You may only be in the entertainment capital of the world for a short time but you’ll no doubt want to get the most out of your visit. We’ve created this guide to help you do just that! We’d love to tell you that you’ll be able to see everything Las Vegas has to offer in 24 hours, but unfortunately that’s just not the case. We’ve come up with a guide to our ‘must sees’ to help you know where to start and narrow down your options. You may not be able to see everything but that shouldn’t mean you miss out on Las Vegas’ best bits.

At the end of the guide, you will find a directory of all the places we have mentioned so you know where to find them and how to get in touch if you want to find out more.

How to use this guideFirst, you’ll see our ‘top tips’ section. These are just a few notes to help you on your way, before you’ve even stepped foot on the strip.

The rest of the guide is then split into four sections:

This is so you can either plan your whole day, or just dip in and out when you’ve got a couple of hours free, no matter what time it is.

Symbol keyThroughout the guide, you’ll see a number of symbols. These are to help you quickly identify the following things:

At American Sky, we offer a number of holiday options if you’d like to visit Las Vegas. You can choose to stay in one of the city’s fabulous hotels through one of our packages, or alternatively, we run a number of tours that stop off in the city, including the American Sky Western Discovery Tour.

Consider a hotel on the stripIf you’re serious about seeing as much of Vegas as you can in 24 hours, consider booking a hotel on the sunset strip. These are generally more expensive but you’ll find it a lot easier to get to some of the city’s main attractions at short notice. You can arrange your stay at a number of hotels on the strip through American Sky.

Pace yourselfIt can be easy to wonder where the time goes in Vegas, particularly as many of the hotels and casinos don’t have clocks inside them. Keep hydrated and grab power naps where you can if you want to make the most of the vibrant night life.

Wear comfortable shoesIf you’re hoping to see as much as you can of glittering Las Vegas then wearing shoes you know you can clock up the miles in is vital. Wearing stilettos may look fabulous, but your feet will thank you for being sensible.

Use the busesTaxis don’t stop along the strip, while various buses do. Grab a 24 hour bus ticket to help you save money, rather than shelling out on lots of single tickets.

Casino dos and don’tsIf you’re planning on having a little flutter during your brief stay in Vegas, here are a few ‘dos and don’ts’ to bear in mind:

Plan aheadThis is particularly important if you’re planning on seeing a show in the evening. Check out what’s on beforehand and make sure your tickets are booked to avoid disappointment. There’s no need to be too rigid about things, but it’s important to know what you don’t want to leave Vegas without seeing. Our guide is here to help you do just that.

Breakfast

If you’re going for a full day (and night) of exploring Las Vegas, you’ll want to stock up on a good breakfast. Many of the hotels on the strip offer fabulous breakfast buffets, with a big range in price. Our advice is to go for what you can afford. Some of the prices may seem too good to be true, and fairly often they are.

Aside from all the hotels, there are tons of other diners where you can grab an early morning bite. Pancakes, eggs, fruit, even burgers – whatever you’re hungry for, you’re sure to find an eatery serving up some delectable delights to keep you going until lunch time.

Casinos & Attractions

Now you’re fully fuelled and ready to go, make the most of the early (ish) morning when the strip is at its quietest. There will still be plenty of people about (it’s always interesting trying to spot those who haven’t been to bed yet) but it should be a little less hectic than mid-afternoon. With only 24 hours in a city like Vegas, you don’t want waste your time queuing. Head to the slot machines and tables of whichever casino takes your fancy.

If you’re a gambling beginner, strolling up to the tables as a newbie can be a daunting prospect. As we mentioned in our ‘Casino dos and don’ts’, you should have a grasp of the basics before you sit at the table. A number of casinos offer a timetable of free gaming lessons – we’ve selected a few suggestions for you on the right.

If you don’t fancy a flutter, or have reached the limits of your gambling budget, why not head to one of the city’s many attractions before midday. At Circus Circus you’ll find the world’s largest permanent circus, plus a five-acre indoor theme park in the attached Adventuredome. Thrill-seekers can try the New York New York rollercoaster, while marine life fans should definitely not miss the Mandalay Bay Shark Reef Aquarium.

Culture, Shopping & the Great Outdoors

Museums and galleries may not be the first association you make with Las Vegas, but the afternoon is a great time to escape the hectic crowds of the casinos and head to one of the city’s galleries or museums.

