Story
Questions to discuss:After reading the story together, you could discuss these questions as a family:1. Can you think of three rules that keep you safe on the roads?2. What did God tell Moses that the people needed to do to keep safe?3. What were the people instructed to eat? (see story to colour)4. How does God keep you safe?
New Living TranslationMoses called all the elders of Israel together and said to them, “Go, pick out a lamb or young goat for each ofyour families, and slaughter the Passover animal. Drain the blood into a basin. Then take a bundle of hyssopbranches and dip it into the blood. Brush the hyssop across the top and sides of the doorframes of your houses. And no one may go out through the door until morning. For the Lord will pass through the land to strike down theEgyptians. But when he sees the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe, the Lord will pass over your home.He will not permit his death angel to enter your house andstrike you down.“Remember, these instructions are a permanent law that youand your descendants must observe forever. When youenter the land the Lord has promised to give you, you willcontinue to observe this ceremony. Then your children willask, ‘What does this ceremony mean?’ And you will reply,‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, for he passed overthe houses of the Israelites in Egypt. And though he struckthe Egyptians, he spared our families.’” When Moses hadfinished speaking, all the people bowed down to the groundand worshiped. So the people of Israel did just as the Lord had commanded through Moses and Aaron. And that night at midnight, the Lord struck down all the firstborn sons in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sat on histhrone, to the firstborn son of the prisoner in the dungeon. Even the firstborn of their livestock were killed. Pharaohand all his officials and all the people of Egypt woke up during the night, and loud wailing was heard throughoutthe land of Egypt. There was not a single house where someone had not died.Israel’s Exodus from EgyptPharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron during the night. “Get out!” he ordered. “Leave my people—and take the restof the Israelites with you! Go and worship the Lord as you have requested. Take your flocks and herds, as yousaid, and be gone. Go, but bless me as you leave.”

Simple versionGod told Moses and Aaron “Tell the Israelites that I will be passing through Egypt and that the first-born son fromevery family in Egypt will die tonight. To keep their family safe, they must follow these instructions. They mustchoose a healthy one-year old lamb or goat to kill and eatand paint some of the animal’s blood on their door posts. As soon as it becomes dark, they must stay in the house. The meat must be cooked as a special meal and they mustbe fully dressed ready to go on a journey. The blood on their doors will show me that Israelites livethere, they will be safe. This day will be a special festival to the Lord every year. That night, God passed through Egypt and killed all thefirst-born sons in the land. However, the Israelites weresaved and Pharaoh finally let them leave Egypt.
