Conditions of Sale & A Guide to BuyersThe highest bidder shall be the buyer. In the event of any dispute as to the bidding in respect of any lot, that lot may be offered again at the discretion of the auctioneer whose decision shall be absolute and final.

The auctioneer has the right -(i) to refuse any bid;(ii) to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion;(iii) to place a reserve on any lot;(iv) to place a bid or bids on behalf of the seller;(v) to withdraw any lot from sale;(vi) to require a successful bidder to pay forthwith the whole or any part of the purchase price. The auctioneer acts as the agent of the seller and neither he nor the seller shall be responsible for any defects or faults in any lot or for any errors of description or for genuineness or authenticity of any lot and no compensation shall be paid in respect of same.

From the time of lot being sold, such lot will be the responsibility of the buyer. Successful bidders are required to pay for purchases immediately on completion of sale unless otherwise arranged.

All intending buyers are required to register for a bidding number prior to auction commencing. Subscribers can use their permanent bidding number. We reserve the right to ask for identification if you are a first time client of International Art Centre.

Each lot shall be paid for and removed at the buyers expense by no later than 4pm Thursday 25 February 2016 unless otherwise arranged failing which the auctioneer and/or the seller shall have the right to forfeit any deposit paid by the buyer and to resell the lot either by public or private sale and any deficiency on costs of resale shall be borne by the defaulting buyer.

No lot may be collected or paid for whilst auction is in progress.

SUBJECT BIDSWhen the auctioneer declares a lot ‘subject’ this means the bid is below the set reserve and is subject to vendor accepting, rejecting or negotiating the bid. International Art Centre will endeavour to make contact with the vendor immediately after sale or the following day. If the bid is accepted, the highest bidder is obligated to make purchase.

2015 at a glance

International Art Centre continued to set record prices throughout 2015. Three major sales in the Important, Early & Rare category saw quality works of art, many on the market for the first time, met with appreciation by responsive buyers.

The March auction saw two works by C F Goldie sold and record auction prices paid for the works of D K Richmond, W A Bowing and Piera McArthur. A small work by Horace Moore-Jones fetched a record $257,950 only to be exceeded in the July auction when a larger version of Simpson and his Donkey fetched $492,450. The same sale saw Frances Hodgkins’ Monastery Steps achieve $375,200 and Lois White’s Weeping Women set a new auction record of $79,000. Works by the late Sir Peter Siddell continue to trend well with sales of over $170,000 in this auction alone. July’s Important, Early & Rare, achieved a post-auction sale rate of 90% with post-auction sales totaling over $2 million, the highest grossing art auction result in two years. November’s Important & Rare catalogue saw a collection of ten works by Peter McIntyre achieve $308,000 along with Don Binney’s Kairara Kaka fetching $140,000.

May was a busy month at International Art Centre with two successful sales of contemporary art. Contemporary & Modern Art and the Barry Pilcher Collection of New Zealand art and sculpture. This single owner sale created a great deal of interest, with a sale rate of over 80%. Several records were achieved, most notably Heather Straka’s St Sebastian which made $21,690.

Our Collectable Art sale category saw sales in February and August. This sales category continues to attract first time buyers, those on limited budgets or astute collectors wanting a bargain. Our final sale of 2015 was December’s Contemporary & Modern auction with sales in excess of $480,000.

2016, our 46th year in business, is sure to bring another year of excitement to the market. See you here!

THE HANAN COLLECTION LOTS 134 - 148 A friendship conducted through correspondence existed between Dunedin lawyer, Mark Hanan and the Anglo-Welsh artist Sir Frank Brangwyn RA. Brangwyn represented Britain at the Venice Biennale and was the first artist to be given a retrospective exhibition at the Royal Academy during his lifetime. Along with Diego Rivera and Josep Maria Sert, he was chosen by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. to decorate the concourse of the RCA Building in New York City with murals. A sequence of large murals on canvas (originally from Horton House, Northamptonshire) is held by the Dunedin Public Art Gallery and Te Papa Tongarewa.

Well aware of the austerity imposed by rationing in post war England, Hanan would regularly send parcels of New Zealand products such as woollen clothing and cheeses to his artist friend. In turn, Brangwyn sent Hanan paintings by both himself and other artists whom he admired and collected. This exchange continued until the artist’s death in 1956. The largest collection of Sir Frank Brangwyn paintings in New Zealand is permanently held by the Hanan family. In 2012 the collection was loaned to the Dunedin Art Gallery for a grand retrospective exhibition. A small selection of works from the collection are now offered for sale.

In 2006, Hanan’s daughter Susie attended the exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of Brangwyn’s death which toured the UK.

J E (Jock) Fraser 1899 - 1980 was born in Dunedin. As a young man he trained as a primary school teacher, and later studied drawing and watercolour painting at Heatherleys Art School in London. With the outbreak of WWII Jock Fraser served in the Intelligence Section of the 26th New Zealand Infantry Brigade, both in Greece and the Western Desert. In 1941 he was captured at Sidi Rezegh, and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner at Campo 52 in Genoa. There he passed the boredom of camp life by drawing on scraps of writing paper. When the prisoners were marched on to another camp near Udine, he left the drawings with an Italian family who sent them via advancing

American forces to New Zealand. In 1943 he and other prisoners were transferred to Stalag Vlll A, near Dresden, where they worked in factories, mines, quarries and railroad construction. With the advance of the Russians from the east in 1945, 3000 prisoners of war were evacuated on foot, marching 643 kilometres across Europe at a rate of 19 kilometres per day. They were eventually liberated by the American forces but many died on the way from starvation, thirst and exhaustion. Jock Fraser was 46 when he made this rigorous journey. Prisoner of war life was harsh and often dangerous. Prisoners were faced with air raids, extreme climatic conditions, hard work, sickness

and hunger. The boredom and monotony of camp life could also be unendurable and prisoners went to great lengths to devise entertainments.

Jock Frasers drawing provided a remarkable record of camp life,  focusing on the every day routine of the prisoners existence: roll call, meal time, entertainments.  He returned to New Zealand when the war ended and resumed his teaching career.  From 1947 - 1954 he taught at Hampstead school in Ashburton, where he became headmaster. Later he made his home in Timaru, and became well known both as an artist and teacher.