Alternatively, if you’re looking to spend your afternoon flashing your hard-earned winnings from the casino, or just want to partake in a little window shopping if Lady Luck hasn’t been looking down on you favourably, then Vegas is not a bad place to be at all. Celebrity-spotting, world-renowned restaurants, designer shops, intimate boutiques, outlet malls and even romantic gondola rides: Las Vegas is a shoppers’ paradise.

If the bright lights are making you a bit dizzy and you feel the need for some fresh air, but want to make it back in time for a fabulous evening meal, then the half-hour drive from the strip to the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is well worth it, providing the weather is on your side. Although you could easily spend a day exploring the miles of hiking and cycling trails, a close-up look at the stunning red sandstone rock formations is a great way to grab an hour of fresh air.

Grab some grub

Your humungous breakfast will probably seem like an age ago after a day of making the most of your time in Vegas. If you’re feeling the need to refuel in style, then try the Top of the World restaurant at Stratosphere Las Vegas. Here you can enjoy the sights of the city from 844ft in the air at the only revolving restaurant in Vegas. As you’d expect, an experience here doesn’t come cheap and booking in advance is definitely advisable.

If you’re looking for a proper sit down meal but are after something a little more affordable, The Steak House at Circus Circus offers award-winning food, great service and a traditional steakhouse setting, all at a reasonable price.

If you missed out on a hotel buffet at breakfast, now could be your chance. Whichever hotel on the strip you happen to be near will probably offer a buffet for a reasonable cost – although our advice is to beware of prices that seem too good to be true.

See a show

The evening is the perfect time to soak up the sights of Las Vegas: as the sun goes down, the lights come on. Head down the strip to see the lightbeam of the Luxor, the replica Big Apple skyline of New York New York, the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe of Paris Las Vegas, the simulation of Venice at the Venetian, the Bellagio Water Fountains, and, of course, the fabulous ‘Welcome to Las Vegas’ sign in all its illuminated glory.

For many of us, seeing a stage show is as synonymous with Vegas as trying your luck at the slots. Some of the very popular resident shows, such as Cirque du Soleil’s The Beatles Love at the Mirage, sell out on various nights. Avoid disappointment by booking online in advance. This is particularly pertinent if you’re on a budget, as the cheaper tickets sell out before the more expensive ones.

There are plenty of big buck shows to choose from, including illusionist shows, ballad-busting headliners, huge production spectacles, long-running Broadway musicals, and even adult shows if you’re feeling particularly fruity. If you’ve been lucky enough to bag a free ticket as part of your comps during the morning in a casino, then your decision of where to go is already made! What is on where will depend on when you are travelling, so we suggest having a good look around on the web before stepping foot on the plane.

Lounges & Bars

If your budget won’t quite stretch to one of the huge stage shows Vegas offers, all is not lost. Many hotels along the strip will have their own lounge, offering you the chance to see a variety of acts, often for only a small charge, or even free. These lounges and bars give you the chance to experience the fabulous nightlife that this city has to offer, without the queues and crowds of the large nightclubs.

Which lounge you choose will depend on what you’re after – but most offer a nightly programme of various genres of music. You’ll find Elvis impersonators, live jazz and swing music, high-tech sensory experiences, duelling pianos and even a bar in the shape of a barge. Pull up a chair, get yourself a cocktail, sit back and enjoy the music.

Clubs

Still going strong? We admire your stamina. If you’re still looking for something new to do before hitting the hay (or catching your flight), then what could be better than experiencing the vibrant nightlife Vegas has up its sleeve?

If you’re looking for somewhere to cut some shapes with the young, free and single, there are a couple of things to bear in mind before heading out the door:

Clubbing in Vegas is not for the faint-hearted, but if it’s what you are after, there is plenty to choose from.

Clubbing in Vegas is not cheap. Expect to pay a cover charge of around $20 at the most popular clubs, double it if you want to queue jump. For drinks, you’ll be looking at around $10 a popQueues for the popular clubs can get pretty lengthy. If you are not keen on standing in the street for a couple of precious hours when you could be dancing the night away, it might be worth spending extra on a VIP ticket that gets you in without having to queueSome clubs will only be open on the weekend: Thursday to SundayTake note of the dress code. Some clubs are stricter than others when it comes to what to wear. If in doubt, ladies, you can’t go far wrong with a little black dress
