayed him with thehosepipe. That was the last I saw of him.

On cool days he can be found in thecabin where we sell our garden essentials. He has found a cosy bed on top of a pile

of jute hangingbasket liners. Idon’t mind thattoo much but theother day he hotfooted his wayover to me with alive mouse hangingout of his mouth. He was bringing me apresent I supposed but instead ofbringing it to my feet he took it into thecabin and promptly dropped the

perishing thing.Of course themouse ranaway very fastand hidweaving hisway betweenthe gardentools, potsandparaphernalia. Bebefollowed it, I

thought I had best notinterfere. Let him deal with it. Ten minuteslater Bebe swaggered out. He had lostthe mouse and all interest. Suddenly, itwas Coco to the rescue! What a dog!Coco is our chocolate Labrador and shehas a good nose and could smell themouse. Oh what a faithful and obedienthound she is! She went straight into thecabin, caught the mouse and took itoutside. Little wonder that a dog is knownas ‘man’s best friend’.

SPOTLIGHT on our communityVoices from the Old Vicarage - Geoffrey Perry

I had the great pleasure ofmeeting this delightful 83 year oldgentleman at the Old Vicarage andhearing recollections of his life sheepfarming at Church Farm, Hilfield.Geoffrey was one of nine childrenborn at West Chelborough, Evershotand comes from a long line offarmers. His father, Wilfred, was adiary farmer whomade and soldcheddar cheese. Hismother, Agnes, was avicar’s daughter.Although Geoffreyliked school his reallove was farming, especially anything todo with tractors. Geoffrey told mehe and his siblings wereall brought up in aloving environment butwere expected to workand pull their weight on thefarm as they grew up. The childrendidn’t get into any trouble becausethey were always busy and hadplenty of playmates within the family.Unfortunately one brother drownedin a local pond near the Priory afterwhich tragedy his mother insisted allthe children learn how to swim.Geoffrey left school at 14 and wentto work straight away on the farm.He loved to go out at night withgreyhounds and a lamp and catchrabbits for the pot. During the War alandmine fell onto the farm, missing

the cattle in the next field butpeppering the haystack withshrapnel. Geoffrey remembers howthey were picking pieces out of thestack for a very long time!

As a young man Geoffrey likedtaking tractors apart and mendingthem and, in order to learn moreabout tractors and welding,

Geoffrey and a friendwould travel toWeymouth oneevening a week toattend the TechnicalCollege. This wasafter his day’s workon the farm andstood him in verygood stead whenhe eventuallyretired as he wouldcontinue to dowelding jobs forfriends. He told me

“if you enjoy what you do it makes allthe difference and you just want tolearn more.”

Geoffrey met his late wife, Jenny,at a local dance and when heretired they moved to a bungalow inSparkford. He enjoys going on theoutings arranged by the staff at theOld Vicarage, listening to the radioand watching farming programmes. His is visited by his brothers and sisters, most of whom live locally and toldme he is very contented with his life.

Leigh Short Mat BowlsThe Leigh Short MatBowls held its Annual

General Meetingin the VillageHall on 23 April.

It was wellattended with 19 members present. TheCommittee members were all voted back inbut we were sad to lose our Chairman whodecided not to stand again due to othercommitments. We are now looking for anew Chairman. We finished with tea andhome made cakes and then two hours ofbowls for those who wished to stay.

The past year has been a good one forthe Club with both the Monday afternoonand the Thursday evening sessions beingwell attended though we would bedelighted to welcome new players to swellour numbers

We are very lucky to be able to play insuch a beautiful hall whether it is in thewinter with the curtains drawn and the heatturned up or in the summer with the patiodoors flung open and the sunshine floodingin.

We have a Social Evening once a yearwhich is always good fun with lots of goodfood and drink and different bowling games. It is usually held in November.

We play in a relaxed and friendlyatmosphere and it is good to see howquickly newcomers to the game improvewith advice and help from the moreexperienced.

If you wish to come along on eitherMonday or Thursday then either just call inand give it a go or call Morag Orchard(secretary) on 01963 210619.

