Everyone is Welcome

C anon O’Gloom rubbed the sleep

out of his Sunday morn-ing eyes as he managed to open the church just before the first parish-ioners turned up for the

9 o’clock Mass. The beer cans, chip papers and confetti in the porch reminded him that he really must get round to organising some sort of cleaning rota now that no one was left from the old one.

At seven minutes past nine he beckoned to El-eanor White who put on a backing CD of the En-trance Song, “I rejoiced when I heard them say let us go to God’s house”. A few faithful bothered to join in but most just listened to the synthesised sound of the keyboard and the croaking of the music group led by Sid Mont-

gomery.

During the first reading the altar boy was sent off to go and get a taper to light the candles with. This came as a pleasant distraction from Cynthia Purejoy’s mumbling from the Book of Lamenta-tions. Thank God the microphone wasn’t working.

Another blessing came when Canon O’Gloom announced he wasn’t going to preach today because he knew every-one wanted to be off and away early so they could enjoy the beautiful weather.

Clyde Schnell took the collection with his usual aplomb. There was no procession of the gifts since Sunday commun-ion always came from the tabernacle, and soon we were into the Eucha-ristic Prayer. Clyde con-tinued passing the bas-ket, oblivious that some-thing greater than his own performance was taking place in the sanc-tuary area.

Josh Wilkins tried to take part in the proceed-ings but was sucked into

crawling under the pews to retrieve the felt-tip pens that his little sister Emily dropped while fill-ing in a colouring book of scenes from the Book of Exodus. As the congregation came forward for com-munion (under one kind only) they were treated to a rendition of the “Ride of the Valkyries” from Maria Gonzalez’s

mobile phone. A second collection to support re-tired nuns meant that Clyde stepped up to the plate once more before the congregation peeled out to “O, Lord, my God!”

It was then that Canon O’Gloom was struck by a phrase from today’s gospel:

“This people honours me only with lip-service, while their hearts are far from me.”

WORTHLESS WORSHIP FAITH IN FOCUS:

Advance Notice (Change to Sunday Mass time)

It is expected that during Advent Bishop Peter will be making his an-nouncement regarding changes in Mass times in parishes throughout the diocese as one of the ways to deal with the shortage of priests. This will enable the priests in dean-ery to help out each other in emer-gencies and whenever they need ‘cover’ during their holidays.

In the meantime, since such a situa-tion has already arisen for Buckley and Mold, Bishop has suggested to implement the changes in these par-ishes so that Fr.Francis Doyle and myself can help out each other dur-ing our holidays.

Accordingly, please make a note of the Mass time changes for the fol-lowing Sundays.

20th September Sunday: Mold: 11am

Buckley : 9am and 5pm 27th September Sunday

Mold: 11am Buckley: 9am and 5pm

And this will be the Timing of the Masses for all the Sundays in November in Buckley and Mold.

Organ Recital

Richard Chivers from St Mary’s Cathedral, Wrexham, will be giving an organ recital in St Asaph Cathe-dral on Wednesday 2

nd September

at 7.30pm. Tickets available on the

door at £5. All welcome.

More trivia for you to take a look at! And decide, True or False?

Waxing Eloquent

Our churches today contain some wonderful pieces of art that have been created for the glory of God. Stat-ues and paintings can raise the mind and heart to God. But sometimes they can also make us question our faith! Some are so bad that they would be better placed in a house of horrors. In Roman times rich people used to donate statues to be placed in the various temples around their cities. It was a sign of wealth and an eloquent plea to the gods for protec-tion. Sometimes, while sculpting the marble statues, the artist would chip off too much. If it was on the face of a person then the mistake was too bad to be recti-fied. But if it occurred somewhere on the statue that people would not look at too closely, a remedy was possible: they filled in the pockmark with hot wax and then smoothed it over to look just like the marble. The Latin word for “wax” is “cera” and the word for “without” is “sine”. So when a sculptor completed a work of art that did not contain any wax, both he and the statue were said to be “sincere”. True or false?

Heads in the Clouds

Sometimes we love to give spiritual significance to things that are nothing more than practical. At the Eucharist the priest or deacon takes a chalice of wine and pours a drop of water inside to mix with the wine. Over the centuries we have spiritualised this action and we speak of our tiny drop of humanity being min-gled with the divinity of Christ. While there is nothing wrong with this in principle, it misses the original point. In the Middle East of the first and second centu-ry wine was exceedingly strong, and usually quite rough. In order to make it palatable people mixed water with it. So this custom of putting just a drop in the chalice is actually a pious practice that comes from the need to adulterate the wine.
