• If you who intend to use qualifications gained at AMC to undertake a State/Territory or National regulators oral examination to gain a seagoing Certificate of Competency, you should ensure you meet the regulator’s medical standard for employment on board vessels.

• If you have an existing medical condition or health problem and are concerned that this may cause problems with a career at sea, you are strongly advised to undergo the relevant State/Territory or National medical examination PRIOR to giving up employment and travelling to Tasmania to commence studies. A list of approved Medical Inspectors is available on the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) website or that of the relevant State authority. www.amsa.gov.au

What to bring with you:

Personal Protective Equipment

Students will be expected to have the following items before commencing safety course:

• Boiler suit (Overalls) - long sleeved (colour optional) Currently in Australia there are no Standards regarding the wearing or composition/manufacture of overalls.

• Safety Footwear – the Australian Standards governing this area are AS/NZS 2210.1.2010 and AS/NZS 2210.3.2009

• Safety glasses- the Australian Standards governing this area are AS/NZS 1337 and AS/NZS 1337.1:2010 Personal Eye Protection. Any safety eye wear should have the AS1337 stamp marked on the item.

• Scientific Calculator , non-programmable • Instrument box • Writing and drawings implements.

• Computer / iPad

Dress Code: • Neatly dressed • Footwear – Enclosed footwear must be worn by students on Campus. Open sandals,

thongs etc. are not permitted and it is preferable that the footwear be sturdy.

If students attend short courses incorrectly attired they will not be permitted to continue the course.

Credit: Students who hold a current AMSA Certificate of Safety Training (COST) or have completed any of the STCW short courses please contact the Australian Maritime College Maritime Training Administration Office as this may affect your start date.

Medical Requirements:

If you have an existing medical condition or health problem and are concerned that this may cause problems with a career at sea, you are strongly advised to undergo the relevant State/Territory or National medical examination PRIOR to giving up employment and travelling to Tasmania to commence studies. In addition, students are strongly advised to have their vision and colour blindness tested by their local GP before commencing this course.

In addition, you should ensure you meet the regulator’s medical standard for employment on board vessels. A list of approved Medical Inspectors is available on the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) website or that of the relevant State authority, www.amsa.gov.au

AMSA Sea Service: If you intend to undertake an AMSA oral examination for a seagoing Certificate of Competency on completion, you will be required to undertake a sea-time assessment with AMSA prior to the oral examination, as per AMSA Marine Order 72. This would usually require you to have employment, a traineeship or cadetship with a shipping company.

In addition, AMSA requires sea service as a prerequisite to obtaining a Certificate of Competency as an Engineer Officer.
