The mere mention of Venice immediately conjures romantic images: quaintscenes of lovers on gondolas, slowly drifting down a tranquil canal. In reality, these fabled waterways are often polluted, flooding, traversed by commutersand tourists on modern waterbuses, and yes, quite lovely and astonishing.Experiencing a city without automobiles will be a new adventure for mostvisitors -- Venice is the largest car-free zone in Europe! There are plentyof connecting streets or footbridges for those who avoid using boats. Ofcourse, there is more to Venice than just the canals. This city has a rich andremarkably complex history; in the past, it was not only a city, it was theRepublic of Venice, an independent state and a pivotal center of internationaltrade, which tended to complicate its relations with other bodies. Now thatthis remarkable city has joined Italy (more than 200 years ago), it continuesto charm visitors with its lovely architecture, music, exuberant Carnival, andworld-famous Biennale art exhibition. However, you might have to act fast –after all, the city is sinking, and an alarming number of Venetians…[read more on www.tripwolf.com]

Introduction

24 hours in Veniceby martin_F

Death in Venice - today, the city of canals has little in common with thedreamlike setting of Thomas Mann's famous novella. One is more likelyto encounter throngs of tourists who have opted to spend their vacationcirculating through the streets in unhealthy numbers. A short trip to the GrandCanal can still be a fantastic experience, especially if you can make it to someof the sights off the beaten path.

The large, lustrous, marble-white Santa Maria della Salute is an idealstarting point for a tour of discovery. This votive church, built after one ofthe era's many plagues, features everything that distinguishes the Baroquearchitecture of Venice - and on a vast scale.

The Piazza San Marco (if it isn't under water again) is at once a glamorousespresso catwalk, a tourist detention center, and a loo for doves. An elevatorride up to the bell floor of the famous campanile yields a glorious view of thecity. If you are interested in architecture, you should definitely check out St.Mark's Basilica. This church, built nearly one thousand years ago, epitomizesByzantine architecture, particularly the more than 4,000 square meters ofmosaics - singular décor indeed, and best admired from the gallery.

The colossal Doge's Palace once signaled the considerable political cloutof the city of canals. A tour of the interior is unquestionably a remarkableexperience; those in a hurry should make sure to observe the fancifulcharacters and scenes on the lunettes and arches of the facade.

Crowds and bottlenecks always define the Rialto Bridge, yet thisquintessential symbol of Venice - until the 19th century the only pedestrianbridge on the Grand Canal - is still a feast for the eyes. However, in Do Mori -Venice's oldest wine bar - you may well encounter a few authentic Venetians.Order a glass of wine and some tramezzini - tasty sandwiches - and you can'tgo wrong.

www.tripwolf.com your travel guide 10

Or if the obligatory gelato is more your style, try Alaska, the smallest and mosteccentric ice cream shop in the city. With any luck, the amusing flavors likeasparagus and licorice are still keeping the tourists at arm's length.

Likewise not on the standard itinerary of a city tour of Venice - but definitelyworth a look - is the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, where 56 incrediblepaintings by the genius Tintoretto in their original setting will take your breathaway.

Evening is upon us - there's hardly a better place in Venice for splendid fishin a variety of creations than at Restaurant Da Alberto.

On the other hand, as a locale for nightlife, the city of canals only offers somuch. Wanton and sweaty revelry is to be found here and there, though, forinstance at Café Blue or at the Piccolo Mondo. Those who cannot do withoutthat Ibiza vibe can take a vaporetto (water bus) to the party beaches of theLido.

A tip: Taking a vaporetto on the Grand Canal is (especially for those disinclinedto walk) a stunning experience but not an inexpensive one. A single ride costs6.50 Euros, the flexible water taxi begins its fare at 13 Euros, with every minutecosting 1.8 Euros.

Piazza San Marco

Napoleon's opinion that this was the "most beautiful salon in the world" haslost none of its validity 200 years later. The 175 m long, slightly trapezoidSt. Mark's Square is indeed unique, and the range of moods which oneexperiences in it over the course of the day or through the change of seasons,is enormous. It has been the scene of countless processions and very worldlyfestivities. Up to the present day, the Square is a vanity fair for locals andvisitors alike. And, during the rare moments on foggy winter days or very lateat night when, abandoned by the usual masses, it is tranquil, it serves as amagical setting for solitary dreamers. The buildings which line this square, whose form remains just as it was 800 years ago, are described elsewherein this book. Here one can simply recommend that the visitor emulate pastgenerations of travellers by strolling across the square with its arcades andluxury stores, and take in the unceasing wave of humanity and this uniquebackdrop.

Basilica di San Marco

The entrancing magnificence of this church with five domes, and arches andwindows with hand-carved ornamentation, the origins of which date backaround 1000 years, is the result of numerous extensions and conversions. The core of the church remains the structure erected in the 11th century inthe shape of a Greek cross in which at one time the city's defining relic, thebones of St Mark which were stolen from Alexandria, was kept. Entire librarieshave been filled with descriptions of this unique shrine to art. Here we areforced to confine ourselves to the main attractions: the incomparable stonemosaics, sadly covered to a large extent by carpets, in the choir area (accesswith a separate ticket on the right via the Cappella di San Clemente) therichly ornamented iconostasis, the high altar with the sarcophagus of St Mark,Sansovino's sacristy door and his bronze figures, the most precious piece, thePala d'Oro - a retable made between the 10th and 14th centuries of gold andenamel, inlaid with hundreds of jewels. And, of course, the splendid mosaics:Covering an area of over 4000 m2 they depict scenes from the Old and…[read more on www.tripwolf.com]

Palazzo Ducale

The palace of palaces, the centre of political and legislative power, the highestsymbol of Venetian civilisation, and a motif in every veduta. Over a periodof almost 1000 years, 120 Doges held the reins of Venice's destiny. Thecomplex, which comprises three wings with lengths of between 70 and 100 m,was mainly given its present, Gothic form, in the 14th and early 15th centuries. The marble-clad façade alone, the lower areas of which are ornamentedwith countless delicate columns and arches, merits the greatest admiration. You should also make note of the beautiful sculptures "Adam and Eve", and"Noah's Drunkenness" on the corners of the south wing, and the charmingscenes on each one of the dozens of column capitals. A tour of the inside ofthe Doge's palace is completely overwhelming. It starts opposite the Loggettaand the campanile with its High Gothic main door, the Porta della Carta, through which one enters the inner courtyard dominated by a double-storeytriumphal arch, the Arco Foscari, and the Scala dei Giganti, which guardsJacopo Sansovino's statues of Neptune and Mars. Ponte di Rialto

Busy statisticians have counted more than 400 bridges which help to crossaround 150 canals in Venice and connect over 100 islands. Some areunnamed, others inconspicuous. Some are specially important in terms oftraffic or cultural history, others are famous as meeting places or photographicmotifs - above all the Rialto Bridge. For centuries, this was the commercialcentre of this trading metropolis. The sea traders unloaded their goods here, and this is where the leading banks and trading houses were based. Originallymade of wood, by the end of the 16th century, the bridge which connects thedistricts of San Marco and San Polo was rotten, and was replaced by onemade of Istrian stone. In the mid 19th century it was the only pedestrian routeacross the Canal Grande. It was built by one Antonio da Ponte whose ratherungainly but very solid design, which allowed ample space for ships to pass, won out over designs by more prominent competitors such as Michelangelo,Palladio, Sansovino and Scamozzi.