Over recent monthsregular requests havebeen made both bymembers of the Club andthe public for a local

“Gardeners Question Time”type event to beorganised. So “Meet yourGarden Club” wasarranged. It was reallymore of a gardeningforum that took place on21 April in ChetnoleVillage Hall when anumber of local

“experts”, together withrepresentatives fromCastle Gardens inSherborne, the RSPB and

the Dorset Wildlife Trust, made themselvesavailable to answerquestions on a one-to-one basis. The subjectsranged from pruning topests, from bird feedingto the propagation ofheathers and from newtsto giant magnolias.Among the numberpresent were around 20children who hugelyenjoyed the “TallestSunflower” seed plantingcompetition (results atChetnole Flower Show on4 August). They alsotook home a black bag,

compost and a seedpotato with the object ofcontributing to a futuredinner. Judging by thenoise and laughter fillingthe hall, the afternoonwas a greatsuccessand itwouldnotbesurprising ifthis eventwere tobecome aregularfixture.Tom Withycombe

If I were to ask youto name two plants

which areunsurpassed intheir floweringperiod, are showy, vibrant, rich invariety and shape

and are easy to grow,of course you wouldknow the answer.Your parents andgrandparentsprobably grew themin abundance; they

knew worthwhile plantswhen they saw them. What

else could they be other than theChrysanthemum and the Dahlia? Inever used to like them much, but it’sstrange how fashion can turn your head. They are now enjoying a well-deservedreturn to popularity, and I am crazyabout them! My only sorrow was tomiss what I know will have been a veryinteresting talk given by Bryan Madders,a renowned National Dahlia Societyjudge, at our May meeting.

Mr Madders is a man on a mission. He probably knows all there is to knowabout growing these splendid beautiesand he came to share his knowledge.Chrysanthemums are easy to grow andhis message is that we ought to startbeing much more adventurous bycreating our own unique colouredplants.

Mr Madders has a wealth of helpfuladvice on propagating new plants, andit’s clear from talking to him that thereis huge pleasure to be had from raisingnew and exciting varieties. “Pot luck”he says, “but sometimes there issomething really worth keeping!” Thisis particularly true for Dahlias wherewe can create new varieties andcolours from seeds of establishedplants. “Have some fun and push theboundaries” he says.

There was a promise of colourfulslides and some very worthwhileinformation. Even though I wasn’tthere to hear it all, what I do know isthat Mr Madders is very successful withhis techniques. He describes it as hisway for ‘relaxation’ but he has won allmanner of awards for his protégés.Someone will have to fill me in when Iget back from holiday.

The Wriggle ValleyJuniorsACT 4 2010 - 2012 -Join us

During 2010 we decidedto change our group slightly. We wanted to includeteenagers who were notgetting the chance toperform elsewhere. It wasdecided to continue withthe Junior Wriggle ValleyPlayers meeting weekly andto add another group forthe teenagers on a Sundayevening. We also plan toinclude teenagers in ourgroup for a rock musicalversion of Romeo and Julietat Leigh Village Hall inDecember 2010

What a success! Withsupport from Popeye andThe Pixies a local rock banda modern version of aShakespeare classic hit thestage.

For this summer, due tothe previous success of

running twogroups together, we choseCider with Rosie, which

went down a stormsupported by localmusicians. The profits fromthis show will be splitbetween Yetminster Scouts,Leigh Brownies and sponsorof a student going to workin an orphanage in India.

For those sharp eyed ofyou who attended the adultsection’s very successfulpantomime of “Red RidingHood “

you may have spotted quitea few of the old “Juniors” inthe cast, including AmyGoodfellow who was a

marvellous lead asgranddaughter of RedRiding Hood.

So the original aims ofthe junior group to helpyoung children developtheir confidence andintroduce them to the joysand experiences that dramacan offer are paying off.

So what’s next? Well…the Junior Group are busyrehearsing their summerproduction “Cinderella andRockerfella”.

So if you have a childbetween the ages of 5 – 11who interested in joiningour group, or you areinterested yourself why notcome along!

Tuesday ClubWe were all sorry to

hear that quite a few of ourmembers were unable toattend because of illnessespecially as they missedsuch an intriguing afternoon.

AGOG in Dorset was thetitle of our May meetinggiven by Michael Bolton. We soon learnt that Agogstood for Assorted GemsOddities and Gardens andon this occasion Mike choseto entertain us with theOddities.

One oddity that wehave all seen, wonderedabout and seen variousexplanations of is the redsign posts in various places.Mike explained to us thatthey were erected as a signto warders escortingprisoners through thecounty that there was asecure barn nearby wherethe party could stay for the

night. Among hisfascinating slides was agroup of towers, such as theHardy Monument, HortonTower and Clavell Tower, but, despite it being solocal, few of us recognisedthe interestingly shapedwater tower at StAnthony’s Leweston, though we all knew theNissen Hut type houses atRyme Intrinseca. Delightfullittle oddities included thepig on the top of theparking sign at TollerPorcorum and the villagestocks and HexagonalVictorian post box both atHolwell. Slides of oldphotographs and post cardsshowed us Sandbanks withonly three visible housesand railway stations such asLyme Regis, Toller and thePortland railway, long sinceClosed.

