TIRTHANKARS

SUPARSHVANATH BHAGAVAN – 7 The being that was to be Suparshvanath had done harsh penance and deep spiritual practices in his earlier birth as king Nandisen of Kshetrapuri. He then reincarnated as a god in the sixth Graveyak dimension.

From the dimension of gods this soul descended into the womb of queen Prithvi Devi, wife of king Pratishthasen of Varanasi. During her pregnancy the queen did not lose her normal shapely figure, as generally happens. As her flanks still remained attractive, the child, when born, was named Suparshva.

When Suparshva became young he was married and later ascended the throne. He ably conducted the affairs of he state and looked after the well being of his people. One day while he was enjoying the nature sitting at the roof top, he observed the falling of leaves and wilting of flowers. Suddenly he became aware of the transient nature of life. This gave a rising to the feeling of detachment and desire for spiritual upliftment. He gave his kingdom to his son and became an ascetic. After nine months of disciplined practices he became an omniscient on the sixth day of the dark half of the month of Phalgun. For a long period he worked for the spread of right knowledge. He got liberated on the seventh day of the bright half of he month of Palgun at Sammetshikhar.

CHANDRAPRABH BHAGAVAN - 8

In his birth as king Padma of Mangalavati town of Dhatkikhand, the being that was to become Bhagavan Chandraprabh earned Tirthankar-nam-and-gotra-karma. Spending a life time as a god in Anuttar Vijay dimension he descended into the womb of queen Lakshmana, wife of king Mahasen of Chandranana town.

During her pregnancy, one day the queen was looking at the splendors and glowing full-moon. All of a sudden she had a strange desire to drink the glowing streak of moon light. The king cleverly managed to satisfy this strange desire of a pregnant mother.

On the thirteenth day of the dark half of the month of Paush the queen gave birth to a healthy son who was fair and glowing like the moon. He was named Chandraprabh (glow of the moon).

Chandraprabh was apathetic towards the mundane pleasures and princely grandeur. After he ascended the throne his reign was short lived. He became an ascetic in the prime of his youth and just after three months of acute spiritual practices he became an omniscient. For a considerably long period he continued to enlighten the people and propagate the true religion. When his end approached he went to Sammetshikhar and after a month of long fast and meditation got liberated.

SUVIDHINATH BHAGAVAN - 9

In the tradition started by Bhagavan Rishabhdev the ninth Tirthankar re-established the four pronged religious ford was Bhagavan Suvidhinath During his earlier incarnation as emperor Mahapadma of Pushkalvati Vijay purified his soul to he extant of earning Tirthankar-nam-and-gotra-karma. He took birth in the Vijayant dimension of gods and from there he descended into the womb of queen Rama Devi, wife of king Sugriva of Kakandi town.

During the period of pregnancy queen Rama developed a strange capacity to develop processes for doing even the most difficult of tasks. Everyone got astonished at her skill. When the child was born the king accordingly named him as Suvidhi (correct procedure). During the teething period of the child the mother got a craving for playing with flowers. As such, he was also popularly known as Pushpadant (flower-tooth).

Suvidhinath had a normal princely life, but with detachment. He became an ascetic at an early age and attained omniscience only after four months rigorous spiritual practices. He got Nirvana at Sammetshikhar on the ninth day of the dark half of the month of Kartik.

Extinction of the Religious Ford

The tradition of the four pronged religious ford started by Bhagavan Rishabhdev gradually became extinct after the Nirvana of Bhagavan Suvidhinath. After his death, first the ascetic organization disintegrated and a time came when there was no ascetic left. The religious discourses two were given by common citizens or Shravaks. Slowly the influence of wealth became

Page 5: 23rd Iissue Of UTH-N-YNG Jain Magazine

overpowering and people started forgetting the principals of five vows including Ahimsa and truthfulness. The discipline of spiritual principles gave way to ritualistic exchanges of wealth and total indiscipline

