OUR FOCUS PARISH THIS WEEK IS ST. GEORGE'S, GATE PA, TAURANGA

The church sits on the historic battle site of Pukehinahina/Gate Pâ, which was fought on 29 April 1864. This part of our story calls us to a mission of reconciliation. We try to be welcoming of everyone who walks through our door – above our door the words are written “All who enter here be reconciled”. We believe in the principles of justice, social equality and human rights, and we seek to be present to and with our community.

The first Anglican Church in Gate Pâ was built in 1900, and was a daughter church of Holy Trinity Tauranga for many years. We became an independent parish when our first vicar, Reverend C.D.R. Stevens, was inducted in 1962.

In 1992 the church experienced a signifi-cant fire, which resulted in our current building being erected in 1993.

Today we are a parish made up of mainly Pâkehâ New Zealanders with some Mâori whânau and other ethnicities. We are jour-neying together to explore what it means to be a Tikanga Pâkehâ parish on a sacred Mâori site. Vicar: the Rev’d John Hebenton

TODAY …

A very warm WELCOME to all who are worshipping with us -- especially if you are visiting Napier or at the Cathedral for the first time.

PILGRIMAGE TIME

Today, after the 10am Eucharist, those who have booked their seats on the bus will share lunch then set off on pilgrimage to Pukehou and Omarunui in the foot-steps of Samuel Williams.

THANKSGIVING SUNDAY

Today is our annual occasion to renew or begin a financial pledge to support the Cathedral’s ministry. A brochure to help you do that has been mailed to everyone on the Parish Roll. If you haven’t re-ceived that brochure, and would like to contribute, please ask one of the sides-people at the main door. Only a third of those on the Parish Roll currently give regularly. If we could double that number then the Cathedral could afford more than a single full time clergy stipend, and offer a lot of other ministry initiatives. The completed pledge tear-off section from the brochure should be placed in an envelope marked “Parish Recorder” and may be placed in the offertory bag today or next Sunday or delivered to the Parish Office. An indication of your financial commitment assists the Vestry plan a budget for the coming year. Thank you.

THE CHANCEL RAMP

A couple of weeks ago we launched a campaign to raise $5000 to go towards the cost of building a ramp up to the chancel in order to allow wheelchairs and anyone who finds the steps a challenge. We are very grateful to some very gener-ous people who have enabled us to reach our target so quickly. Plans have been drawn by the Draughtsman and submitted to the Napier City Council for building consent!

HIDDEN TREASURES

In the clean out of old cupboards around the cathedral, we’ve discovered an histor-ic altar frontal, probably orginating from the museum room and before that from an early Napier church, possibly St Au-gustine’s. If you would like this utterly unique piece of eccelesiastical local histo-ry to grace your home, come and make a bid next week during the AGM at 11.30am. It would be nice to see it go to a good cathedral parishioner’s home.

CATHEDRAL TOURS

A free guided tour of the Cathedral is available on request but always offered every Wednesday at 2.00pm. Come and discover some of the “inside stories”!

The flowers in the Cathedral today are in loving memory of

REQUEST FOR ACCOMMODATION

My name is Evelyn Gawen, I am 26 years old from England. I have been volunteer-ing on a farm in exchange for accommo-dation for 3 weeks. I have just been of-fered a job in Hohepa in Poraiti, and I am waiting for a room there, but they say that it may take some time for a room to be-come available. So, I am wondering if anyone has a spare room I could stay in or rent on a temporary basis? I would be working in the mornings and will be gen-erally be finishing work around 9pm so will be home by 9.30pm. I am looking to see if anyone near Poraiti (eg Green-meadows or Taradale vicinity) would be able to help. I do not have a car or bike at the moment to transport myself around but I feel very positive about the job so if anyone can help or give me any sugges-tions would be very much appreciated.

My mobile number is 0221768387 or my email is: [email protected]

I am a very helpful and tidy person and would really appreciate any help.

God bless you all.