I think we all cameaway from the meetingdetermined to keep oureyes open so as not to missso many of the oddities thatour county contains.

On Tuesday 12 June wehave the great treat ofBonnie Sartin talking about

“The Lot of the DorsetLabourer”. Don’t miss yourchance to hear this – nonmembers are alwayswelcome.

Sylvia Bryan

Wriggle Valley Women’s GroupWe welcomed Christine Shaw to

our open meeting at Chetnole VillageHall on 17 April. Her talk was entitledthe “Spitzbergen Explorer”and shebegan by painting a picture usingwords of the Arctic and went on to tellus that the aim of the trip was to findand photograph a polar bear. Veryquickly it became obvious that luckwas on their side and they saw manyover the period of the trip. The polarbear is the earth’s largest predatorweighing up to 35 stone and standing14 foot tall on hind legs!! After

describing the trip in fascinatingdetail we were then shown herwonderful photos.

The Yetminster History Society

Fifteen members of the YetminsterHistorical Society gathered in May for a visitto Glastonbury Abbey and although therewere threatening clouds we were very luckywith the weather. After somewhat of amystery, but very pleasant, tour downSomerset country lanes we arrived at theAbbey which was founded in the 7thcentury and which, by the 14th century, wasone of the richest and most powerfulmonasteries in England controlling largetracts of surrounding land as well as beinginstrumental in major drainage projects onthe Somerset Levels.

Despite efforts to protect it, thedissolution of the monasteries under HenryVlll means that it is now on only a shell ofwhat it once was. However, with the help ofour excellent guides we were able to bringto life the times and activities of the monkswho worshipped there and to have someidea of how important the site had been. Asis well known, the Glastonbury area isfrequently associated with the legend ofKing Arthur and we saw the place where itis alleged that he was buried with his wife,Guinevere. Christian legends have alsoclaimed that the original place of worship

was founded by Joseph of Arimathea in the1st century.

After lunch in the town we went on tovisit the Somerset Museum of Rural Lifewhich is in a magnificent fourteenth-century Abbey Barn on the edge of the town. This, and the farm buildings surrounding thecourtyard, contain displays illustrating thetools and techniques of farming in VictorianSomerset and included unusual localactivities like willow growing, mud horsefishing, peat digging and cider making. Offurther interest, in the reconstructed roomsof the adjacent farmhouse, was a displayoutlining the social and domestic life ofJohn Hodges, a typical Victorian farmworker which certainly put into perspectiveour present economic and social difficulties.

The Society always welcomes newmembers so please come along if you areinterested - our meetings are detailed in themagazine’s diary page.

As I sat down to write this shortarticle, I thought how quickly timepasses, here I am writing about theWriggle Valley Players’ nextpantomime and it was only a fewmonths ago thatwe performedthe last one. It’sonly thebeginning ofJune you couldsay, but thereading of thepanto,

“Sleeping Beauty”is on Monday 18June, withauditions thefollowingWednesday andMonday(20th/25thJune). You mayask, why soearly, the pantoperformancesare not until theend of January2013? Theanswer is thatthere is so muchpreproduction toorganise and the usual stalwartmembers of the players are alreadygearing into action.

This is my first time directing theWVPs (although I have directed playsand pantos in my pre-Dorset life) and Iam looking forward to the experience.Although panto can be hard work, it’salso great fun for those taking partboth on stage and behind the scenesand the audiences are always veryappreciative of our efforts. This

slightly different version of the oldfairy tale of Sleeping Beauty has alarge cast and it would be a greatopportunity to have some new faces onstage, as well as our trusted WVP

veterans.Of course, I

would like thisproduction tobe one of thebest, so I wouldlove to see asmany new

“would beactors/singers”as possible atthe auditions. So if you canact, sing – evenif you can’t,but havealways wantedto appear onstage or justhelp behind thescenes, whynot come alongto ChetnoleVillage Hall at7:30pm on oneof the followingdates?

Monday 18June Panto readingWednesday 20 June 1st auditionMonday 25 June 2nd audition

If you are unable to make any ofthe above dates, but would like to beinvolved, contact our Chairman, JohnHouse on 07970819681 and I willarrange to see you.