SHEETALNATH BHAGAVAN – 10 The being that was to be Bhagavan Sheetalnath, in his previous but one birth was the king of Susima town in the Pushkarvar island. His name was Padmottar. When his son reached adulthood the religious king gave his kingdom to the son and took Diksha from Tristadha Muni. Vigorous spiritual practices and worship of the pious states as mentioned in the scriptures resulted in his acquiring the Tirthankar-nam-and-gotra-karma. Completing his age he reincarnated as the king of the Pranat dimension of gods. One day due to some strange ailment, king Dridhrath had high fever and acute burning sensation in his body. He did not get any relief even after applying a variety of ointments. Out of anxiety and to comfort the king, the queen put her palm on his body. This mere touch of the queen removed the burning sensation and a feeling of soothing relief swept his body. After this incident the king decided to name the new born as Sheetal (cool/calm). Sheetalnath was born on the twelfth day of the dark half of the month Magh. When he grew older he married at the request of his parents. At proper time, king Dridhrath coronated him and took Diksha. After a long and successful reign Sheetalnath left his home and became an ascetic. He attained omniscience under a Peepal tree on the fourteenth day of the dark half of the month of Paush. After wandering and preaching for a long time, he came to Sammetshikhar and attained Nirvana on the second day of the dark half of the month of Vaishakh.

SHREYANSNATH BHAGAVAN - 11

In his earlier incarnation, the being that was to become Bhagavan Shreyansnath purified his soul as king Nalingulm, and went to the Mahashakra dimension of gods. From there he descended and took birth as Shreyans Kumar, the son of king Vishnuraja and queen Vishnu Devi of Simhapur. Shreyans Kumar was born on the twelfth day of the dark half of the month of Bhadrapad.

He had a normal princely life and ascended the throne when Vishnuraja retired. After a long reign

Shreyans Kumar became a Shraman and within a short span of two months attained omniscience on the fifteenth day of the dark half of the month of Magh under a mango tree. He got Nirvana at Sammetshikhar on the third day of the dark half of the month of Shravan.

It was during his period that the being that was to be Bhagavan Mahavir reigned as the first Vasudev Triprishta. After the death of Triprishtha, his brother Baldev Achal became a disciple of Dharmghosh who was a follower of Shreyansnath. Achal got liberated in this birth.

VASUPUJYA BHAGAVAN -12

Vasupujya was the king of Champa town in the Bharat sub-continent. His queen was Jaya Devi. Besides being a great warrior King Vasupujya was a compassionate and charitable person. The queen too was benevolent and she inspired the king in his charitable activities.

The being that was Padmottar was born to queen Jaya Devi. It is said that when the queen was pregnant, the king of gods came to convey his veneration to the future Tirthankar and his mother. As Indra is also known as Vasu, the new born was named Vasupujya (venerated by Vasu). As Vasupujya grew, so grew his inherent detachment and apathy for mundane affairs. He had no attraction for the regal splendor and grandeur. When he became young his parents wanted him to marry but he declined. He even conveyed that he had no intention of ascending the throne. In spite of all persuasions from his family members, he renounced the worldly life and became a Shraman on the fifteenth day of he dark half of the month of Phalgun along with six hundred other persons.

The intensity of his spiritual practices was so deep that he became an omniscient within one month. At that moment he was practicing under a Patal tree in a garden outside Champa town. He established the four pronged religious ford and preached for a long period. The second Vasudev, Dwiprishtaha, was his devotee. He and his brother Baldev Shrivijay conquered Prativasudev Tark and brought his oppressive rule to an end. Shrivijay later joined the ascetic order of Bhagavan Vasupujya.

Bhagavan Vasupujya got Nirvana in Champa town on the fourteenth day of the bright half of the month of Ashadh.

HOW TO SPEND YOU

VACATION FRUITFULL

My little friends, your exams are over and now your vacations have started. Actually, vacation is an open school which gives you the opportunity to shape your personality and learn various innovative arts and skills. During the vacations, you should have fun; but at the same time you must also try to learn some new things. This is an opportunity given to you by God to find out the skill in which you are lacking and develop it. The one who is constantly in a state of learning is called a student. When you visit any of your relative's house, you should think and find out whether there are any means of learning in their house. For example, if your uncle has a computer, then you can learn things like typing or visiting websites that teach good sanskars (values). Students, if you really want to enjoy the vacation, then remember that real happiness lies in learning new things.

1. Actions for developing physique 1 A. Playing outdoor games : Playing outdoor games like kho-kho, kabaddi, etc. is exercise which keeps our body fit and healthy. 1 A 1. Qualities imbibed : Unity, alertness, leadership, thinking of others, developing judgement, listening to others, etc.

Prayer

'O Jineshwara, I pray at Your Feet to help us make use of this vacation to imbibe good qualities. Help us realise our personality defects and let every action done by us be according to your expectation !'

