    Background

Welded joints with complex geometries are widely used throughout thePower Industry (Nuclear and Fossil) and the Oil and Gas Industry. These

sectors place a great emphasis on energy efficiency and safety throughperiodic inspection programmes, cooperation with independent regulatorsand compliance with standards (eg BS 7910). The positive drivers to do soinclude increasing safety, lowering operating costs and reducingenvironmental impacts. As a consequence, and due to the critical nature ofwelded joints such as nozzles, regular service inspections are carried out inorder to verify their integrity and fitness for service (FFS).

In support of this requirement, the proposed project aims to improveinspection procedures to verify the integrity of welds on complex geometryfittings such as nozzles via the development of a generic inspectionmethod using phased array ultrasonic inspection (PAUT).

Improved Integrity of Welded Joints with Complex Geometry

    Objectives

Provide a generic methodology for applying phased array inspection (field operation and advancedequipment) to variable configuration nozzle components and establish its range of application.

Evaluate and establish inspection coverage and detection capabilities for phased array inspections.

    Project Outcome

Generic methodologies document for applying phased array technology for the inspection of nozzleconfigurations based on field and advanced equipment.

A capability statement based on theoretical and experiment evidence of each methodology to establishtheir performance on selected nozzle configurations.

    Benefits

Increased joint reliability by providing an improved and qualified inspection method.

      Reduced outage times.

Increased safety by establishing a more effective inspection tool to determine weld quality.

Savings by reducing cost of equipment investment (evaluating and selecting the optimum inspectiontechnique and tools)

    Participants

    The Sponsor Group currently comprises:

      EDF

      ESKOM

      PETROBRAS

      ENSA

    Scope of Work

There are two aspects which this work programme aims to address:

NDT methodology for the inspection of variable configuration components.

Capability statement of the procedure developed to detect and size flaws.

Improved Integrity of Welded Joints with Complex Geometry

    Price and Duration

The project has commenced with an initial budget of £304,000 (equivalent to four sponsors), based on thescope described above, and it will be carried out over a period of two years. The cost of the full project is£380,000, and will include additional experimental trials, in addition to the work outlined above. To carry outthe full project scope five sponsors are required.
