Step into Ennismore Sessions House, a grand Grade II* listed building that

spurs your best creative thinking. For us at Ennismore, it’s home, from which our

best ideas are born. For you, it’s an innovative meetings and events space to

amplify any occasion.

When the courthouse moved in 1931, the building became the headquarters of Avery Scales. In the 1970s, it was acquired as a Masonic Lodge before being sold in 2013. Over its 235-year history, there have only been four proprietors. Celebrated for its most glorious heritage, it became a Grade II* listed building in 1994 and in 2018, Ennismore moved in.

Built in 1779 and opened in 1782, it was originally a public courthouse. Once the largest and busiest in England, its magnificent dome, inspired by the Roman Pantheon, saw thousands of trials take place. Thieves, murderers and revolutionaries passed through its hallways – sentenced before the magistrate and sent down to the basement cells. It’s where Oliver Twist, framed for the acts of the Artful Dodger, was taken for pickpocketing in Dickens’s London.

On the west side of Clerkenwell Green stands Ennismore Sessions House, a grand

Palladian-style building with the most storied and sometimes dramatic history.

Trials, tribulations and tunnelsRumour has it, there are tunnels underneath Sessions House – some leading to Clerkenwell Prison and some

leading to canals that used to take prisoners to Australia!

A notorious meeting placeClerkenwell Green boasts a radical history.

Lenin and his wife lived just across the road from Sessions House in 1902.

Cheap as chipsWhen the building was put on the market after the war,

there was little interest. In 1923, it was sold for £26,500 – well below its valuation of £65,000.

Treason!Its greatest claim to fame as a courthouse was

the 1660 trial of 29 ‘regicides’ – who’d condemned Charles I to death. Most were found guilty,

hung, drawn and quartered!

In Session with Artiq

Our spaces will continually evolve to tell new stories. We’ve partnered with art consultancy Artiq to curate exhibitions spotlighting local heavyweights and young and emerging artists. Our artists in residency will see The Lobby and Gallery as a home for artwork, rotating every six months.

We kickstart this partnership with London-based painter Olha Pryymak, inspired by trips to rural Latvia, herbalism and art’s ability to inspire healing and change.