Help your parents in their work

Throughout the year, your parents help you in your studies and homework. In addition to managing her own household responsibilities, your mother prepares lunch for you and helps you in your studies. So, as a token of gratitude, you too should help her with the household work during your vacation. Our parents do so much for us selflessly. PACKING A BAG OR

SUITCASE EFFICIENTLY

1 Check out the weather at your destination(s)

before you go. Is it going to rain? Pack a rain suit or something that can get wet and dry quickly. If it is going to be hot, pack shorts. Don't forget: Do you need a bathing suit or swim clothes?

2 Plan each day in advance. This will help you decide how many pieces of clothing to take. Too much and you will regret carrying everything.Remember you can always buy a cheap t-shirt or a pair of shorts at your destination. You will regret it if you pack too much, but if you pack too little you can always compensate for it. Remember probably every town you have ever been in has had a laundromat.

3 Pack several lightweight layers. This will work well for both hot and cold weather, as you can add more if you're too cold, and take some off if you're too hot.

4 If you have limited space, do not roll your

shirts, pants, etc. Instead, fold your shirts into squares. Better yet, stack them. In the space you could fit about 3-4 rolled t-shirts, you could fit 5-6 stacked shirts (depending on your suitcase size).

5 Stuff your socks inside your shoes if there is

no other room for them. If you have any other small trinkets, you can put that in your shoes, too.

6 Line the inside of the bag with your t-shirts. This will help distribute the contents.

Page 9: 23rd Iissue Of UTH-N-YNG Jain Magazine

7 Pack fragile items in the center of your case. This way, they are less likely to be broken. If possible, don't bring anything fragile.

8 Put dress shirts on top so that you can

remove them easily for hanging and ironing.

9 Put shoes in a plastic grocery bag. This is so that after you wear them, you can put them away without damaging any other items or making them dirty.

10 Fit the underwear and socks down the sides

once the case is full. This will make sure that you don't fill up valuable space in the middle.

TOP 10 BEACH

DESTINATIONS OF INDIA

Kovalam Beach: One of the prime beaches in India’s beach repertoire, Kovalam in Kerala has always enjoyed the status of being a major tourist spot. Blessed with calm blue waters, sensational rocky outcroppings, palm groves and some spectacular sunsets, this beach draws flocks of tourists and locals. Take a hint and make a beeline for the resorts along the coastal front, which offer access to a private beach to enjoy this picturesque paradise.

Havelock Beach: The legendary colonial past, unexplored shores, incredible corals and marine life make this beach on the Indian Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar islands a favorite soul-soothing retreat.

Mahabalipuram Beach: A world heritage site, Mahabalipuram is renowned for the ancient Shore Temple and rock carvings which sit majestically, close to the beach. Though the beach itself is a little grimy, it offers a pleasant mix of sun, sand and sea food. Set out for this beach laced in history if peddlers and crowds do not bother you.

Bangaram Beach: Nestled, in one of the 36 coral islands of Lakshadweep, off the coast of Kerala, Bangaram beach is famous for its pristine lagoons

4 FINANCIAL BLUNDERS YOU

SHOULD ALWAYS AVOID With markets near their all-time high, investors are confused about how to proceed. 1. Never buy at the peak or sell at the bottom: Intuition tells you to follow trends. We get tricked in by our own emotions driven largely by the crowd. We get exuberant when something is doing well and want to buy more of it and we feel sad when something is not doing well. This makes us to buy high and sell low - the opposite of what we should be doing, resulting in losses. So what should you do? Buy when markets are low and sell when markets are high. Control your emotions and inculcate investment discipline. You are investing for your financial goals, follow the goal schedule. 2. Never forget to review and rebalance your portfolio: Reviewing your portfolio once a year is a must . Rebalancing is an automatic way of buying low and selling high without emotions getting in your way. The solution to point 1 above. But before that, you need to have the asset allocation in place. Determine your risk appetite and build a proportionate allocation of how much money should be invested in equity, debt, real estate, gold and cash. Once this is carried out then on a periodic basis, you should evaluate if your proportion has altered significantly. If it has, then redistribute the money in a way to reflect the original proportions. This is what rebalancing is all about. So what should you do? Rebalance. To do so, more money can be invested in one of the asset classes or money can be withdrawn from the asset which has grown higher and put back into what has grown lower. 3. Never blindly follow advice from neighbours, relatives, insurance agents: Charles Kindleberger, author of Manias, Panics and Crashes says, "There is nothing so disturbing

to one's well being and judgement than to see a friend get rich." And this leads us to take advice from these friends/ family/ relatives. Of course, there is an implicit trust with these members which we depend upon. But then you have to realize what is good for them may not be good for you. And in the case of an insurance agent, you should definitely think twice before following their advice. So what should you do? Friends/Family/Relatives cannot provide you dedicated time to understand your needs or help you in ongoing way. You have different goals and risk taking abilities. And what you invest in should reflect your needs. 4. Never think an unbiased planner is not worth the fee: Mind you, we are talking about an unbiased financial planner or investment advisor and not a broker, distributor who sell you products like equity, insurance, mutual funds. Before you buy a product, you need to have a financial plan in place along with an asset allocation that will determine what should you buy and how much. This is what an independent investment advisor will do for you. An independent investment advisor or planner brings discipline and clarity to the investment process and helps you avoid all the behavioral traps listed above that can impede your ability to realize your financial goals. An independent investment advisor or planner will charge you fees. Do not shy from that as this helps him to maintain the unbiasedness required to build the right plan for you. What should you do? Build a Financial Plan from an unbiased planner as soon as possible.

SEAL YOUR FINANCIAL

LEAKAGES As the famous adage goes, “Change is the only constant in life” Financial planning is not a one-time process. Life, your goals, tax laws, & your financial world have a way of changing, sometimes dramatically. It is quite unfortunate fact that though we spend more than half of our lives working & saving, but we hardly spend any time in contemplating on putting our hard-earned money to work more effectively for us. This approach leads to various Financial Leakages which often causes a financial disaster in the long run. Keeping a regular eye on our personal finances & sealing these financial leakages helps us to make the most of our money. Let us take a resolution in this new year that we take charge of our finances wisely as we alone are the architects of our financial future. Reviewing provides us an early signal & prevents us from potential financial problems. Hence, we have identified few areas that need a regular review to help our financial plan running as planned: Review your Goals- You should review your goals & find out if there are changes in your life, changes in job/increments/ loss, if any of your goals have been achieved; if there have been birth or death in your family, or change in the family size on account of marriage; it makes sense to re-look at the goals & re-set the plan. You should also assure that your saving plan is on track. If you are even not able to save for your high priority goals such as children education, children marriage or retirement then you should curtail your discretionary expenses. Review your Loans- You should review your existing loans & ensure that all loans help you in increasing your net worth (assets- liabilities). In case they do not, you should plan for repaying the same. You should also review that your interest cost on loan is less than return on your investments. If it is not then you should redeem your low yield investments to repay loans. You should also find out the ways to reduce your interest burden. Review your Insurance policies- Insurance is often the most crucial & yet the most overlooked

aspect of financial planning. Though most of us take life insurance or health insurance covers but the amount of cover is usually inadequate. While buying life insurance, you need to consider the immediate, future & living expenses that your family might have to incur in case a tragedy strikes you. The right strategy is to buy pure term insurance with adequate cover. Hence, you should not mix insurance & investment. If you have life insurance policies other than the pure term insurance then, it is time for your to reconsider them. Review your Investments: Year 2012 was characterized by sheer pessimism for the retail investors & hence most of the investors chose to stay away from the markets. However, as a matter of fact, equities generated more than 25% return in the past year, which was the highest among all the asset classes. If we look back, in the year 2008 there was a lot of optimism for equities & in the year 2010, there was a lot of optimism for silver but the returns in these asset classes were substantially negative in those years. Hence, our investment decisions should not be marked by pessimism or optimism about any asset class whereas they should be based on the correct Allocation. Asset Allocation decision involves deciding the percentage of investable funds to be placed in equities, bonds, real estate, gold, & cash equivalents. It is decided on the basis of investors’ return requirements, risk tolerance & the time horizon in conjunction with the expectation about the capital markets & individual asset class. You should also review risk & return of your individual investments & should take corrective measures if it has underperformed the benchmark. Prepare & Review your WILL: Most of the individuals do not opt for making WILL just because they do not possess many assets or are under the impression that they have already made nomination. No doubt, nomination is a great help to successors but the Nominee can hold the assets only in the capacity of a trustee. In such a case, the nominee has to pass the assets to its successors. Hence, it is prudent to write WILL in addition to nomination. An important point to note here is that you have all the rights & privileges over your assets during your life time even after you have written your WILL.
